“Sanji’s family really tried to instil the word failure into his brain when now he’s everything but that” beautifully worded and I agree. One of Sanji’s underlying personality that people often overlook is that he lowers his own worth and value. Like how he wanted to sacrifice himself so zoro could live in thriller bark or even back in baratie he tried giving up his dreams of setting sails and finding the all blue because he felt the cooks needed him there are so many instances where he shows this trait, so I dare say sanji’s confidence and self worth is still subconsciously undermined by judge and his brothers. It’s very interesting to read back and notice this pattern after knowing this context.

    • @7thlittleleopard7
      @7thlittleleopard7 Год назад +6

His kindness, too. You don't really notice it the first read through but once you go back you notice just how _kind_ he is to everyone. He had to have that perversion because otherwise he'd be perfect and no-one can or should be perfect. So while I hate how pervy he is, I'll take it as a flaw to balance out the rest of how great he is.

The fact that sanji wanted the invisibility fruit when he was a child is because he wanted to go invisible and escape the abuse. The age at which he left home was very young and he clearly wouldn't have any sexual fantasies at that time.
But him growing up, his defence mechanism made him forget that but he just only remembered wanting the invisibility fruit... And he superimposed his adoration for women (as only people who were caring for him were his mother and his sister).. into that childhood dream of having invisibility fruit... And it got twisted into the perverted peeping thing as he grew up...
It is unfortunate that that's what he believes in the present as truth and acts upon it... But after watching Sanji's backstory, and realising only place he lives in his childhood in west blue when he has devil fruit encyclopaedia is when he was with Germa. AND IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE FOR SUCH A YOUNG CHILD TO HAVE A DREAM OF HAVING THE INVISIBILITY FRUIT FOR THE PURPOSE OF PEEPING.
Even though that peeping thing in Thriller Bark is bothering... it all makes sense now and how Sanji is a complex and flawed character... With insecurities, and extremes.
He was always told to snub his emotions as a child and so he leaned into denying it (the Germa way, as a rebellion) and so he adapted a way of his expression of everything to the extreme.. growing up, which became part of his character, in the present.
That's the reason why, if he loves someone, he shows it to the extreme... Eg: Nami, Robin..
He is attracted to someone, he shows it to extreme, through perviness and simping... All the time.
And when he hates someone, he'll also show it to extreme... Eg: Jinbe in fishmen,,,. When sanji said he'll never forgive Jinbe fir releasing Arlong... And even said Jinbe should die.. rather than apologizing.
His loyalty to Luffy is to the extreme
His chivalry (which is the result of the only kind people in his childhood being hus mother and sister) is also to the extreme...
Even his Rivalry with zoro is to the extreme.
He is a very flawed character. And but only his perviness is the most apparently VISIBLE trait of him which diminishes this otherwise overall great but flawed character... and does a great disservic to his character.

Okay now go back to the end of Baratie arc when Sanji says his goodbyes. He's leaving his second father and rather than the horrible words of being disowned that tormented little sanji's life, Sanji hears the words of endearment from his father Zeff "Don't catch a cold". That must have meant more to Sanji than we could ever know

On not thinking Sanji had siblings: When counting in Japanese "0, 1, 2, 3, 4" is "Rei, Ichi, Ni, San, Yon" hence why the Germa siblings are Reiju, Ichiji, Niji, Sanji, & Yonji. Readers familar with Japanese couldve assumed he probably had atleast 2 older brothers from the very beginning, it'd be like if you named a character "Number 3" or "_____ The Third".

His backstory was foreshadowed in my favorite way! I´m not talking about the subtle mentions of him being from the north blue but.
His self sacrificing nature where repeatedly throughout the story Sanji was ready to die for others. Not because it was for some noble cause (even though he is a very noble Character) But because he has no self worth
He would rather die than hit a woman not only because of his chivalry code but because he would rather die than dissapoint chef Zeff
    his true father

Thank you for your lovely review as always!
Amber, I think this is the exact right time for you to re-read/watch Baratie Arc, especially the last scene where Sanji says goodbye to Zeff before leaving with Luffy. Oda is a genius because he re-contextualizes the Zeff's goodbye moment by showing us how different it was with Judge's goodbye moment for Sanji. It all now makes total sense for me why Sanji cries so hard to the level that he gets down on his fkin knees thanking Zeff for everything he's done for him. It was just because Zeff's simple words to him: "don't catch a cold" (or in other translation is "take good care of yourself") before he leaves. Sanji gets everything he needs there, Zeff answers his inner-child trauma by giving him a proper fatherly goodbye which he never gets from his 'real' father. Damn it I start to cry again.
Sorry for bad English, I hope you got what I mean.

Even his Rivalry with zoro is to the extreme.
Another consequence of his childhood is that Sanji wants to be perfect and not rely on anyone and ask for help.... Because he was told that he was a failure time and time as a child and he wanted to be perfect and not take help from anyone or rely on anyone... For his tasks.
Also, like what someone said in the comments section somewhere, this constant denigration from Judge made Sanji belittle his own selfworth... Which is why he always tries sacrifice his life ... Eg: Sacrificing his dream to help Zeff run the Baratie, or let go of his dream by sacrificing his life before Kuma or him leaving the crew and going off as a sacrificial lamb when Judge blackmailed him into coming to wholecake Island... Etc...,
    All in all....
Sanji is a very flawed but interesting, complex character. And but only his perviness is the most apparently VISIBLE trait of him which diminishes this otherwise overall great but flawed character... and does a great disservic to his character.

The Whole Cake Island arc is great but man it so sad and depressing. I like that the art work of the Island. Very similar to an Alice and Wonderland. We are introduce to so many characters in this arc. Sanji family the Vinsmokes. Reiju, Ichiji, Niji, Yonji and Judge. Man this arc made me truly understand Sanji as to why he is the way he is. From his love of cooking. His reason for respecting women because of the love of his mother Sora and learning to why he will never fight a woman because of the lesson Zeff taught him. When he defend the maid against his brothers at the dinner table. And why his facial reaction to his family name when Capone told him about the arrange marriage at Zou. And seeing as to why he doesn't talk about his family. Like man his family is horrible. Except his sister and mother. I still remember the watching the anime when Sanji would get beat and his dad would treat him like crap because he's human and his sibling aren't because they are build like super soldiers without any emotion. To be told that he's a failure and putting him in a prison cell. His father tells him when Sanji was leaving to not mention his name as his father in which hits hard. As his sister Reiju help him escape.
But one of the cool things like about this arc is a callback to when Sanji use the codename Mr. Prince during the Alabasta arc And his rescue attempt when he was save Robin when she got on the Sea Train. And to find out he his an actual prince. It made sense. I like the pairing of Chopper and Carrot and Brook and Pedro in this arc. And the backstory of Pedro and why he loss his eye.
Big Mom and her children are something else. And yes Capone and Lola are married. But the most standout of her children are Pudding and a character who appear later in the arc.
Luffy vs Sanji was an insane moment when like you man it was difficult to watch. Like I thought Luffy vs Usopp was a difficult fight to watch. But this one takes it to another level. To see Luffy takes a beating and refuse to fight back because he understand what Sanji is going through. And to see Nami reaction in clear shock that she is seeing her family fight as she slap Sanji for going to far to hurt Luffy and Luffy's speech when said without Sanji he couldn't be King of Pirates hit hard. I wasn't surprise of Pudding revealed because I know that Oda is known for having a twist in his story in One Piece. But anyway great review Amber and I hope you have a wonderful day. Stay safe, stay positive, stay blessed, take care and stay amazing Queen of Pirates.

I don't know I always felt Sanji self worth is very low in a very disturbing way🤔 from the start
he was willing to give up his dream for Zeff, give his dream for Zoro cause he believes Zoro is more important then him, and for Luffy in this arc cause he believes he isn't important to fight for.
So I was always imagine he must suffer in his original family from those topics. And his love for women was not cause he really "love" them, but cause it felt he didn't have much of a mother figure other then tough love of Zeff 😂

Just a heads up big mom only has one devil fruit, her power lets her put souls in inanimate objects and control them. It's not that she can directly control the weather, she controls things that control the weather it's just an extra step.

Justice for Pekoms! You had a question about Big Mom controling the weather and i can't remember if that's been made obvious at this point so I'll plead the 5th on that. Glad you broke it up into 2 reviews i think it deserves the time. Idk what people are talking about i think Whole Cake Island is held in pretty high regard by and large. Lovely review as always. Big Mom is a really amazing villain who just shatters any kind of mold you would expect from a woman type character; she truly earned her title and as an Emperor and you really don't want to test her on that. Regarding your question about her powers, that's your typical RAFO. By the way, if you ever have any trouble pronouncing any of Big Mom's kids' names, remember that ALL OF THEM are named after types of food or methods/implements of cooking; so Brulee is a reference to Creme Brulee.
I find it ironic that Sanji's dad is named Judge of all things because of his actions; he's honestly a heavy-weight contender for worst dad in anime. The story doesn't quite explain the specifics of the Vinsmoke siblings' modifications well. It's not that they're completely emotionless since they still have enough emotions to be assholes. Rather, Judge cut out the emotions he deemed to be weaknesses such as fear, compassion and morals in general.
I honestly cannot recommend enough watching this arc in the anime. It adds so much nuance and feels to the arc that the manga just can't get across due to its medium. Namely, this arc has MULTIPLE whole ass musical numbers courtesy of Big Mom and her people. In regards to the nuance, your concerns about Reiju would be swept away in the anime as you can see how she's never the first to laugh at Sanji and she's clearly uncomfortable before she starts laughing to blend in. Fair warning though, if the manga messed you up this much, the anime will absolutely make you cry.
I love your analogy for Totto (Tot-oh) Land being like candy where it's sweet, but bad for you. In the same way, the citizens there choose to live there because she offers un-paralled protection with her Emperor status, but is also an ever present danger to the citizens herself. Not to mention her thoughts on people leaving her team.
Honestly, given how Sanji's post-time skip attitude up to this point turned people away from him, this arc does so much to draw people back to the core of what makes Sanji great while also having us cry out for his wellbeing. Judge goes so far to just tear Sanji down that his already traumatic backstory takes on a whole new meaning of tragedy. When Sanji confronted Zeff, we first accounted it to that typical protagonist spunk. However, now we see that this was a child who had already been through his own personal hell and he'd be damned if anyone stopped him just as soon as he finally got free and was trying to restart his life.
Btw, the Father gang boss's full name is Capone Bege, but remember that manga uses a 'last name, first name' format; so his name in English format would be Bege Capone. Caesar continues to excel at his role of being the group's emotional punching bag because he's awful and nobody feels bad for him lol. The Lola reveal was amazing when you remember that Lola said "My mom is a big time pirate" when she gave them that card. Also, based off the anime, Lola is oblivious that her mom is pissed about her going off on her own; and yes Lola and Chiffon are identical twin sisters. Poor Pound is one of those characters who starts off as annoying, but they're so wholesome you find yourself rooting for them in the end.
The Cracker and Luffy fight definitely showcased Luffy's determination, but it also showcased just what it means to challenge an Emperor's crew. Remember that Luffy completely overwhelmed Doflamingo with Gear 4, but it fell short versus Cracker; granted Cracker's power was especially suited for stalling out Gear 4's timer. Then you have to remember that Luffy just struggled against a SUBORDINATE (granted one of the top ones) and not even against Big Mom herself.
The other part of Sanji's backstory with his mom shows something that a lot of people theorize is a huge pillar of why Sanji is the way he is. If you look back at his childhood, the ONLY people who showed him even a speck of kindness were the women in his life; every man in his childhood before Zeff taking him in was an enemy. Having this kind of black and white distinction in a child's formative years could really explain the shrine that Sanji has built up as his adoration for all women everywhere. Obviously it changes as he grew up and became interested in girls and I'm not gonna excuse some of his more outrageous behavior, but I think this could absolutely serve as a foundational part of Sanji's reverence for women; not to mention Zeff's influence with his brand of chivalry.
The Luffy vs Sanji fight is absolutely brutal in the anime. They throw in a bunch of flashbacks of the moment when Sanji and Luffy shared their dreams and became friends. It's absolutely heart-wrenching with Luffy calling out Sanji showing he knows what he was attempting to do. The anime also shows that the siblings are laughing at Sanji as he's crying in the carriage afterwards. The part that always breaks me though is a moment where they replay a line of Sanji meeting Luffy and them talking about the All Blue. It shows him saying how they would go to the Grand Line because it's "a sea of miracles" in this really uplifting and hopeful kind of way as the visual backdrop is the scene of Sanji standing over Luffy's beaten and unconscious body.
Pedro is a really great addition to the group and kind of serves as a Jinbei-lite for the group as the overly serious guy who gets drawn into the Strawhats' chaos. One thing I wonder if you caught was Pedro's partner who died. He was a bear mink named Zepo, does that sound familiar? Cause it should since Law's most prominent and recognizable crew member is the polar bear mink, BEPO; Zepo was Bepo's older brother! Just another one of those incalculable little connections to the greater world that Oda just loves to fill his story with.
There's absolutely going to be more painful moments and nothing can prepare you for them and yes we're looking forward to it lol. Can't wait for you to finish the greatness that is Whole Cake and make your way to Wano!
As part of my continued support for watching specific chunks of the anime, I've included a list of the big anime moments of Whole Cake that you've already read so far along with corresponding chapter numbers so you can keep track of where you are at with them.

@@Ray_Kaminari I mean in general long arcs are going to cause frustration reading weekly. I think a lot of the post timeskip material would be better regarded if released in larger chunks. Hence why for the longest time I waited for arcs to finish or reach milestones before binge reading.
There is one part I did find repetitive in this arc but I read it all at once the first time and so it's actually my favorite post-timeskip.
Though we are 24 chapters into the newest arc and so far I've actually really enjoyed being caught up and reading weekly.

Physically abusive, mentally abusive, negligent, he encompasses every single facet of being a terrible guardian. Shonen readers are used to terrible fathers, but he has to be one of the worst.

I think you're underselling how horrible Big Mom is. Which in fairness a lot of people forget her more horrific actions since they are so bad they can only be implied in a family friendly story. She's probably my favorite villain but I think Judge is somehow less horrible than her. Though I think I'll wait till the next video to detail why since there's a risk of me treading on stuff you haven't read yet.

Second, sure he will not know why Sanji acting the way he is, since he got to know him the most, but he will feel that something is wrong with Sanji. And so he won't do anything or say anything to Sanji when he comes back and just welcome him with no words.
Cause again Zoro isn't stupid and he know Sanji better then all the crew. He know how to annoy the shit out of him too. So he also will know not to touch something that is painful for him.
