  • In this video, Navy SEAL Mark "Coch" Cochiolo, talks about plate carriers. He talks about different setups, what he recommends, and how he sets everything up on his own plate carriers.
Coch has over 30 years of Naval Special Warfare experience ranging from Special Warfare Operator, Operational Tester, Combat developer, Officer In Charge, Training Officer and Weapons Instructor.
Coch has four operational SEAL tours of duty to the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) under his belt and has spent eight years as an assaulter and breacher on the US Navy's tier-one counter-terrorist unit (Naval Special Warfare Development Group) making operational and combat deployments to hotspots in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
In Coch's most senior military position he was the Chief Warrant Officer in charge of training and combat systems for forward deployed SEALs in the Middle East out of NSWU3, Bahrain.
After retiring, he served as Contract BUD/S instructor responsible for curriculum development and teaching the basics weapons course for all US Navy SEAL candidates. He has trained over 3,500 Navy SEAL candidates in Combat Shooting and marksmanship with the M4 Rifle, Sig 226, Glock 19, MK 48, MK 17 SCAR and 40mm grenade launchers.

One guy at Lewis McCord gave me great advice. Save money by getting a cheap Condor or used carrier, take it to the Korean seamstresses at one of the off post cleaners, have her do a double stitch job on the areas that could potentially rip/come apart and voila' you have something almost as strong as a Tactical Tailor/Redback/Ferro rig that can be run hard at a class or on deployment.

    • @ano1962

Tactical tailor chest rigs aren’t very expensive I got mine in 04 before my 1st tour and it lasted 3 1/2 years in Iraq and a few NTC/JRTC rotation, but getting any gear re-enforced but Koreans off post is a good idea

I think the one thing that came along and has continued the development of plate carriers has been ceramic material plates, steel is robust and long lasting but it’s heavy, uncomfortable and a bit dangerous for comfort, lightweight and fitment a curved ceramic plate does wonders, I upgraded my front plate to a ceramic plate and I won’t ever go back sure it’s more expensive but I’d argue that it’s worth it just because it’ll save your back and knees

I remember wearing early version of the IOTV with the pull chord. wore pouches enough to hold 7 full mags, a seat belt cutter, pouch for NVG's, admin pouch, Camelback attached to the back of the IOTV and Antropene/2 pam chloride on side in the event we got slimed. with everything worn came close to 120lbs of gear. not counting breaching kits, rifle and sidearm.
