Hey guys,
Recently in my research on South Los Angeles, I ran across several photos of South LA in the 1950s. Many of these are photos of businesses along Vermont Avenue and Florence. See if you can spot any buildings you may have driven by. There is history around every corner in South Los Angeles. What piece of history do you have on South Los Angeles / South Central - Share it in the comment section below.

Could you keep doing segments like this?
I’d be happy to! Thanks for watching
Wonderful then and now images! Thanks for sharing.
Wow, just wow. These images speak multiple stories, all at once. Coming back in a few months, to read all the comments. Great job, sir.
I love this and truly enjoy your content. Keep up your excellent work
Thanks so much, @redrose1721!
These classic photos never get old 🖼️ I've been to that Carwash, George Washington Prep, and New Antioch to name a few 😊
Love this channel. So happy someone is taking time to promote South LA history.
I really appreciate this! The most rewarding part of this work is when someone else finds it useful, inspirational, or even thought-provoking. Thanks so much for watching!
Nostalgia has a way of reminding us of the past and wishing for a better future. Great video! So creative and innovative!

Well said!
Please do a segment on Dolphins of Hollywood and Central Ave
I knew that area back in the day. So very different now. Good job digging out the historical photos. I remember the DeSoto cars too. Out of production about 1963. The picture of that you called Fatburger looks like a hot dog stand that was on Florence maybe around Normandy or Vermont.
Tom! It’s always great to hear from you and your perspective! I wish I had more access to photos. So much of this stuff is difficult to come by, but when you can find it, it makes the region’s architecture make so much more sense
I know every single one of those locations and have been to all but 3 lol
those old adverts that have phone numbers listed with words like "PLeasant - 9 - xxxx" because you had to speak to an operator to place each call.
I’ve wondered about that. Thank you for sharing this!
@@SouthLARecap I was a super of an old 1920's condo building some years ago on the East Coast, and I came across a business card like that behind some drawers in the workshop.
Apparently Dizzy Gillespie used to live in the building because I occasionally found junk mail addressed to him from the AARP in the recycling.
Thank you for another history lesson 🍻
I think it might be from when the phone company realized they were going to run out of 5-digit phone numbers, so they added a "neighborhood" or "exchange" prefix, based upon where the Operators were centered. Hence the HOllywood exchange, AXminister (Crenshaw/Baldwin Hills), FRontier (So. Bay), etc.
Great video! Brief but insightful: transformation on so many dimensions. The music is beautiful. I'd love to know what it is.
Thanks so much for this!
And yes, I love this song, too. It captured the mood and tone of what I wanted this video to capture. All of my music comes from the RUclips audio library. This song is from E’s Jammy Jams - ruclips.net/video/pclM6Rezkrk/видео.html
@@SouthLARecap Thanks!
What happened? The people? The laws? The politicians? All so attractive, neat and clean then. Now, ....Jesus help us to make it a better place.
still looks nice just shootings and killings you know
Reagan became governor and then President .. both times he systematically destroyed California
There are a lot of videos out there, telling us the 50s were bad- then theres the truth- much ,was better- duh,of course not everything !
Remember it's just a conspiracy and i must be racist 😂
Remember, white supremacists love conspiracies.😂
