The fact that paper is like gold in this world and they have enough cigarettes to throw around to the public is always hilarious.

The paper is valuable because it had text written on it, the value is the knowledge.

The mariner does want it for the knowledge but he seems like the only one.
Love the movie but it seems like the writters didn't crafted the world with much thought in their minds besides making mad max in the sea.
Well, they're literally called "Smokers", and the whole point of them is that they refuse to change their ways and stop being wasteful.

the heroes lives are way harder, because every day they dont succumb to hedonism and debauchery, thats why theyre more stressed
The villain of the movie: praises honesty in children, shares the wealth with his people, makes long term plans that will benefit his followers.
The hero of the movie: ignores the needs of the many, abandons people in danger to die, threatens to kill children for inconveniencing him.
Kevin Costner at times was channeling at times his inner, Boo Radley
Watching paint dry is more engaging than Kevin Costner
An ocean version of mad max is still a kick ass idea .

The film was far from perfect, however it has that charming 80-90S
post-apocalyptic look that makes the film almost timeless. And the movie game got man amazing Soundtrack
It’s intriguing how the 80-90’s look make it MORE REAL than anything today, who knew CGI makes everything look awful?
@@christrout9902 It's because it makes it unbelievable. CGI made any idea possible, but it ruined suspension of disbelief. Even for fiction. Remember in Peter Jackson's Kong? That impossible t-rex fight? That was one of the earliest examples. Now it's cancer.
Would anyone else like a prequel miniseries to Waterworld where we follow the Smokers and really get a feel for what life is like growing up on this ship? It could still be funny but have a slightly darker tone as we see that living this way would reasonably turn you into a bitter pirate?

I think I figured it out. This movie has some fun concepts and very elaborate set work, but its tone is all over the goddamn place. The Peter Gunn theme, really Kevin?
I know right? Lmao. They clearly grew up watching a ton of cheesy movies. The original script was made in the 80's and it shows - I think with a different scriptwriter and a much better director the movie might have sold. The story was always brilliant, it's got some good scenes, but yeah it will never hold up as a whole movie and it's shame it got botched so badly imo.
The tone being all over the goddamn place IS the tone.
Honestly I think it works perfectly, given the stark divide between the attolers way of living and the smokers, it’s clear the smokers embody all that was wrong with the old world ie, overcrowding, rampant consumerism, greed, etc. given it’s such an old world reference, it perfectly represents just who the deacon and his legion are, people holding onto the last remnants of the world thst once was instead of adapting to the new world like the attolers imo lol.

The closest one I could find was the 1980's Duane Eddy/Art of Noise version but it's not the same song. It also plays in the Waterworld stunt show at Universal studios when the Deacon enters the arena.

Paper is super valuable. Cigarettes are made of paper. But cigarettes dont seem as valuable as the paper from the trader. Was it the written language that made paper so valuable?
They are holding onto the idea of dry land so paper has value of that idea

If I had a nickel for every movie that had Dennis Hopper play an evil megalomaniacal leader of a dystopian society who is searching for a special item that can lead to another land, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.

@@hawk66100 even crude oil needs more than a small match flame to ignite it. there has to be enough heat, a match puts out no heat practically. now if you held the match to the oil insuring it didn't get wet, it would light after a second.

How TF did they had a huge supply of cigars and booze aboard an old petrol ship, plus powder, water and food to all those people? Kevin Costner was high asf when he wrote this.
Well, I mean they’re pretty much pirates stealing from everybody, so I’m sure they’ve accumulated stuff over time and with a pretty decent fuel supply you can go everywhere
The ship and the pirates founder was bought by and filled with booze and tobacco by a really rich guy preflood.
You can convert petroleum into ethanol. Though that would require precise instruments which I doubt the smokers had.
In deleted scene it's explained that they get those supplies by raiding on Atolls settlements but it seems the one they attack in the movie is one of the last they know about. So it seems that Smokers are desperate to find the dry land since they're about to run out of their supplies.

I think it something to do with the rather limited supply of paper in this world and they waste it for smoking. I also think it just ads up to their whole appearance since they mainly work with gas or diesel engines in their Base/City instead of the MC's with his sailing boat.
It's their only real currency.
