  • South LA has several secrets, but very few like this one.
The Village Green, formerly known at The Baldwin Hills Village, and Thousand Gardens, is a diverse, award-winning planned community in Baldwin Hills, the heart of Black Los Angeles.
Built in 1941, the planned community began as a luxury rental unit that initially broke rental records, and bridged the gap between community and nature in the bustling, car-centric city of Los Angeles. However, more than 80 years after its first rental left the market, The Village Green has found itself--a predominantly white community-- struggling with reconciling the changing colors of Los Angeles’ Baldwin Hills community.
In this extended look at The Village Green, we’ll chronicle the development of the community, and how this community dealt with its diversity pains.
Special thanks to Daniel Millner for coordinating interviews and campus visits for this documentary.

My Family brought in the early 60's. It went through soo many transitions from Baldwin Village to "The Jungle" (Because of soo many dead-end streets and culdesacs and primarily 90% Black) The crack epidemic brought gang influences there in the 80's and turned into mostly renters. But now it's changed for the better and looking as beautiful as ever. I love the mid-century esthetic and glad we didn't sell it. We rent it out to a great family of three and couldn't ask for a better tenant. I live down the way in Ladera Hts another area that's named "The Black Beverly Hills" Great content.

I lived here for about 3 years, my family still owns a unit there. We rent it out now.
It's been in our family since the 60s or 70s (before the dam broke and flooded everything on Baldwin Hills

I moved out around 2015. Though there was a lot of diversity, there was still some awkward racial tension.
While the green was nice, on more than one occasion, while out walking the green (former golf course) or letting my son play outside, I got approached by white residents asking if I lived there and where, was I visiting someone, did I have permission to back there, etc.
Annoying at minimum. I stopped using the green after a few of those experiences.
I also had conflict with a neighbor under me who ended up harassing me and my family -- we ended up in court and getting restraining orders.
Security was a joke. HOA was unhelpful. Left Village Green and move to (near) the Hyde Park area of LA (Slauson and Wilton), and I was at peace.

There's a high demand for the unit we rent. Many people have tried to buy it from us.

Garden City design was the blueprint for housing projects. This looks exactly like the projects but clean.

    • @SouthLARecap

I’m my research, I learned that garden apartments was the dominant design thought in the 40s-but the main concept that separated this from public housing developments was the fact it was a private development. But yes, they have very similar attributes

When I was a kid in the 1950's the Baldwin Hills had a lot of open space. Kids went there to "park". Some of us plinked with .22's. One fellow I knew set off explosives he made there.
I had just started college when that reservoir cracked. It washed out a big shopping center below it. Also wrecked many cars and even washed away some houses.
When I was still teaching in Pacoima some students described "the jungle" as a pretty rough place.

I grew up in around this area as a kid to adult late 1960's to 2005 Windsor hills area, going to Baldwin shopping center, BaldwinTheater, friends in "The Jungles." I always liked the layout, landscape, and design of these apts everytime id walk through there going to friends houses in Baldwin hills , going to the movies or driving through to go to Lacienga. Interesting they made " village green" a historical land mark but did nothing to preserve the Baldwin Theater historically. They didn't even mention The Baldwin Theater. smh 🤔😳

Expensive, exclusive, monthly fees are about $1,000... not necessarily child friendly... lots of elderly from ajoining neighborhoods like to walk there, for exercise because it sort of safe, they generally drive there instead of walking a few blocks - the surrounding neighborhoods you can't buy anything for less than a million to a million five.... at least they've managed to keep the transient tent people from setting up...

    • @SouthLARecap
      @SouthLARecap  Год назад +2

@@Grrrr8Day Yeah, your mom is kinda right. South LA, really the idea of "South Central" has expanded with the migration of blacks, beginning in the 1950s when housing covenants were deemed illegal. Before that point, when South Central was limited to the Historic South Central neighborhood, practically anything west of Figueroa was considered "Southwest Los Angeles" and was intentionally considered separate from the working class "Southeast Los Angeles," which included the Historic South Central neighborhood.
As Blacks migrated, news agencies reported South Central expanding from the original neighborhood bounds to more west neighborhoods that formerly had name distinctions. Really crazy history. Check out my video on South LA vs South Central if you're still curious about it.
