In today's video we're exhaustively testing the myth that tapping on your soda can will decrease the amount of pressure built up in a shaken soda can. Should you tap it on the side? On the top? The bottom? Not at all? Today we're getting to the bottom of it.

Grind up Mentos and mix them with freeze dryed coke ... Than rehydrate it!
lmao
Neverremindyou freeze dried coke won’t have any fizz when rehydrated and won’t react to flat coke unless you use sparking water to rehydrate
Coke and mentos have the reaction because the sugary coating on mentos has a lot of pores, and those pores allow the bubbles to form on the surface and expand
it wont react, because the reason mentos fizzs when added to coke is because mentos have tiny nucleation sites that cause CO2 bubbles to get caught and create the fizz. without those sites youre just mixing powdered sugar.
grind up mentos in ice and put in cups
not saying that you did anything wrong, but just slightly cracking the top of the can before fully opening it to release the carbonation, and that works out very well.

Can a pressure washer take the seasoning off a cast iron pan and make it shiny again?
Barbara Carter that would be so satisfying
Are you asking that because you need to wash your pan and not sure if its worth the investment?
It’s better for the pan to keep the season on it
I'm asking because I'm curious. The oil practically turns into a polymer and from previous experience that doesn't come off easy. You practically have to use your oven's cleaning setting to start over, and even that's not great. Would pressure be better than heat? That's what I'd like to know :)

sargetester99 yesssss!
Right. Solubility.
@@Lainaux I think the biggest reason is that temperature almost always intensifies a chemical reaction of any kind.
@@thany3 the reason is that the solubility of any gas drops when temperature raises, so the gas escapes. There isn't a reaction in the can.
The best way to open soda isn't to tap it.

It's not about tapping amount of times, it's about knocking the bubbles off the sides of the can/container. Mythbusters already tested this and explained it. You need to gently tap around the sides to get the bubbles off the sides. All over the sides.
Edit: also thank you for reading comments and trying it out again.
Only thing I don't agree with is the aggressive opening style. Who does that? Seems like it's causing more destruction imo. I almost always break the seal slightly to release the pressure then a full crack open.

why didn't you just weigh the can prior to shaking, then weigh the liquid and cup to get more accurate results?
Because the can and cup dont weigh the same. Learn how to science!!!
No but if they just weighed the same can with remaining liquid it'd be completely accurate without the variable of leftover liquid remaining in the can. Pouring into a cup is unneeded for accuracy and could be poured into for the visual after the results.
@@rickyvandusen1744 pretty sure he meant re-weighing the same can after opening it. Learn how to english
You could subtract out the difference of the weight of the can and cup. That way it's purely just the liquid.
Ricky VanDusen you could just put the unopened can in a container then you just subtract the can weight from the total, there are always ways to minimize those kind of variables, so you need to learn how to science
"So it seems that one big shake has the greatest effect."

You should try this with bottles instead of cans to see if you would lose more or less liquid.
Barrett Smith huh, neat idea
Me: You did it wrong
Calli: i'm done
the REAL tap test isn't even a tap, you crack the can open SLIGHTLY, breaking the seal just enough to allow the pressure that has escaped solution to hiss out, then you open it the rest of the way. You can make a shaken can not explode if you (with utmost gentleness) break the seal.
Jesse C I thought I was the only one who thought this
Yeah but then the top can still get sticky from the slight bit oozing/bubbling out
@@hybridslinky4829 Gotta go slower then, you can crack the seal so very little that you need to apply pressure to the tab in order for the gas to escape. That's what's needed when it's shaken really badly.
Jesse C yup yup
That’s what I’ve done every time

Hi

I know, right? 😭
Time stamp?
Luca Ruzza 3:01 no doubt
Ive tested this a lot too, but all with Pepsi. All my tests have revealed the biggest factor in reducing the explosion is time. In only 13 seconds from the time the shaking stops the effects wear off. That's why the one shake blows the most, because very little time passes between the shake and the open. The only benefit of the taps is that time passes.
Here's an idea
Open it slowly to release the built up pressure....problem solved.

Lucas Kolesar you’d probably end up with soap on a stick lol. I worked at Pepsi for several years & have some input on this. 1st I wish you had tested Dr Pepper because it is the most carbonated. 2nd you should have weighed each can before shaking because it's very common to have different amounts in each can. Last I always tap my cans on top for 2 reasons, to clean off any dust/dirt that is on top & to remove any liquid near the opening so it doesn't spray when I open it.

the mentos effect happens because of the pours on the surface of menthos so Id assume that powder wouldnt do as much or pretty much none.

I think the tapping only works cause you wait, and it's a fun way to wait cause you spend the time doing something with tthe can. It's just a placebo
Agent M this is the answer! No doubt about it
Yep this is true. Basically the time you spent "tapping", You're letting the can rest.
Glad you did this video. Always been a random thought of mine

MythBusters tested this entire thing like 10 years ago, lol. It's a myth. Tapping the can after it's been shaked just creates more pressure.
A”random thought” dun dun ching
Glad you guys used the scale to check differences! I was wondering around half way through the video lol
You should have done it by weight of the can before and after opening, also when you open the can at an angle you're already going to pour out some of the liquid inside
A paint shaker mixes liquid, you need to actively shake it to displace the liquid
I had a feeling the shaker wasn't doing what this test needs
you should have tested to see if one big shake and then paint shaker was actually better than tapping
I used to open the can/bottle * and then * tap it to get excess bubbles out. The carbonation doesn't have anywhere to go until you've released the pressure.
Hey Nate and Callie! Can you try spraying the water pressure hose on some soda cans to see if it makes a hole or bubbles? Thanks!!!😁
They did that
Oh thanks For the info loguegamer
I always flick the sides very hard a few times. My reasoning is that the bubbles can stick very well to the sides and would presumably take a lot of energy to detach from the can. You can see and test this effect much easier with a clear bottle of carbonated liquid.
People actually debate and think tapping motions work on soda?? ...Okey..
That's why they're called King of Random

You should've let the just sit one sit for only 10 seconds, so you're only changing one variable at a time to see whether taping helps or not
Peter Jacobs yes!! I was going to suggest changing the tapping to 30 seconds for the same reason!!
Wow you actually made this topic into a whole video!
The one where he shook it once and the least because there were more carbonation bubbles, but the one in the paint shaker since they were shook for the longest there were less bubble plus the rapid speed of the paint shaker interfered as well and I'm most positive that's why there was less soda in the cup compared to the others, I might be wrong, but I feel pretty confident about it.
This can totally be avoided by opening it slowly releasing the pressure then crack it open
9:28 Not sure if it would change the results but the cans of soda should be ice cold.
Came here to make this comment. Liquid holds more CO2 the colder it gets.
I find holding the can from top and bottom with your thumb and pinky, doing a grazing flick to the side, while slowly rocking it from right side up to upside down helps reduce the agitation.
Hmmm.....
Considering it was best to let it set before opening, perhaps instead of opening the shaken immediately, it may have been more accurate if you let them sit for tge same amount of time you tapped the other cans...
