    After my last wings- I couldn't leave well enough alone and had to make an even bigger pair.
    The video featuring some cute moving cat ears, and the other elements of the final cosplay, is also coming soon! I think that'll be the last video on Hazbin Cosplays though as I want to do some other stuff.

      Another option is modelshops (the RC kind). Especially ones that also do RC airplanes and such will have glassfiber and carbon fiber rods in a bunch of thicknesses. Thinner glassfiber rods are great because they are so flexible. i've used them in hoop skirts which was really handy because you can squish the hoops to get through doors.

    For your next wing project, I have a challenge for you. Is it possible to make the wings foldable? Like how characters fold their wings on their backs?
    Edit: Now we know it's possible, the only question left is if the creator-chan (don't question why I said that) is willing to do all that work. You could use a smaller pair of wings for this. (It was requested for you to do it more complex than Lilith's wings/cosplay)

      It is possible to make articulated wings, there is a costume wing company that actually specializes in them, so it's definitely possible if you research how bird and bats wings are structured and how they move, umbrellas actually fold out similar to bird wings except they have more than just 2 folding mechanisms, the tricky thing is if you want to make the feathers spread out when expanded, cause then you need a lot of smaller mechanisms attached to the larger wingtip feathers.

    • @steveschritz1823

      Bird wing has the same basic structure as a human arm, mechanics are the same, just longer and thinner.

  • @Brazzelkanal
    @Brazzelkanal 3 месяца назад +92

    Maybe look for beach fishing rods, they are really long and they gradually get thicker and stiffer, so you can start stiff and rigid on the root of the wing and getting lighter and more flexible towards the tip.
    And they are pretty light too.
    And maybe using kite surfing line, it's thin and super strong.
    With a swivel joint at the bottom of the backplate (you can make them from a hose) and a string in a pulley tackle, you could adjust the angle/height.
    Damn I would show you what I mean and build a quick mock up, but there are 16000km in the way 😂

    Here's a thought for future reference: Rather than fill the PVC with hot glue for the fishing rods, you can get end caps for PVC pipe which you could then drill appropriate sized holes in for the fishing rod.
    Also, you might look into using a rivet gun for attaching hardware instead of bolts. Much more compact, much more secure, and fun to use.

    I've said it before, but some more mechanical based maker channel really should do a collaboration with Charlotte to build some form of articulated wing skeleton for her to skin. It would be so cool to see her in wings that folded and unfurled in an properly organic style. Sh*t, if I wasn't on the other side of the planet I'd offer to have a go at it myself. I'm sure MT could repay them by crafting them something truly mental in return. :)
    You're preaching to the choir with he tip about using used fishing poles as cheap glass fibre rod stock. I used to buy these whenever I saw damaged ones going really cheap in thrift shops. I used to build radio controlled aircraft, and you could make wings almost indestructible if you substituted the original balsa or spruce leading edge with a section of fishing pole. They were also really good as pushrods for flight controls. If I needed to join 2 of them side by side, I'd wrap them together at intervals with nylon thread, then soak the thread in superglue. As long as you don't use superglue that sets glass hard you get a really strong joint that's still got enough give to it that it'll put up with all but the most abrupt "Unplanned landings". :D
    The cable rods are also good, but definatly in second place to fishing poles. if you need to use multiple lengths of cable rod screwed together, the point where the brass fittings are glued onto the glass fibre rod tends to be a pretty serious weak spot. The best use I ever found for cable rods has been to screw them all together with the hook on the end to retrieve an RC aircraft from 20 odd foot up a tree that had somehow managed to jump right in front of my model aircrafts flight path. :D

    I so admire your wings! So much detail and engineering.
    I've never done cosplay per se, but I'm the late 90s, early 00s I did costumes for me and my black shire mare. She's roughly 6' at the shoulders, I'm 5'3". We used to ride perimeter on corn-maze haunted house sites, keeping an eye out for people who got lost or ran out scared.
    I did a pretty conventional reaper, floaty overlay my robes, and tacked down to my mare's bareback pad.
    Horse has a long, heavy, curly, mane and tail, so i clipped tiny glow sticks and gossamer rags in them. Also wiped down glowing highlights around her muscles and her leg feathers.
    I made her wings based on the ones in The Fisher King. Basically long stiffened blind slats, painted and threaded with bead stacks between the slats. Long bead strands between the far ends, shorter at the saddle, controlled with fishing rods above the slats. Threaded black Paracord, anchored on the front on the saddle, bottom slat anchored by my knees. Some gossamer streamers.
    Think lion fish in the way i could raise, lower, and sweep them back.
    The top slat was about 6', the lower ones shorter. They were sturdy, and rode in the horse trailer.

  • @jaimieeboo9079

    with how you do the thing with the fishing rods, if u make a smaller pair of wings, you could keep the end two loops of the rod and add a spare loop to both the bottom of the wing joint, and the top of the placemat and thread a wire through those loops attached at the loop at the tip of the wing first all the way through to the backpack straps, then attach that wire to some form of draw string at the front.
    with the correct measurement of placement of knots in the drawstring to hold the weight, you could theoretically make wings that fold the same way bird wings fold and pulling the drawstring would spread the wings and you could tie it like a hoodie to hold the wings open, or tug the draw strings to make hte wings dance.
    further if you have other loops connecting slightly differently (from less joints for example) you could also make more draw strings the same way which instead of lifting the wings, would cause them to flap.
    the position of the loops used for folding of the wings would need to be positioned the same way as the tendons of kneecaps I think, but the position of loops for flapping would need to be the backside of the wings, and might need to be more of an elastic thread rather than a wire.
    Theres probably better descriptions of what im attempting to say somewhere on the internet though x3
    I heckin love how you make all these things

    Hot glue actually melts the foam together kind of that’s why it works so good. I used an Eva foam base so I had a bit easier time, if you glue a bit and let it cool for a few seconds it doesn’t melt fully through (I’ve used polyethylene foam for wings before)

    34:10 My god that range of movement is incredible, they fold behind you so naturally it looks like they're designed like that but then woah! They go so far forwards they're horizontal with you!! It's so cool :D
    Also got an idea to reduce the weight maybe? You used the 3mm foam because of its strength and opacity, but I think it might not be necessary for the feathers higher up! The end feathers definitely need the thicker foam, but the rest are already backed against other feathers meaning their translucence won't be as visible (and also the backing should give them more support against wear and tear vs the edge feathers). I dunno how realistic it is but hey, it's an idea :3

    • @MissTwisteddd
      @MissTwisteddd  Месяц назад +1

      Yeah it's a very good point and I agree with you! Only using the extra thick part for the end feathers that need the extra strength!

  • @jijitoto1
    @jijitoto1 24 дня назад

    For better control/maneuverability of the wings once they're on, maybe consider adding some sort of fabric (lycra?) attached to the wings, in which you could slide your arms into, so that the wings would follow your arms' movements a bit better instead on relying only on the hinges?
    It would look a bit more smooth.
    But dang, those wings are A-MA-ZING!!!! ❤❤❤❤

    Those spray paints usually contain solvents that may or may not dissolve the foam sheeting. It's worth taking care when testing & choosing what you'll use.

    It's amazing how huge they are and accurate too! Speaking of accurate, something that bugs me a lot is when cosplays/artworks have inaccurate wing anatomy and feather placement which makes the look like a weird mess, but these are pretty accurate and look sooo perfect!🤩

    • @MissTwisteddd
      @MissTwisteddd  3 месяца назад +2

      Yeah it seems like it's hard for humans to grasp how feathers work on wings so you often see feathers too small for the wing size or strange shapes! I try and study pictures of real wings to get the scale feeling realistic!

    When you heat bend PVC , fill it with sand, seal both ends, and heat. The sand keeps the round profile of the pipe, distributes the heat, and reduces sag. Good luck!

    Next time you want to do light weight large wings.
    Backpack is a great base, but a body harness would work as well.
    For the structure, in order to keep it light weight, you can take 3/8 to 1 1/4 inch dowels and do it up like a bat wing.
    Keep the 1 mm packing foam sheets. Dense mesh would be easy to dye and be light weight. You can even make them water proof.

    If you find yourself making more wings, or similar with pvc pipe look into electrician and plumber videos for bending "conduit". Lots of tips out there for avoiding kinks and crimping in the pipe, which will make the joint a whole lot stronger. For instance filling the pipe with sand before bending can help immensely.... as well as make a fantastic mess....

    If the length is double, the weight will be 2x2x2=8 times as much, so quadruple is underselling it. Using a triangle shape on the backplate before the first bend might make that bit more secure. This can be done with a long hinge that has a few tubes, separate hinges or maybe even hinging the backplate itself (which might also give you different control of the movement).
    I am going to try hot glue on foam method for a few test LARP weapons, that would be a better stiffness differential to weapon cores than contact glue.
