  • In part 1, I asked a group of people about what they call this region: South LA or South Central. In this video, we’re going to dive into some brief history on how this region developed. We'll be diving into maps, housing covenants, and a single neighborhood that shaped the region as we know it.
Here's a more accurate map of South LA/Central (and its neighborhoods, including Historic South Central). - maps.latimes.com/neighborhoods...
USC published this brief and informative piece on the history of Central Avenue - scalar.usc.edu/works/historic...
KCET has written about some history points around South LA/Central, including the origination of Black Los Angeles - www.kcet.org/shows/city-risin...

Very much enjoy your channel. I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the Baldwin hills village Green between 1943 and 1960. I went to Audubon Junior high and Dorsey high graduated winter 1961. Eventually moved to Long Beach in 1964 to attend college there. December 14th 1963 I paddled my surfboard around the rodeo la cienega area. The village Green did not allow blacks, Mexicans, probably Asians and not even Jews. Poor white people from Iowa were fine that's why we got in. My dad frequently got a call from mrs. Jennings at the office because the rent was late.

I like your videos on how you break down the inner city of Los Angeles, about compton CALIFORNIA, I always broke down los Angeles County like this in a broader range: ok you have San Fernando vally & San Gabriel Valley " then you have the horbor areas of los Angeles County then you have the greater part of los Angeles area which would include compton, Inglewood Lynnwood Carson just to name a few ,I like how you dispelled that myth about compton California being in south central " intruth south central los Angeles is a collection of communities. south central los Angeles ecompassitated areas of compton Inglewood the intire watts area because when blacks moved in areas like compton, watts Inglewood those city's that I just named didn't have enuff money or extra resources for the black population so being los Angeles CALIFORNIA was a super power economical business wise in Los Angeles was land hungry they took in parts of compton California, Inglewood California & a quite a few other areas Making south central larger & reducing the size & population of other surrounding city's on south central Los Angeles eastern borders . I'm from south central LA & the streets gets tricky & kinda weird & often difficult to explain to people not from LA, see you could be on the Westside of south central driving strait east lane & you pass thru other city's keep driving & you'll end up in LA city again, read this book called LaTasha Harlings the origins of the los Angeles riots, the lady that wrote the book is a UCLA graduate & professor who grew up in south central LA she breaks down the intire history on how Los Angeles swelled in size & population not only that she gives good insight into los Angeles like you did But she also gave the reason why compton California & Inglewood watts etc city & the population was reduced in size this is why people feel like compton is a part of south central Los Angeles because a very large portion of compton is considered south central LA today but read that book because her insight along with yours you can take insight from her and add to your talk about Los Angeles because you break los Angeles down very clear & precise as well , south central is a collection of urban city's,old compton neighborhoods is considered south LA today .

I appreciate this, James. There’s a lot that goes into land politics, and LA can get messy. But I’ll be sure to check out that book. That’s the crazy thing about this region that you point: there’s always something new learn even when looking back at the past

@@SouthLARecap hey whats going on man thanks for responding, yes LA can get very messy & tricky Being that Los Angeles is so popular & massive, and every city in LA county represents Los Angeles but in the urban communities blacks pretty much re-created there on boundary lines especially on the Eastside of los Angeles the 1965 watts riots stated on 116th in Avalon there a 4 apartment complexes 2 sit in the watts area & the other sits in the south LA area & to add to that watts is in south central LA see how confusing that can be but understanding the history what 1965 watts I understand thats would made watts stand out & distinguish themselves
From south LA but the truth watts is a watts area of south central Los Angeles most watts residents will let you know they are literally in the Eastside of LA but being that watts has so much history & the notorious reputation that it has for being a getto there are alote of watts residents that feel like watts is there on city separate from LA but it's just alote of miseducation with in the black communities concerning borderlines in LA you will have gang members from maybe the willow brook area of los Angeles make in the rap game and they will represent compton to the fullest but the geographical map says clearly there actually not in compton but it south central LA this is once again confusing 😉 but I'm definitely going ask you a few questions because your very well educated more on the political correct side its very interesting watching your videos . Growing up in south central my moms lived on 60th st between 5th Ave & 59th in the Crenshaw district & my dad live on 46th between Central & hooper so I primarily grew up on the Westside & the Eastside of south central living with my dad for a while & living with my moms I was always on the east & the west living, I also stayed on 117th in norminde in the apartments & I lived on 120th in borendo so I actually live lil bit of every in LA im in long beach now.

@@dudeshack5577 man, you’ve been all over South Central. That’s a good thing though, because you have a unique understanding on how diverse the region can be. Cream shake and Central are in the same region, but looks like two different cities!
But I appreciate you watching. It really means a lot that other people find this stuff interesting. It’s our history, and I’m just glad that I can be apart of telling the story. Like you said, if you have questions, just ask. And if I don’t know the answer, I never mind the research to find out. It’s what I do lol

yo what up eric i don’t know if you remember me from debate but i like this video.
the only thing i will say is modern maps don’t show what south central really is. south central is east of main. “south central” never truly encompassed black neighborhoods west of the 110. that didn’t happen until much later when gangs began proliferate the area and damn near anywhere black ppl lived became south central

    • @SouthLARecap

Hey man. I remember you on the Crenshaw debate team. Nice seeing you.
But you’re definitely right with most of the east side being called out as South Central specifically (with the exception of unincorporated areas like Willowbrook and West Athens). Far west neighborhoods in South LA have had the luxury Of being called by their neighborhood names (Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park, Crenshaw, View Park-Windsor Hills).
South LA appears to be the city’s first attempt to really unify all of the neighborhoods under one regional moniker…
But thanks so much for watching, man. It means a lot
