The mariner does want it for the knowledge but he seems like the only one. Love the movie but it seems like the writters didn't crafted the world with much thought in their minds besides making mad max in the sea.
The villain of the movie: praises honesty in children, shares the wealth with his people, makes long term plans that will benefit his followers. The hero of the movie: ignores the needs of the many, abandons people in danger to die, threatens to kill children for inconveniencing him.

Would anyone else like a prequel miniseries to Waterworld where we follow the Smokers and really get a feel for what life is like growing up on this ship? It could still be funny but have a slightly darker tone as we see that living this way would reasonably turn you into a bitter pirate?

I know right? Lmao. They clearly grew up watching a ton of cheesy movies. The original script was made in the 80's and it shows - I think with a different scriptwriter and a much better director the movie might have sold. The story was always brilliant, it's got some good scenes, but yeah it will never hold up as a whole movie and it's shame it got botched so badly imo.
Honestly I think it works perfectly, given the stark divide between the attolers way of living and the smokers, it’s clear the smokers embody all that was wrong with the old world ie, overcrowding, rampant consumerism, greed, etc. given it’s such an old world reference, it perfectly represents just who the deacon and his legion are, people holding onto the last remnants of the world thst once was instead of adapting to the new world like the attolers imo lol.

the issue is there is not enough ice to flood the earth like in the movie. hence why the supplementary material adds in the moon coming in closer and causing the Earth tilt to be fubared or some other stuff

Anyone know which version of the Peter Gunn theme is playing at 0:58 ? The closest one I could find was the 1980's Duane Eddy/Art of Noise version but it's not the same song. It also plays in the Waterworld stunt show at Universal studios when the Deacon enters the arena.

@@hawk66100 even crude oil needs more than a small match flame to ignite it. there has to be enough heat, a match puts out no heat practically. now if you held the match to the oil insuring it didn't get wet, it would light after a second.

Well, I mean they’re pretty much pirates stealing from everybody, so I’m sure they’ve accumulated stuff over time and with a pretty decent fuel supply you can go everywhere
In deleted scene it's explained that they get those supplies by raiding on Atolls settlements but it seems the one they attack in the movie is one of the last they know about. So it seems that Smokers are desperate to find the dry land since they're about to run out of their supplies.

You can convert petroleum into ethanol. Though that would require precise instruments which I doubt the smokers had.
