These flags are an example of good ideas with bad excutions. They have symbolisms and elements that lead to good flags but they're just drawn so weirdly that they come off as bad in design.

I think the Liberian county flags are considered as bad as they are because of how bad they are drawn, not because of the symbolism. If they would have drawn them better, I think much less people would complain about them.

Exactly, great idea, terrible execution. I love some of the concepts (such as using a picture as a stripe or the orange&purple) but... they look like they were drawn by me. If someone redrew them properly and removed the Liberian flag from the corners, I would love most of them.

1) lets talk about those ponies in the bottom right.
2) I think 99.999% of people that have problems with the Flags have a problem with the Graphics. Like the US state flags may only have seal on them, but it still gives a flag-y authenticity and pressure, while looking at a badly drawn flag, no matter the symbolism or intent, is in all honesty not that "wow that is important!" feel
I mean, if it weren't for Liberias flag in the top left corner, I would have thought this was just more of that shitty MSPaint art people draw as kids... It just as most ppl have stated, good idea bad execution.
I think they have some great concepts, but the execution is somewhat lacking. There’s potential but they just have to be drawn better to look better. Too much things just look of like the drawings and some proportions.
I can see what you mean. I have mixed feelings for Gbarpolu and River Gee's flags for this reason.
Vexillographer My versions of these flag at least 2 of them. 1. River "G" County: I made the flag of the sun making it rising and have the sky pink purple light blue and blue also what i did is the rive i made it connecting to a ocean and not floeing to a tree and added to flags. 2. Lofa County: The arm is connecting to a body
The simpler ones are better. Whenever it's just a cross pattern or a mountain against a plain background it looks nice. But the ones with the trees, lighthouse, arm, etc just look silly. They're drawn badly, and the drawings are so small that from a distance it's hard to tell what they're meant to depict. Generally in my opinion drawings on flags only work if its a drawing of one single object and it's very large and central, or if it's a very simple, flattened solid colour drawing. Otherwise it's easy to mess up and its hard to make out. I admire you for speaking your mind though, but yeah I don't see much appeal in most of the Liberia county flags, sorry. Only the few designs that kept it very simple are good in my view.

Thanks for commenting; these are very good points. If I were re-drawing Maryland, River Gee, or Lofa, I'd probably make those pictures look better.

Yeah, I do see your point too, there's definitely some good ideas behind the flags, with a bit of a redo of how they executed the ideas they could be really good.
I think probably my favourite sets of local flags in the world are the Japanese prefecture flags and the Australian state flags (but being an Aussie I'm a bit biased). They have consistent similar themes but they're also each unique and the designs are clean and easily visible. I feel like Liberia's county flags definitely could achieve that kind of thing with a bit of work. But as they are now they're just not that appealing to look at, especially from a distance.
And that's awesome, Fluttershy is one of my favourites as well! Probably equal with Twilight, Trixie and Scootaloo (I'm not very good at narrowing it down xD)
But yeah I admire Fluttershy's respect for animals and her courage to face challenges for the sake of her friends, even when they're terrifying. She's someone I'd want to be best friends with!

The standard for flags of Liberia's counties is that the Liberian flag is placed in the upper left of the flag.
Liberia's county flags are interesting but pretty silly.

Works in progress. The fact that you were able to point out those things means they're on the right track, the fact that others are laughing at them means they aren't there yet.
San Francisco's flag has that same "so close/so far" dichotomy. A phoenix rising from the ashes is just plain awesome with the history to back it up. But then, it has the crude art and the text. These are only a half-step closer to being good.
One of my family members is a diplomat in Liberia and I saw every single one of them flying. Amazing and charming place :).
I disagree that the Liberian flag in the corner of all of them is unique. The British Empire did the same thing with all their colonies back in the day, just replacing the Liberian flag with the Union Jack. Those flags even still exist in some of Canada’s provinces as well as Australia and New Zealand.
but these liberian flags are different in that the flag doesn't take up the entire canton like the union jack does. it's merely a little addition. in _that_ way, it is pretty uncommon (if not completely unique)

Thanks for the insight. We love our flags and use them fondly. We see it as some level of Eurocentrism for persons to expect all flags to carry the same elements of design and style that Europeans have, including crowns and stuff. We all have our artistic styles and the styles were the ones used to draw the flags. We do have so many trees on the flag as our country is largely forest. Our counties flags were designed before the Commonwealth flags like Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, so they are imitating our county flags.
Our problem isn't the elements used, it's... More that, as many have said, they look cheap which is unfortunate for a country. The elements used are wonderful! But its like making a bridge out of strong material, and only getting enough to get like a plank across the river. Functional, and I'm sure the plank will hold its a good material just... Perhaps more could have been done
Ok they're not all bad but the River Gee County flag sucks. Needs a redesign and quick.

This video opens my eyes on vaxillology bandwagons... People who jump in the bandwagon on hating Liberia's county flags are like movie critics who jump in the bandwagon on hating the same movies scenes as each other. For example, Home Alone 2 has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 27% even though 61% of audiences liked it.

Props to your open-minded analysis. Aside from (many of them) appearing to have been crafted by very young children, they weren't too outrageously bad.
Besides what many said about poor execution, I think the Grand Cape Mount County flag meets (almost) any standard for a good flag. Other likeable aspect of Liberia's county flags is obvious but nice: all them have the country flag on the upper left corner. It speaks a lot about unity without words or obscure symbolism. I like that.
Nice job there :) Have you seen the flags of Puerto Rico's municipalities (cities). People take a lot of pride in them (putting them in car stickers, shirts, homes) and I'd say that most of them are pretty well designed.
WIlliam Bell totally agree. Starting with San Juan's flag. You barely see it flying because of it.
I would rather have them without the miniature liberian flag.
Most of those flags would be pretty good given a nice rendition, and they are simple and unique. I especially like Grand Geduh, since it's basically blue, white and green stripes, but instead of being all geometrically, one stripe happens to be mountain shaped. There even is a sun behind the mountain where it would touch the blue, so if it's drawn right it would even be correct in terms of heraldry (you know, metal and paint stuff)
Bong has a bit weird colors, as does Bomi (I don't like pink and purple in flags, orange is stretching it enough) but design wise I'd take them (For Bomi, I'd go with a more geometric approach for the inside of the sphear, with five identical spears/trees/whatever)
Even River Gee could be saved. It's upper 1/3 blue and lower 2/3 green with an organic division, with the top third containing two trees in natural colors and a rising sun; and the lower part containing another tree in natural colors, with a blue stream growing from it's roots to the lower right corner. Even on official documents, there are hand-drawn versions of it, so I'd assume that there is nothing like an official svg file, but rather a written description on what the flag officially is. Why not, instead of laughing about it, someone draws a nicer rendition of the flag to see what it could be?

If you want any flag to hate on, hate on Tampa, Florida's flag. It hurts to look at and is in no way charming, unlike Maryland state's flag or the Liberia county flags.

they would look much better without the Liberian national flag. they are still ugly flags. I'm not here to make fun of Liberia but I am just telling them to make good flags because these flags don't even look like flags to me

As a Liberian-American, I love the design of these flags because Liberia as a nation has a history that is different from many countries. The flags were designed by the locals themselves to represent their landscape and cultural colors. They were not designed by some experts from the West. When most of these flags were designed in the early 19th Century, Microsoft or clips arts did not exist. And lastly, these county flags were not designed to please our brothers and sisters in the West. And they were not designed for you to tell Liberians where they are good or bad.

I guess our favorites our the same. I love the fact that the flag has PURPLE, PURPLE in it. AND A LOT. i don’t even know many state flags that use purple. And almost no countries do it either. So I like it. Especially since they are “mountains” makes it even better.

Thanks Vexillographer. Personally I think these are all beautiful flags... cant possibly choose a favourite or least favourite... they appear related to the old Asafo flags of W. Africa as much as traditional colonial patterns - hence i suppose their novelty.. Those Asafo flags make these look a bit tame!
They should remove the Liberian national flag and re-design them to make them look good. But I agree with you. Some county flags like Sanoe has a good Flag. Nimba county also has a good flag without the Liberian flag But Grand Basa County has a bad flag

love this kind of video! would you might consider to cover on Malaysia's state flags? Malaysia is a federation consists of 13 states and 3 federal territories and each of these entities have their own flags too. The federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya have 1 unified flag (introduced in 2004) but previously they used to have separate flags.
I love Malaysia's state flags, especially Sarawak. There's a decent chance I'll make a video on them sometime. :)

These are not just the best designed flags, but the best designs of any kind in the world.
I know this is old, but I met a guy from Liberia. He had no problem with these flags, and said they were well liked, which is what a good flag is supposed to do, so I guess they serve their purpose well. They also kind of have this super derpy charm that grows on you. I still think they can be improved and drawn better, but hey, at least they’re memorable and creative.
These look like they were done in excel, then a clone of the american flag was just copy and pasted on the left corner. No excuse.

I think the flags of Liberia are cool too. They are simple, they have meaningful symbolism, they are related because they have the Liberian flag in the canton, they have no lettering or seals, and they use barley any colors.

They're my favorite flags because they look that way. Unprofessional, drawn in Paint... It's what makes them so great. I mean, other flags are drawn well, have symbolism, look great... And are boring.

Well let's think about it, your right! None of them have seals like most of the other flags in the world with a flag in the corner. They definitely are unique and one of a kind flags. I've been redesigning and creating flags for some time and these are probably the most unique but meaningful flags I've seen so far. And I've been creating something where I redesign states/provinces/districts flags with their countries flag in the corner. These flags are definitely nailing the way of being interesting and just honestly being neat at the same time. I do agree that the drawing could do better but for now these flags are good in my opinion

These flags embody concepts that work in theory, but not in practice.
Alright I thought you were crazy going in to this but you made some good points. Maybe the Liberian county flags aren't that bad after all. Although I still think they could do without the mini Liberia flag in the corner and could use a few other little touch-ups.

Some of the concepts aren't bad, but the execution is what gives them the MS Paint look that gets so mocked.
You actually make very good points. I'd never considered those flags that way.
By the way, could you take a look at Argentine provincial flags? And comment what you think of them, or maybe even make a video on them? (that would be superb).
I love colors (orange, pink and purple are rare and surely original) and symbolisms behind some of them. I agree with people who says there's a lack of proportion and precision in graphics. My Top3 includes Bong, Grand Gedeh and Grand Cape Mount.
One issue I have with these flags is that they're just the miniature Liberian flag is sometimes just a little too small. It looks fine on some of them - like Bong County or Gbarpulo County, but looking at Grand Gedeh or Maryland, or Nimba's flags I just wish it could be a little larger.
Perhaps the top band (and bottom, preferably) could be a little skinnier?
I think this would look very nice on Nimba County's flag. Minimise the circle emblem a bit too and that would look very neat.
But Maryland and Grand Gedeh counties both have interesting and unusual tribands, the effect of which would be dampened by thinning out two of the bands. So instead they could make the Liberian flags a little larger. River Gee County already has a Liberian flag a little larger than the other counties, so enlargening it on two of the others would make that one appear as less of a sore thumb when among the others.
I'm also not too on board with the placements on Grand Cape Mount and Sinoe counties, but I'm less sure about how those might be improved.

I am proud of my country and the counties flags. The are unique. I love the attention drawn to these historical flags. They were made in the 18 century without the technological advancement we have now. Great creation... drawing don't matter but the stories they tell.

They just need better execution, nobody was ratting on the symbolism, look at some online redesigns, they almost always retain the symbolism, with improved colors, clarity, quality in general, and replacements for the canton.

Honestly, some of the county flags would probably look pretty good. IF, they got rid of the Liberian flag in the corner, and would redraw the flags so that they don't look like they were made on MS Paint.

I like most of those flags. I also don't like that it has the liberian flag in the corner of all of them (i don't like the liberian flag) maybe they could have just put the single liberian star in the corner (cuz i do appreciate the uniqueness of having them all be unified by it, even if i don't like the flag). also, i don't care if people say it's silly, but I really like the one with the arm across the river. The one with the diamond ... i hate the diamond, but it's also the one that doesn't look weird with the liberian flag in the corner. I like that tree, tho, that it looks like a person. I also like that it's just a solid background with three devices on it.

I've been thinking of vectorizing the accurate version of the River Gee flag and updating Wikimedia Commons' version with it.
My favorite Liberian county flag is Grand Kru. I love me some stripes, and paly designs are rare in flags.

I think all the concept and symbolism of the flag is nice and has potential. However, they should have used another artist. It's the execution that went wrong.
