John came in to my life whith a visite to Scotland in 2005.To visite the Edinburgh tattoo.
I love the music of Scotland,and whith help from internet i became music and a video ,i bought it in Canada via w.w.w.
In the netherlands had i never heard from john ,but this is my chance make him populair by us.
I have a biografie from him ,and i got a lot respect for his work .

I held my Dad's hand when he died and I felt privileged. He brought me into this world...holding me in his arms and I held him as he passed away. This is a sad but a beautiful song. I miss my Dad every day and will until the day we meet again.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there when he died 4 weeks later.
It broke my heart, that I wasn’t there for him.

My father passed away tonight after a long up-and-down struggle over the past several years. This song has been my solace and comfort over that time, reminding me most of all to take every opportunity to "tell him thanks for everything he's done." I still have many tears to shed but I will continue to listen to this song on my own as it was one that we often shared.
I use this rendition by John every year as a tribute to my Dad. He would have been 95 today, April 24, 2020. He passed one decade ago leaving a huge empty space in my heart. Dad indeed made me who I am...I never will forget him

I listen to this in memory of my beloved father who entered into eternal rest four years ago. He never gave up on me, even in the years when I strayed from all he had taught me. I miss our conversations and his calming presence so much in these troubled days. God willing I will see him again, for all eternity. I love you Dad.

I was able to sit with my Dad whom was dieing of cancer, 2mo before he passed in Oct 2000, I told him that I proud to be his son, and apologized for the things that saddened him (a divorce) I thanked him for all the things he had taught me thru out his life... He passed Dec 27,2000 and still miss him dearly, my ol man

I always disliked it when people referred to their parents as "the old man" or "the old woman". But in this song, "the old man" is referenced with such love, respect and endearment that it brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful words and a beautiful voice. Thank you!

Just shows, that within that 6'3" frame, there IS a heart. Mine is gone 17 years now, would have been 99 had he still been alive. Wouldn't want him back here, but I WILL see him (and mum) someday.

This sad song makes me so sad, I will have it played at my funeral, just to remind my children, that they always came first with me. At 84 years, my time is running out, I recall the days I could life a 200 pound bag of wheat over my head, today I am lucky if I can get my arms over my head.

I think of the man I call "Father" he married my mom with 6 kids at home....when we lost him I was there to give him his last glass of water and watched as he passed over to be with God and wait for us....this song makes me think of him every time I hear it....

@@jane798 You have my sincerest condolences and empathy. My father died in December 2000, just weeks away from his 72nd birthday. I still weep from time to time thinking about him but smile much more at his memory. So too will your grief subside and your recollections of him will sustain you both. In reality he will never leave you so long as there is love in your heart for him.
I never had children until 12 years ago . Then lost my rock my father and my 13 year old son. I miss both. My son used to call old man.

My Dearest Dad passed away in April 2014. I sang this song in Church on Father's Day 2 months later. I thought I'll never make it through but I prayed for his help. He did! There was not a dry eye in the house. I love you Dad and I miss you!
This song is done so well by John. It is evident how much love there was between the two. It is truly a tribute to fathers and a reminder to all to appreciate the moments spent together that are so precious and never to forget them after they are gone.

My Father-in-law died just 9 days ago. My own dad died 50 years ago. My FIL played a big part of my life for over 47 years. Saying goodbye is so very hard to do. I know we’ll be together again but it seems like it’s so far away. I miss you John and thank you for loving me.

I love John McDermott, & the Irish Tenors. I also love this song. I feel how stong the feeling is in this song. I love my Dad so much. He & I didn't talk much about things liek that......but it was there. Now it's too late, but I do believe he knows, as I do. I am in tears now because .....I never will forget him, for he made me what I am I miss him....the old man. John McDermott has a special way of allowing you to feel. Sometimes that's a luxury that you just can't always allow.
This was taped soon after John's father passed away. His sister was in the audience that night which added to the emotion of the song. One of John's best performances. John has come a long way in his great career. I was at his first "concert" in the US, which was free and attended by about 120 people. I have met John several times and wish him continued success. My Dad is 83 years old and this song tears at my heart knowing that I might someday be without him.

I first became a fan of John's after seeing him perform at an "open air concert" at the Naval Establishment of Penetanguishine, Ontario, during a "Tall Ships" event, many years ago. He was enthralling.
I also saw him perform this song on CHCH TV, shortly after his Dad had died. His genuine sorrow was evidenced by the tears pouring down his face while singing, and the "hitching" in his voice.
I'll remember those two events for the rest of my life.
John is a credit to his Dad, Canada, and himself.
I so love this song. I lost my dad 1&1/2 years ago. Now my mom has been diagnosed with stage four cancer of the lungs and liver. They shared 52 years of marriage and soon she will be with him again.

I lost my dad on February 25, 2012. My eyes cannot shed more tears. He was a great man, a provider, and served his country in WWII. His generation is the "PROUD" generation. I am so lucky to have enriched his life. At 89 he died with dignity and pride. God Bless all the fathers and the strong sons & daughters who support them in time of need. :)

I sang this at a family reunion once and it absolutely made my night to see my mother and aunt(my late father's sister) holding hands with tears in their eyes. I could hear them both thinking the same, that he'd be proud of me. Big strong men, don't ever be afraid to show your emotion, that night has probably been the only time I've ever been able to sing that song with out crying, even just a little. We need to laugh and cry all in the same breath.

I lost my Dd to cancer in January 2024 I had some time with him before he passed .I made my peace told him he made me a man and how sorry I was for things I did growing up miss him everyday love you dad .Till we meet again may the road rise to meet you may the wind always be at your back and till we meet again may god hold you in the palm of his hand.

My Dad was in Clovis, NM when he died. He'd been preaching in the pulpit for about 15 minutes. He dropped his hands to his side and said, "Good bye" and fell backwards on the floor. I was at home in Texas when I got the news...."No second chance..." to tell him bye.
