Thanks mate 👍. I followed your instructions with my Makita impact driver today. It worked a treat. I still had to grip the bit with a large pliers and tap the pliers with a hammer. But now my Makita is saved. Someone else advised to disassemble on a towel to avoid the ball bearings rolling away- great tip. I would also suggest having a tea towel or something held over the tool as you dismantle it. That will help stop parts springing across the room (it happened to me). Thanks so much.
I have a Ridgid impact driver with the stump of a drill bit stuck in the chuck. I tried a few "logical" ways to fix it including trying to drill it out with a ez-out, tapping it on a hard wood surface, magnets, etc. I searched youtube and there was no hits on Ridgid, saw your thumbnail of three impact drivers and figured one of those must be like mine so I watched and learned. Hi Tim, I pulled it out with a strong magnet, came right out, my 1/4 impact will not pull lugs off! Everything under the hood is not a problem, not lugs! Your tool talent is very impressive Tim, I’ve seen you do some tear downs and install a lift and now this broken bit repair, excellent quality video, ty so much, Bob,
God bless you, bro! My bit just broke today and I was desperate to get it out! I have a Craftsman CMCF800 which I absolutely love! It's mechanism is similar to the Milwaukee you showed. Disassembly was easy and the bit just popped out, a piece of cake. The first tricky part was assemblying the unit, especially getting to understand where the ball bearing was supposed to stay (that is: in the hole, in the upright position). Once this was figured out, the second tricky part was putting the clip along with the spring and holding everything together (praying that the spring wouldn't spread parts everywhere) was another challenge. But worked out ok. Again: Thank you so much! 😁😁😁😁😁
I saved this video because in several tool and construction Facebook groups I'm in I see posts almost every day from people upset about breaking off bits in their impact. In fact I've already posted this video on Facebook in response to someone who has broken a bit. This isn't necessarily the easiest method but it is the surefire method and that's what counts. Sometimes it's faster to go the surefire method and move on versus spending an hour trying to wiggle a broken bit out.
Man, I’ve got the exact makita impact and had one break off deep inside You saved a LOT of frustration Worked perfectly lol just had to make sure not to drop the ball bearings Thank you for real!!!
You are the man!! Thank you for your part in extracting a step drill bit that broke off and was a little rusty on the end which caused it to stick inside that much harder. I was using a ryobi impact which has 3 ball bearings in it. I guess they don't want those bits coming out at all. Now off to give another guy props for putting what little bit of the bit that came out after your instructions, but needed to put the bit in a vise and tap on the impact shaft and it finally broke loose. Thanks again brother. Im subscribing tonight to your channel.
A related tip…if you get a bit that is stuck because it twisted in the collet, there are two things to try. 1. Try using the tool in reverse while holding the bit with pliers, vice, etc. that may get it untwisted enough to remove. If not, try option 2 2. If you can get a solid hold on the bit using a slide hammer attachment, try using a slide hammer to remove it while holding the collet release. You might need a second pair of hands for this. This is why I now own a slide hammer, got a bit stuck in my impact and option 1 didn’t work. Option 2 got it out on the first try.
2 worked like a charm! didnt have a slide hammer but tapped my locking pliers downward with a hammer once it was clamped onto the bit and it popped right out.
Didn't work for me. Took it apart, removed the 2 bearings and it still won't come out, I have a Kobalt 24V I also put wd40 wait one hour and nothing used, tap on the impact shaft and nothing.. Thank you everyone in advance if any other advise
Broke a hard steel hex drive @ 1/8" under flush. Lost seven drill bits, two fingers and an eye while trying to remove it. Good thing I had some brain left to look for your video and one eye left to see it. Big thank you!
I know this is an old thread but it saved my bacon just now. My driver is a Ryobi and it has 2 ball bearings . I lost one 3 times putting it back together. The third time I could not find it so I reassembled it with one bearing and it works. If I ever find it I will put it back in but not unless 1 works badly over time. Thanks for the tip.
Worked well on my Bosch. Unsure why the top video instructs people to bash the driver into something hard with a magnet. No tools were harmed in the making of this video.

How does a Bosch GDX series impact driver come apart? How dopes it differ from the three in this video?
Thank you! fixed my Kolbalt! saved me from buying a new one.
I was so ready for this to work but I have a cheap bit that has rotated inside the sleeve of my Makita which has locked the ball bearings in place, sticking out so I can't pull the sleeve off. It's a short bit too so impossible to get a grip on it it to try and rotate it back. Gotta find a drill press and drill through it i reckon
I've just broken off a nail inside my Hilti hand held nail driver...😢 it's flush with piston. Any idea how to get that out???
Removed lock spring, washer and spring. Collet won't come off and broken bit is still stuck. Is there any hope? Thanks, Rob
Great info. However I have a P237 Ryobi impact drill. I cannot see a snap ring to pull up.
Took me an hour or more, but I did it 😅, thanks for the video
