  • Took the baby BMW F 850 GS to Death Valley for some backcountry solo riding. Epic and peaceful. I made it up to Chloride Cliffs in ‪@DeathValleyNP‬ ‪@exploringabandonedmines‬ and then ran into a Meth Head. He was on a bender. Doing jumping jacks, sprinting up hill in 50 degree temperatures at 6000 feet while topless. The NPS ended up picking him up. Please be careful while solo exploring the backcountry. I was 1 hour best case from any assistance. When he saw my Springfield XDM he made a smart move and retreated or I just slipped by. Either one works for me at his point.

The BMW F series is a family of parallel-twin engine dual-sport motorcycles manufactured in Berlin, Germany by BMW Motorrad. Launched in 2008, the range comprises the F650GS, F700GS, F800GS, and F800GSA. In 2012, the F700GS replaced the discontinued F650GS, and in 2013, the F800GSA was introduced with a 24-litre (5.3 imp gal; 6.3 US gal) fuel tank and a larger front fairing and screen. The F800GT and F800S both have belt drive.
    Models
Contrary to industry convention, each model's "number" does not refer to the engine capacity. Instead, each bike in the F-series range uses essentially the same 798 cc (48.7 cu in) engine, but with different power outputs and equipment levels. The parallel-twin engine was first used in the F800S,[4] and is also used in the F800GT, F800R and F800ST, although these bikes are tuned to deliver peak power at a different RPM from the GS models. The GS models have longer suspension travel, needed for offroad use.[5]
Although all bikes use the same basic engine, the F800 produces 85 hp (63 kW), which is 10 hp (7.5 kW) more power than the F700 and 14 hp (10 kW) more than the discontinued F650. Engines on both the F800 and F700 can be modified to deliver a reduced power output of 35 kW (47 hp) for European riders on restricted Category A2 licences.[6]
The F800 and F700 are fitted with twin brake discs on the front while the F650 was fitted with one disc.[5] Both bikes had anti-lock brakes (ABS), which were optional on the F800 before 2013 models and all years of the F650.
Previously, only the F650 had the option of lowered suspension,[7] which was not available on F800 models up to 2012. From 2013, both the F800 and F700 can be specified with a low seat and/or lowered suspension, the combination of which reduces seat height to 820-850 mm (32-33 in) (F800) or 765-790 mm (30.1-31.1 in) (F700), and makes the bikes suitable for shorter riders.
    Special editions
    F800GS Adventure (2013+)
Includes a larger 24 litre fuel tank, reinforced rear sub-frame.
    F800GS Trophy (2012)
Desert Blue and Alpine White paintwork, Black and Rally Grey seat, aluminium engine guard plate and hand protectors with large spoilers.[8]
    F800GS "30 Years GS" (2010)
Alpine White paintwork with white/blue/red decals, red seat with embossed GS logo, white direction indicators, aluminium engine guard plate, hand protectors with large spoilers, heated grips, onboard computer and tinted high windscreen.[11]

Thank you. Nice work on getting an F 850 GS. It is BMW's best true off road bike. 21" front tire and 100 lbs. lighter than a 1250. No CCW for me. I only open carry when riding a motorcycle. I have found that open carrying on a motorcycle keeps people from tailgating you. Also, when you lane filter people get mad, see a 10 MM, and get over it without honking or yelling at you. I only ride in CA, NV, UT ,WY, MT, and ID for the most part. On Death Valley NPS's website it says guns are allowed in the park. Camping in CA your campsite is considered your "home" so legal at camp in DV I would assume. Individual National, State, and Local parks probably having their own rules park by park in CA. Ex. Not allowed in Yosemite, period (or locked in compartment in rear of vehicle). I actually asked the DV NPS LER dispatch what the rules were in Death Valley and she didn't know. But, that park of the park is in CA but so remote I didn't unarm and because you go in and out of NV. CA sucks. Remove the mag with 10 bullets or less and lock in the top case. NV open carry legal with no permit. UT, MT, WY, ID constitutional carry or open carry no permit.

How sure are you that open carry in DVNP is legal? I live in CA, am a proud rider and gun owner and open/concealed carry is not legal without a permit, and not surprising, our state makes it hard to obtain one. I'm pretty damn sure it's illegal for you to be carrying a pistol on your belt while you're riding around california. No it doesn't mean that we don't ever do it, but just sayin'

The part of the park I was in is on the NV CA border. Barely inside CA. I figured I wouldn't see LE / LER.
On DV NPS web site it says guns are allowed in the park "following local laws". So, I am not exactly sure what that means. Definitely no open carry while traveling, but your campsite in CA is considered your domicile. Still not sure what that means exactly, but I am not solo riding without carrying. Even if it means unloaded and locked up in the top case of the bike.
      🍻
      Thanks for watching.

@@motorradmikegrossheim just be careful in CA, our govt and laws here are draconian to say the least, as I'm sure most of you know. But yes, appropriately locked up in my side case until I get to camp is how I roll.

I am not a Californian. I am from St. Louis and have been living in Montana. I am sure you would have a cup of tea and do jumping jacks at 6000 feet with this guy on a sick one. He got arrested by the NPS btw. Thank you.

Glad you carry and glad you’re not Californian lol. Always keep one, but be very judicious or you’ll be worse off than the one that was the problem. I’ve been in worse in isolated spots. Just don’t be too jumpy…✌️

You kinda riled yourself up, he obviously just wanted to be left alone and not have some dude on a motorcycle waving at him half a dozen times, incessantly staring in his direction, then following him around! Jeez, just set up camp and enjoy the area. You're strapped so you're ready if shit happens, which it didn't, except in your head.

I wasn't riled up. I have been in the back country solo a million times. Even if you don't like someone you still wave and or say hello. Dude ended up getting arrested, so my assessment was spot on.

1 hour at best with a capable vehicle for assistance with a dude topless in 50 degree weather doing jumping jacks and sprinting around like Carl Lewis on supreme meth bender was a little unnerving. The dude flicked me off and stared at me with a lifeless look when I said hello. I have lived in Oakland and St. Louis so I am not easily rattled, and my choice of words was a little dramatic, but I was uncomfortable none the less.
