    Kitties love cat hammocks! They are super comfy and are some of their favorite beds.I previously made a No Sew - DIY Cat Hammock that was totally awesome. It's my favorite thing I've ever made. Now, I'm making it even better. We're making it more structurally sound, more pretty to look at, while keeping all the things that made the hammock great before. Previously the hammock cost around $9, and these additions may only be another $9 or so, depending on what stuff you may or may not have on hand, and what all you want to do.

    Just an idea if you are not into spray painting, what about wrapping the pipes with twine? The cats can scratch it and it will help keep the material in place.

    • @CatsandPats
      @CatsandPats  7 лет назад +21

      That is a GENIUS idea! You could even use bigger pipes and/or make a taller hammock with 4 complete scratchers! Might be another video.. will have to keep thinking! Thanks!

    Love this idea. I wanted to also make a few suggestions.
    Lowes has the corner pieces you were talking about in the first video, but only in the 3/4 inch size PVC.
    Crayons are excellent for marking PVC. It makes a nice visible mark that is easily rubbed off with a cloth if you make a mistake or when finished.
    Acetone will take off the writing easily.
    The purple primer can be used to stain the PVC
    There are PVC cutters sold for around $20 that look like a cross between a branch cutter and scissors that makes cutting PVC really quick and easy without all the mess and rough edges.
    Hope these suggestions help.

    Love your cats. I have a black cat and an orange tabby as well. The black cat made a hammock himself out from the mesh under my box spring so this would be purrrrfect. Pun intended. I see some other viewers have some good ideas too. I love the one regarding the twine. PROJECT!!! You can always get a mat to set it on to keep from sliding all over the floor.

  • @ronyerke9250
    @ronyerke9250 5 лет назад +1

    Acetone will remove the ink. Run some string through the PVC and tie the ends to something, like a cardboard box with holes in it, to paint. Wire hangers hanging from a string also works well. It gets your PVC up to a comfortable working height. It works better if you glue BEFORE you paint. A marker will help you make sure all your joints line up the way you want them to, then just paint over it or use some acetone to remove the ink.

    As long as you do a final clear coat that’s safe should be ok, but your sealant is important. Most cities have recycling centers that collect household chemicals and paint that the public can’t put into regular trash for safety reasons, these places often have half cans of good stuff.
    Always wear a mask and try not to do this with your plants downwind :)
    I’ll spare you the 800 other tips I have for this that fall within my forte bc you were clear about your learning and referring ppl to google etc. plus, you are here to make cat hammocks not become a professional solvents and sealants guy, but I’d def keep Sarah handy when you attempt future tasks that involve chemicals tho bc she’s got a knack for it :)
    The paint is def better after the glue, if you break the edges up the paint will peel.
    Also using a brush on variety, black duck tape, or high gloss will be easier to clean and *ok I’m stopping.
    Anyway, I would have never thought of this on my own as this as a thing to make for the cats and I think they’d like it for many reasons, so I’m excited to add this option and see how they take it.
    NOTHING IS TOO GOOD FOR YOUR CATS! What a lovely and sincere thing you said. So glad you guys are out there trying to make a corner of the world a better place, so far full of cats that feel so contented in their environments that in the background is a near constant participation of happy helper cats, fully unfettered and unconsciously respected and adored. Thanks for getting me through a rough day.

  • @dcwatashi
    @dcwatashi 4 года назад

    How about using e6000 would that work better than this liquid stinky stuff?
    and for your spray painting issue perhaps having a wall of cardboard or some kind of enclosure that way it will prevent the wind from having the spray come back towards you
    You can also glue fabric onto that PVC. Just have the glue working on fabric to fabric and not necessarily gluing it to the pipe itself

  • @Glaucidium810
    @Glaucidium810 4 года назад

    I saw another video where the person sanded off the markings on the pipes; otherwise you might have to keep respraying the pipes every time they get scratched. Also... PVC pipes come in colors (but more expensive).

    You should try to market these hammock and note to self "she is always right" lol. How much weight does your hammock hold? What if you have a plus size Kitty you don't want the kitty to fall and get all embarrassed. No kitty body shaming

    • @jonaeflure
      @jonaeflure 7 лет назад +1

      Nita F you could get no tear animal screening. It's just as easy to work with as material. If you don't want to use just screen you can sew material to it. It will never fall apart. It will actually give more durability to the whole thing. Plus if you have wood floors you might want to consider putting a small nonslip carpet under the entire hammock so it doesn't slide all over the place or rubber leg covers. Hope this helps.♡

    If someone doesn't want to use the glue (which is a better idea, especially if making more than one), you can also buy 2 more T fittings and use them on diagonal legs close to the floor with a crossbar. This triangulation should eliminate racking.
    Also, you might find the legs you cut need to be a bit longer - the cat was very close to the floor with new, unstretched cloth, it might sag to the point they are touching the ground.

  • @Waltkat
    @Waltkat 7 лет назад +2

    Thanks for the great project. May I make a couple of suggestions to make this easier to make? For this particular application, the purple primer you used before gluing is not strictly necessary. The glue will bond without it. Or, instead of using glue, use a short sheet metal screw at each joint. There are self-drilling screws available too, which will eliminate the need for pre-drilling a hole. This will also allow disassembly if required.
    To eliminate sewing, use iron-on hem tape instead. This will conciderably reduce construction time. The hem taped hammock cloth can be machine washed without a problem.

    • @CatsandPats
      @CatsandPats  7 лет назад +2

      Awesome, thanks for your recommendations! I thought the you needed both parts to make some chemical reaction for anything to happen.
      Sheet metal screws are a great idea, and would be nice to be able to take it apart easy. I would need to figure out some way to cap the ends though, so there were no sharp edges.
      I haven't tried iron-on hem tape, I'll check that out. Skipping the sewing part would be a big time saver!

    • @Waltkat
      @Waltkat 7 лет назад

      Cats and Pats The end of the screws will be inside the tubes so there will be no exposed sharp bits.

    What about multi-storey construction for if more than one cat would like to use the hammock in the same time ? This combined with the idea of twined vertical elements serving as scraching/climbing surfaces makes sense to me (note 2 front "legs" used for climbing up could be thicker than the other 2 in the back).
    Another idea is to utilize towels for the textile part.
    What do you think ?
