In an TV Guide interview for Star Trek's 25th anniversary,Patrick Stewart admitted that he wasn't sure what Whoopi would do after TNG ended, not because she didn't have any career prospects but because she was so talented and multifaceted that her horizons were limitless.
Star Trek was the reason why Whoopi wanted to be a actress. It was her first time seeing a black woman in space before that she thought black people didn’t live in space. This means so much to her
Gene Roddenberry always had a fondness for Black women. Like Whoopi said Guinan was the last character he created. If you look at the other shows there were no strong leading Black female characters. With the exception of Discovery.
What makes it even awesome was that Whoopi's character Guinan was only supposed to have been in for one season and that was it as the bartender/manager of Ten Forward. However because she became such good friends with the likes of Frakes, Spiner and Stewart to name a few; they insisted she stay on for the future seasons and that's what she did, even having a cameo in the Enterprise B scene in Generations.

If Whoopi Goldberg is actually returning to Star Trek during Star Trek: Picard, I fully expect to finally get the answer as to what Q did that made her so angry with him! Just my two cents.
We know that the El-Aurian homeworld was destroyed by the Borg. I have always wondered if Q had something to do with that (in a similar way to how he transported the Enterprise to Borg space to teach Picard a lesson).
I wouldn't want them to answer too much. She was always aloof and mysterious, and that was part of what worked so well. Picard didn't turn to her to find out the who, what, where, when, why answers, he went to her for wisdom.
More than likely Q did to Guineans people what Q did to us. Introduced us to the borg. But from what we’ve seen in the franchise they were not able to fend them off.
We have to remember, the Borg are native to the Delta Quadrant. Is Guinan’s race from that far away? And if they are, why did Voyager not encounter them? Or did the survivors make it out to the Alpha Quadrant somehow?
@@visceratrocar well the mistery is part of the attraction, her species being not explored and the Q even to some level fearing them. Besides that she's just very well written dialogue wise, and very well acted. When she talked to tasha, wesley, worf, picard, every character, she always gives sound sage advice. When you can enjoy a dialogue that is mostly quiet, without threats or even arguments. Combine all that with rare cameos you just get a very well liked character. Just watch back and jog your memory.

I can't pretend to be a fan of The View, but that doesn't stop me from stating this is one of my favorite clips from anywhere. Whoopi's joy is worth watching over and over.
Guinan was the "sounding board" trope, but Whoopi put so much more into it than that. Her best acting of her career if you ask me. Much of it nonverbal.

Star Trek: The Next Generation was way ahead of it's time in talking about very same issues that we face as society today. It also brought plenty of diversity into it's casting choices which was made it stand out during the time. Will always appreciate this fact and that's why TNG remains such a good show despite its age.
@@jameslucas3161 The original series had some diversity as well, but how does that negate TNG's diversity? Granted, there was no asian character on TNG to match Sulu, but there were two black characters (and I'm not even counting Guinan as a recurring guest) compared to the original series one. TNG also initially had three female main characters (dropped to two after the first season) to the original series one (and I don't equate white women with people of color, but in terms of general diversity, it's something). Neither had a latino main character, unfortunately. Thinking about it, I suppose that Voyager had the most racially diverse cast, although it wasn't as good of a show as TNG (though it should be said that TNG is my favorite TV show of all time). And on the issues, Rick is absolutely right. One of the things I love about TNG is how unapologetically scientific and rational it is in the early seasons (later on they did kowtow a little to spiritualism, though not completely, unlike DS9 which literally ends with black jesus versus cardassian antichrist). The original Trek series actually snuck in some Christian propaganda (that sun worship episode, which Kirk later understands to mean "son" as in son of god), which didn't really make sense. But anyhow, a lot of other social, political, and just frankly human issues are there, just as many were in the original series. Certainly TNG episodes like "The Measure of a Man" still speak to racial issues, "The High Ground" speaks to issues with terrorism, and "The Outcast" puts the shoe on the other foot in terms of gay rights.
TNG was not new in that respect. Star Trek ALWAYS dealt with issues far ahead of its time. The original series broke ground again and again on social issues. TNG was just following in its footsteps. Don't try to teach your grandma to suck eggs, youngster.
The issue is that Rick was talking as if TNG was the first show to do that. It was not, and it would be nice if TNG fans would own up to the fact that their favorite show was NOT the groundbreaker in this regard.
OH MY GOD I just realised I really hope Seven doesn't die because it would be a dream come true to see Seven and Guinan meet eachother and interact. They're two of my absolute favourites!

Plus , I’m not understanding, they ruined Star Trek with lefty narratives? I must be not understanding you! Star Trek is about all planets uniting( Picard), is excluded from this. The planets that were in the federation had different politics , races, religions, sexes, so I don’t get the leftish agenda. Star Trek was leftish, but perhaps I’m just not understanding, because how could U watch a series & not understand the basic premise ; according to me & I could be wrong

That was indeed the whole point of the show - and a reason all the series have such staying power. I think deep down the vast majority want to believe people as a whole can be a lot better than what we are or have been.
@@davidkruse4030 Wow... It's like you never watched Star Trek at all. Star Trek has always worn its politics on its sleeves. Always. Yes, it often used sci-fi analogies, but the messages were never subtext.
@@JanetStarChild While it has always been progressive, it was never 'woke' in the ways of today. They were always subtle. There are many examples, but i'll use the TNG episode 'first contact': where a character from a genderless species starts to think she is female and wants a relationship with a crew member. Now in the context, is that about homosexuality or is it about transexuals? The end the character gets converted to the norm for her race and says she's happy about it, we don't actually know if that is a good thing or not, we might have thought she didn't need 'fixing' but then maybe for their people she genuinely did. It's a situation that is left open and up for debate. Today's sci-fi would have had a clear message about what it was about, they wouldn't have been 'converted' at the end or if they were, it would have been reversed after it turned out the race were evil in someway. The moral would have been beaten over our heads. Trek was show don't tell, it was philosophical. New trek tells everything in case the audience don't get it, and never leaves room for depth of thought or discussion. The politics are the same, the execution was different. Progressive shows egalitarianism and treats everyone as normal without making a fuss about it, 'woke' belittles one type of person to elevate another and makes the differences and 'progressive' ideas more important than telling a good story with good characters. The latter often results in the opposite reaction, which is the real reason why woke is so bad as it does not achieve what it claims it wants to. People don't like being told what to think or preached to, even if they are part of the choir.
I legitimately teared up at this! I love both of them and I love that Trek hasn't forgotten Whoopi and what it means to her. 😊 Also, I don't watch this show, but the woman sitting opposite Whoopi clearly has no idea what Trek means to her. She was talking about "millions of fans", or some such nonsense.

It's nice to see that after all these years she is able to be so humble and grateful.

I could see that through the on screen chemistry between Patrick Stewart and Woopie
And you know the new season will at least be fun with Guinan AND Q!
I never understood it. Nothing against either character. She was only in a few episodes and it just wasn't explained well.
@@visceratrocar It’s because she always seemed to give the best advice exactly when people needed to hear it.

Star Trek: The Next Generation was way ahead of it's time in talking about very same issues that we face as society today. It also brought plenty of diversity into it's casting choices which was made it stand out during the time. Will always appreciate this fact and that's why TNG remains such a good show despite its age.
Um, I think you mean The Original Series...

@@davidkruse4030
Wow...
Seeing Whoopi so happy is infectious, I'm so glad this happened.
"Can you play Picard 18 years later?"
"Yeah, it's super easy, barely an inconvenience."
It's playing Patrick that's the problem
