      @@istvanpraha No offense, but that's definitely not what would have tipped her off that it was a fake. Originals are retouched all the time so that they don't fade away. I presume she looked at it longer than is shown and noticed inaccuracies. This could mean differences in how it is painted (when compared to the original), specific knowledge about the original painter's technique, or even what it is painted with. Considering her comment, I'm inclined to think it is likely a mixture of visible differences from the original and whatever it is painted with.

    I love the language she uses. Very pro. Instead of saying "this is just a bunch of random junk with no cohesiveness to the pieces at all" she says "this reads to me more as an accumulation" and instead of just straight up telling him "it's a clear forgery" she says "it's a reproduction, and not a very good one"

    • @DarthFurie
      @DarthFurie 3 года назад +152

      A reproduction isn't the same thing as a forgery, though. Reproductions are very common, and there's nothing wrong with them. A forgery is trying to pass off a copy as an original. It's unclear from this clip whether the hotel owner was lied to about the paintings, or just stupid and didn't understand what a reproduction is

There are however exceptions, if the artist who did the reproduction(not the original artist) did an exceptionally good job, or if the artist is well known for other art, then the reproduction might have value based off that alone.

    The painting in question is called, "Triumph of Manius Curius Dentatus" painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo in a commission from 1726 for a number of Roman History paintings. The original is housed in The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, along with 4 others from the series. The original is 18' x 10.5' and does appear to have some of its color muted by its varnish, though the reds and whites still appear to be intense. All 10 paintings in the series were reunited in 1997 for an exhibition in New York.
    There are several copies of this floating around - painted in the style of Tiepolo. One that was in good condition was sold in 2005 for about $1600. I imagine this owner thought he was sitting on a piece that was worth at least $7K.

      I think everyone would get pangs of doubt once an appraiser shows up, because they could just rock your shit no matter how sure you are, one can always be wrong

      @New Keys You are a simple person who has no idea how auctions work. The auction house gets a percentage of the sale, therefore it is in their benefit for the items to sell for as much as is possible.

    • @MVSTNGGT
      @MVSTNGGT 5 лет назад +89

      New Keys ....J A is right....Auctioneers want stuff to sell for as much as possible so they make the most profit. How do you think auctioneers make money?? Their salary is based off the percentage they get from every sale, therefore if the items sell for more, they get more money. You really think the auctioneers would fuck themselves over like that? That would make no sense.

    1) When she says that there are condition issues and its more like stuff instead of a collection you can see Robert thinking "Ok so not 300K but I bet 250K"
    2) When she says its worth 25,000 Gordon's reaction is amazing because you know he to was thinking "Oh at least 100,000 to 200,000" and the fact that it wasn't just kills him.
