    Good video... I used to think that foot strangulation in tight shoes meant "fast" as well. Some Bont shoes and the Lake CX201 shoe are the only ones I've found with a natural shaped toe box. Unfortunately, Bont's "bathtub" carbon sole does not work for my feet as my feet can swell when they are warm and the stiff sole edges bite into my feet.

    I've purchased a pair of Bont shoes...most painful shoes I've ever worn. I've tried so many times to heat mold, but I can't get the painful spot to go away. Bont basically just said I'm out of luck, and wants me to purchase another pair of Bont shoes! No thanks. I'll live with my other shoes that hurt, but hurt less.

      It's unfortunate how common that advice is handed out! I would assume that a large majority of cyclist have dealt with wearing shoes too tight or currently are and still haven't been educated to having a proper fitting shoe.

    It is imperative to know your actual measured size in cm these days, compare the size charts of Bont and Fizik. On paper a 41.5 fizik is a 43 Bont. That is a huge variation. If a shoe is too long you may not be able to bring the cleat back if you are a heel dropper or forward if you are toe pointer, correct sizing is pretty darn important.

    I was wearing a size 44 mainly due to a broad foot at the toe area. Which in reality puts your cleats in the wrong position relative to your foot. I have now got a super fit with a Lake wide fit shoe. Cleats better positioned and really comfortable.

    Yeah it’s not rock climbing where if the shoe doesn’t hurt it’s the wrong size 🙄 lol. Bike shoe fit seemed easier back in the day when the top shoes were all leather uppers, I raced in Vittoria’s with the wooden soles, you bought em sorta tight because they eventually stretched and formed around you foot, as long as you got the length right it was easy to take em to the shoe repair guy and have him stretch which ever shoe was feeling tight if they didn’t quite break in right. Today you kinda gotta get it right to begin with except if you get something heat moldable like the Bont I guess .. though I’ve never tried Bont bike shoes I do have Bont short track ice speed skates .. maybe I’ll try some Bont bike shoes. Thanks for the vid.

    • @luke14946
      @luke14946 2 года назад

      Just out of curiosity, What height are you roughly?
      Also Do you find shoe size to often correlate with height?
      Robert wadlow, was/is considered to be the tallest confirmed man ever, at around 8'11½.
      He wore custom made size 37aa shoes. ('aa' is a narrow width, in proportion to length, 'd' would be a 'medium' width, and E, EE, 4E especially the very latter would be considered wide)
      Robert died young at around 22 yearsold.
      If you look up "peter the great" he was a Russian man who was around 6'8 in height, but apparently he had particularly short feet for his height.
      Exceptions to the rule as they say.
      Also i noticed hand and foot length don't always correlate, some guys who are shorter than me, have bigger hands than me, but take a smaller shoe size.
      Interesting stuff.
      How do you normally go about acquiring shoes anyways? If you don't mind me asking.

    Thanks, Mitch. I have been wearing shoes that are too big due to my unusual foot shape. I have a long foot, but it is low volume. This makes finding a proper fit for any shoe, not just cycling, difficult. I just purchased a pair of Bont Vapor S shoes in a 48 and they seem to be a great fit. I will be heat molding them today to dial it in even further. One question, will the heat molding also adjust the fit for over-pronation?

    I bought the Bont Vaypor S about a year ago, and have done the heat moulding process several times. For me it didn’t work. They are the most painful shoes I’ve ever owned. When I tighten the boa over the metatarsal area there’s a stiff piece of plastic from the dial that feels like it’s digging into the side of my foot. Hi. Trying to get information on the difference between Bont wide fit and Asian fit. Even info directly from Bont is a little confusing. From what I can discern, compared to wide fit, Asian fit is somewhat wider at the toe and narrower to normal at the heel with less volume. Can you describe the difference?

    • @sonofacyclist2744
      @sonofacyclist2744  4 года назад

      Sorry, I'm just seeing this. So the Asian fit is just as you said, wider in the toe box and more of a standard fit in the heel. Where as the normal wide is going to be a bit wider throughout the length of the shoe. Honestly, something I should probably experiment with as It may be a good fit for me as well.

      Thank you for the kind words. I haven't tried lake, so I can't speak on behalf of their fit. I have a few mates that have worn them and truly love the fit and quality. For me, the reason I went with Bont is because of the ergonomic toe box. That's where my issue lies when dealing with shoes. It's not so much the mid section at all. So to have a shoe that I know is designed specifically for that common issue was peace of mind. I'm sure you will be happy either direction you choose to go, but if I had to give a suggestion strictly based off of what I know, I'd suggest Bont. I've beaten the crap out of mine and they have proven to be durable and perform the way I need a cycling shoe to. If you look on my Instagram page "Nickarend" You will see photos of my Bont collection. My white pair, I've had for 6 years now. Ridden in the rain and muck and with love and care for them after, they still look pretty new. Bont uses a "Duralast" material which helps keep them from absorbing dirt and grime. I hope that helps

However I know several friends who do not like the feeling of that extra room. They prefer something more along the lines of 3-4mm in the toe box. As long as you have some room for your toes to breath/wiggle you should be good. I'll also add, that at the time of making these videos, I was still learning how to film myself and discuss the topic. @@sonofacyclist2744 Apologies if I sound overly critical. I am an XC Racer who recently fell in love with Road riding. You would laugh actually as my entire living room is strewn with Sidi shoes I have ordered (5 pair) trying to get the right shoes. My original Sidi Dominator 7 in 44.5 fit perfect (from 2009) and now I am struggling to find the same fit. My Sidi Tiger 2s in 44.5 appear to fit. All the others are road shoes and are too small. So the other shoes I have decided to buy are the Sidi Carbon Air 2 (first road shoes) but the 44.5 my toes just graze the end and the narrower toe box pushes my big toe inward, so I am trying to figure out how to fit road shoes and if I need to go a half or full size up from my toes just grazing the end? I would definitely have bought the Bont shoes if I knew they existed. Their shape is what I am experimenting with in my running shoes (Altras), but I am a Sidi Pro and get them at enough of a discount that the Bont's will have to wait awhile. Thanks for the reply and stay safe! I hope you do more reviews on the Bont shape. I also hope Bont makes the bathtub softer and malleable. God Bless!

    I know this is a 3 yr old content, but something I noticed is that you never talked about acceptable lengths of a shoe, what to consider. Do you get a size 47, when you really wear a 46.5, or do you go with the 46.5 as your standard shoe choice?
    New people won't know what is best and are susceptible to misinfo from a shop just selling new people what they might now need. Sure it works, but as you pointed out, you wore too tight shoes for years, because they salesman leaned you towards a shoe size that you probably never should have had.
    Maybe even talk about how Shimano shoes designs differ in fitment from most other shoe brands, as they might require a wedge to help the wearer to correct for an issue most people don't have.. I just felt like this was content about fitment, but really just a cloaked sale pitch for Bont.

    • @sonofacyclist2744
      @sonofacyclist2744  4 года назад +1

      First thing, I would try to call some local bike shops near you and ask if they carry Fizik. If you find a place that does, ask if they will allow you to come down and try some on (Because of Covid). Go down and try a pair on. Not planning to buy them there unless they have a good deal, you are just trying on for size. But, dont tell them that. you dont want them to know you are only using them so you can reference the size. Just tell them, thanks you are going to think about it. That is unless, they have a great deal and you can buy them there. What you are looking for is a good fit that isn't too tight around the toes, but not too loose where your heel slips. If they do carry but price is high, then you at least know what size you need. Then look online for the best deal. If you cant find a local dealer, try to find on amazon so you can return free if needed. 3rd option, just go with the 45. rather have a hair big than a hair to small, especially if you only intend to use them on an indoor pelaton. Hope that helps!

    • @sonofacyclist2744
      @sonofacyclist2744  4 года назад +1

      I wear an 11 in Nike shoes and wear a 45 wide in Bont shoes. Id also recommend making sure that when you put your socks on, that you aren't pulling them in super tight. Leave some room at the end of the sock which will allow your toes to fan out a bit more as well. A lot of times we pull our socks on so tight that the compression from the socks pulls the toes tight together which in combination to having shoes that don't fit properly is a recipe for numb toes. As for US distributions, check out mc2sports.com/

Please don't go higher than the recommended heat temps though as it can really damage the durability of the resin in the carbon sole. You can try to use a thin insole to help mask the issue with the arch, but I'd stay away from thicker insoles as it will raise your foot, which could cause issues with heel slip.

    Just got them. Got two tight spots on big toe joint and metatarsal. Got wide so hope it widens enough.
