Lyrics:
There's a spot in me heart which no colleen may own
There's a depth in me soul never sounded or known
There's a place in my mem'ry, my life that you fill
No other can take it- no one ever will
Sure I love the dear silver that shines in your hair
And the brow that's all furrowed and wrinkled with care
I kiss the dear fingers so toil-worn for me
Oh, God bless you and keep you Mother Machree
Ev'ry sorrow or care in the dear days gone by
Was made bright by the light of the smile in your eye
Like a candle that's set in a window at night
Your fond love has cheered me and guided me right
Sure I love the dear silver that shines in your hair
And the brow that's all furrowed and wrinkled with care
I kiss the dear fingers so toil-worn for me
Oh, God bless you and keep you Mother Machree

You measly skunk! You shot me in the back!
John’s father, Big Peter, was my wife’s best friend. They moved to Oakville Ontario from Glasgow along with a large contingent of friends and family in the early 50’s. When we started dating in 1968 there would be a large gathering every Sat night at one of the houses where everyone would sing a song or do a skit etc. It was real traditional. There would be about 30 people, lots of whiskey and a room full of cigarette smoke. John was often there with that same beautiful Irish tenor voice. His father, Big Peter, sang beautifully as well. Youth is wasted on the young.
I am South African, but my beautiful mother, for many reasons, was born Colleen O' Donovan. Thank you for this so very touching rendition of an ode to mothers, and for the many precious memories of my mam☘
I have not heard a better version since childhood. The lyrics have been given deserved respect.
Ken berry off f-troop
It is the best version. But the Tom Waits version is somehow more heartfelt

This song will make any Irishman cry
Well hello again, Mr Studio. Heard John sing this a cappella in Media, Pa some years ago and it was stunning. By the end of the song, we were both crying. Wonderful song for Mother's Day. Happy Mother's Day in Heaven to my beloved Mom and to John's mom as well.
ShyMoonheart Are you American or Canadian?
Dermott Studio I am very much an American. Brooklyn born and raised. I have been to Canada many times over the last 15 years, mostly to attend John's concerts and also a few of Eric Bogle and also Larry Gowan. Thanks again for the lovely Mother's Day tribute. Great voice singing a beautiful song.
No kidding, I live in NJ.
Dermott Studio I live in Rockaway Park which is almost like a "suburb" of Brooklyn :) My best buddy lives in Middletown NJ and I have cousins in East Brunswick. So we are "neighbors"!!!
I live in East Brunswick... Funny story, I'm your Cousin.
