Thanks for the info. And thanks for keeping the video short. Amidst the hunger for people to watch their channels so that they can cash in, I think it gets lost on some of these RUclips-Hollywood "handymen" that some of us actually WORK, and don't have all day to wait while their 45 minute long two-minute-fix video runs through all their plugs and adverts. Thanks for just sharing a quick tip, commercial, plug, sponsor and yappidy yapp-yapp free.
OMG I am so grateful for your video. 2 days of me mucking around trying to fix a Makita and then I googled it and this is the second video that came up.
Thanks for a most informative and well-edited video. I was about to follow your suggested approach to dismantle the chuck when I came across another guy's video who was able to release the broken shank by using a "zip" tie to hold the outer chuck release sleeve in the forward "release" position. I secured a 1/4" wide zip tie around the drill drive shaft which held the outer chuck release sleeve in the forward release position. I then held the drill upside down and gently tapped the church with a small hammer. After a few "tap, taps", the broken piece fell out! I was lucky as clearly this method only works if the broken shaft bit is not seized, jammed, or rusted.
Thank you I needed this video. I kept looking and looking no other video understood the bit of mine that broke was old and had rounded edges so it got stuck actually stuck it tried to strip. I’m glad my bit was made of softer material than my chuck.
Worked perfectly! Thanks fixed in 15 minutes. First time out the spring behind the bearing and the bit would catch so had to tear it down again and put the spring behind the bearing
Dude! I was headed down the same path, drilling, tapping, etc. but figured I’d search here and found your video. 5 min and my broken impact bit was out! Well done!
Top lad thankyou . Mine literally did that today while bolting up flanges. Took mine apart and gave up after bearing came out . I'll give it a go in the morning .👍
Despite attentively listening (and rewinding) your video, I still managed to shoot the spring across the room. You FIXED it! Thank you!! I had to use a fine tip screw driver and drill out a notch to get it out. Cheers.
Not even 5 min to retrieve broken bit. In my case the bit sheared of at the retentive grove and as yours it was jammed in place so no purchase point so I placed a small screw driver in the socket, gave it a tap, tipped it upside down and the piece fell out. GOT TO LOVE YOU TUBE!!!!!
Upgraded from an older 18v kit. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.
Thanks 👍.. my stubby DeWalt dcf801 impact has my 1½ spade bit stuck crazy bad from 1/4 cabinet toe kick plywood. It's down to the bare inside sleeve unfortunately I attempted to follow some other you tubers videos suggestions before finding yours and the ball bearing is missing from prying up on impact driver while in a vise clamp slowly disassembling chuck and attempting to pry again. I've tried everything but this should work!
Having exact same problem and like your fix!! Well Done!! It is hard to get the angle correct so you get some purchase or pry on the busted bit, but I think I'll get there!! Thx
Thanks. Still couldn’t knock it out, jammed. Drilled and used self tapping screw to get a grip. Handy hint if you have to or want to drill, don’t use a drill, put the drill bit in a vice, hold the broken bit against it and turn the impact driver on.
Broken Hex bit in my DeWalt impact prevented new bit from seating in place.got a 1/4 in silicon iron rod. When magnetized, by a strong bar magnet it pulled the broken piece right out no disassembly required. Next step was going to be to wind "Bell wire" around rod to make an even stronger electromagnet. LL&P
Novice here. Experience a similar problem. However, the drill bit was not broken, just stuck. I couldn't get the compression ring off as noted in the video. What worked for me was putting the chuck in a vise, tightening it down, and pulling real hard on the drill itself. The chuck released (pulled forward) and the bit popped out just as easily as it went in.
is that's incredibly stuck then mines permanently stuck... had a 1/2 socket adapter on there that doesn't have the locking notch and it became rounded off on the inside as well as snapped off about 1/8th of an inch back inside the 1/4 hex. i probably made it worse by hollowing out the middle of the bit and trying to thread a drywall screw in it but who knows I'll throw some pb blaster or wd-40 down there and see if it'll budge. just waiting on the epoxy i used to set the screw in to cure!
Brilliant! I sm standing in front of a DeWalt impact driver reduced to 15USD in a because it has a bit stuck inside. I am doing to buy it and try your method. ALAS the sleeve on mine is not coming off.
i got it off in a vice, removed the broken bit and now have a cheap impact driver. Thank you! I lost the ball bearing. At the moment i am using a blob of solder instead but i have a 6.3mm ball bearing (or 30) on order. Thank you!
I did this today with a 9/16 spade drilling out an old century home... old timber... broke up way inside hope this works out tomorrow. Wish me look It's the 3 speed dcf887b only 2 weeks old
I dunno why but when I put the chuck back together the springs seem to get jammed up and the chuck doesn't sit properly it hovers further out I dunno what the hell
I just sprayed WD 40 in the hole. Pulled the tip of the drill as if I was going to put a bit on. Pointed the drill to the ground and got a rubber malot and beat it a couple times in the back of the drill and it popped out in just a few seconds.
I note how you pulled it apart the parts are all over the place. Retaining spring for bearing first Cap or head second Then spring fits in the head of cap followed by washer and then sirclip If you put it together how you had it then the bit you intended to use will not work. Other than that good job
Try ereplacementparts.com They have most replacement parts for the mainstream tools . I’ve bought parts from hem in the past when I got overenthusiastic with a Dewalt demo saw and broke the case.
Thanks for the info.

I believe this is the zip-tie video ruclips.net/video/bObl3haTpyw/видео.html
Did the trick - hardest part was getting the compression ring back on again but with another pair of hands got it done it 2 min. Great video - thanks!
I wish you would have demonstrated how to put the split ring back on.
You’re the man. Simple, straightforward and you just saved me money. Thank you
Dude! I was headed down the same path, drilling, tapping, etc. but figured I’d search here and found your video. 5 min and my broken impact bit was out! Well done!
You save me hours of frustration and ultimately buying a new impact driver... A sincere thank you.
This is the way...Thank you!!! I didn't use the correct bit (impact bit) should be used. Broke off inside and this saved the day.
Thanks Chad - I threw away an old jammed impact drill and was about to junk the second one!
Top lad thankyou . Mine literally did that today while bolting up flanges.
Took mine apart and gave up after bearing came out .
I'll give it a go in the morning .👍
Thank you so much! I'm gonna try this tomorrow. My dad has an impact that's been sitting on the shelf too so I'll fix his too
Despite attentively listening (and rewinding) your video, I still managed to shoot the spring across the room. You FIXED it! Thank you!! I had to use a fine tip screw driver and drill out a notch to get it out. Cheers.
I've heard mechanics refer to these tricky little Baxters as "Jesus clips".

thank you for simply showing me how without opening and closeing speeches
What do you do if the sleeve does not move. Having the same issue you describe but the sleeve will not move after the first couple steps.
Thanks, saved me buying a new impact driver.
Three years my impact driver has been sitting..... THANK YOU, THANK YOU AND...... T H A N K - Y O U
You're a life/insanity/knuckle, saviour! Thanks
Thanks you saved me a lot of time and money was about to just buy a new one glad I saw this first

A HUGE THANKS! Had a rusty bit that broke and I was in trouble! This took very little time and you saved my week.
Having exact same problem and like your fix!! Well Done!! It is hard to get the angle correct so you get some purchase or pry on the busted bit, but I think I'll get there!! Thx
Perfect, I was about to go the same route you took. You saved me a ton of frustration
You sir are the man. You saved me
Thanks for taking the time to post this, im going to fix mine now.
I got spring out my sleeve does not come off
Thank you for posting this! You helped me remove the spring and sleeve to be able to get the stuff Drillbit out!
Thanks so much for this video, it saved me from buying a new drill!
Thanks. Still couldn’t knock it out, jammed. Drilled and used self tapping screw to get a grip. Handy hint if you have to or want to drill, don’t use a drill, put the drill bit in a vice, hold the broken bit against it and turn the impact driver on.
Hi Chad, This was a great video and was very helpful. Putting the retaining ring back on is very difficult unless you have retaining ring pliers.
Just saved me a load of cash. I do drywall daily and thought my impact was toast.
Fantastic advise thanks so much. And thanks for keeping it short!!
Great tip - I used a hardened trim nail instead of the drywall screw and it worked great.

I lost the little ball bearing from my dcf610 when doing this. Looked for 3 hours. Can I get a replacement from DeWalt?
Any tips for taking the retaining ring off? I have tried and failed.
This did it for me! Thank you!

Very helpful thanks for the video.

I dunno why but when I put the chuck back together the springs seem to get jammed up and the chuck doesn't sit properly it hovers further out I dunno what the hell
maybe pit ball on wrong side of retaining spring
Thanks man! Will try that.
tnx it's a big help
don't the washer go on the top spring before the split ring you had it on the other spring
Lets talk about that finger nail young man
Thank you sir👍🏾💪🏾
Thanks a lot. Got mine out.
Amazing! Thank you!
Pull release out and hold. Clamp on vice grip. Turn upside down. Tap. Less than 60 sec.
Thanks brother!!
