The FIFTY - Line 31/50 - Mt. Stimson - Misery Loves Company

- In the NW corner of Montana, a ten-thousand foot mountain rises out straight out of the thick forest. Mt. Stimson dominates the skyline like a giant shark tooth turned upside down. The SW Face of Stimson, first skied by Pete Costain and Andy Zimet in 1997, is a five-thousand foot, steep, exposed and sustained face that guards all falls with a three-hundred foot cliff at the bottom. It's a challenging ski line to begin with, but guarding the mountain is a nine miles approach filled with thousands of deadfall trees, thick forests and nearly impenetrable willows. Add in a narrow canyon, a slick cobblestoned creek that must be crossed hundreds of times and no defined trail and you have the single hardest approach for any ski line so far in The FIFTY series. Joined by snowboarded Nick Russell, Cody Townsend and cameraman Bjarne Salen embark on a three day sufferfest of epic proportions.
This is Episode 28 for The FIFTY, and line 31 of 50 completed by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains along with the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

“Tomorrow we’ll think it’s awesome” is so relatable. It is amazing how sometimes situations of absolut misery can bring us so much joy afterwards :D
Cody: "This is the worst approach of my life."
NW Montana: "This is the way."
Damn Nick has got to be the right dude to go on this sort of suffer fest with. What a great attitude.
Favourite episode by far - the most accurate representation of 90% of my touring.
Thanks Tom.
It's reassuring, actually, to know I'm not the only one who spends so much time on tours wondering, "what the hell am I doing?"
I did shit like this for a long time. You just don’t forget a trip like this. I never repeated the trips where I am got back to the car in the dark on the 2nd or 3rd day.
Funny how that works, but we still always return for more.
I did this climb in the summer and it's even worse.
That sound of skins on packed snow, early in the morning of what's gonna be a long sufferfest... that's why I'm here, gave me chills. So ready for snow now!
was thinking something similar about the sound of crampons and creaking snow on that final bootpack. It just sounded so freaking cold
What an epic mission and one hell of a bushwhack ! Stoked to have The FIFTY back.
"I thought my pack was caught on something, then I realized that it's just really heavy."
Laughed out loud at this, because I know exactly what it's like.
"I'm only gonna ski what the mountain lets me ski..." brilliantly concise, very packable.
Having spent the last 5 years touring in NW Montana, specifically the Middle Fork of the Flathead area, I can confirm that it takes a special breed to access so much of the terrain there. Cheers to you all for accomplishing a true bear of an approach and this epic mountain!
Props man. It looks like some sufferable bushwacking. Vt is similar. Colorado is a piece of cake as far as approach.
@@thepessimisticoptimist9375 lol think Colorado is easy think about the wasatch
@@nonobegone2135 wasatch isn’t that bad compared to montana I lived in utah and now living in whitefish and the access to montana just isn’t easy and developed yet so your ending up doing this shit every damn time lmao
Man, I’ve missed this!
Things I care about while watching:
1) your safety
2) showing the risk involved
…
37) sick clips
…
no) risking your safety for sick clips
The melancholy music 22:00 was a great addition. That feeling when you're so far into the sufferest that you have literally no idea what is going on anymore and you sorta just end up laughing like "why did we do this again?". Also, as much as this series gets me stoked for winter adventures, watching the clips of you researching the beta just motivates me to get work done, whether it's school work, job stuff or things I need to do around the house. Very excited to continue watching more episodes! Also, still waiting on a video where you talk about your diet and how you all fuel yourself for these long adventures.
I'm pretty sure it's a song called Gnossienne. But yeah I agree, definitely added to the mood!
I think it was Adam Hurst on Cello
Erik Satie and existentialist/nihilist/absurdist thoughts during type 2 fun....perfect combo
@@jamesmclean2023 Hello mate, fancy seeing you here!
@@Fitzy258 haha in the depths of RUclips comments! Hope you're managing to get some tours in!?
Best line of all seasons: “This is so stupid already.”
Props to Nick for keeping those vibes high all the way to the end!
I've been looking forward to this video for a while. Stimson is a monster. The first time I got a good look at it I said "I'll never go near that thing." A year later we did this same approach for a summer climb. It was an awesome time. My friend almost lost her shit in that regrowing pine forest on the way out. Glad you got to ski it, thanks for the awesome videos.
Here in the PNW, we just call that “goin’ Spring touring.”
And I thought my ridiculous hikes to ridiculous places were hard. Bravo to all of you.
This video is the longest ad I ever watched at the end of a video. It appeared at the end of a Ben Gravy surfing video.
I sold my AT gear last year and I was worried, but this didn't make me regret my decision. Even if I wanted to (I don't) I could never find someone to do this with me. Tons of respect for Nick for humbly checking off the gnarliest episode yet.
I sold my Harley but I'm never selling my Backcountry Drop skis and Dynafit boots!
I am in my 60s which is fine but what is not fine is I don’t have many friends who can or want to go on long hikes, rides or backcountry adventures. So I mostly go alone which is sometimes not smart but it’s all I got. We do what we have to do to feel alive.
“We’ll think it’s awesome tomorrow” -Nick
LOLOLOLOLOLOL love it
Classic!
I'm 65, fmr. seasonal guide on Rainier and....your gut, INTUITION, can save your ass. Get-there-itis can kill it. I've learned to trust my internal voice..."When in Doubt, DON'T". Climbing destroyed my hips...but not my sense of self-preservation. Totally ADMIRE your awesome efforts, Cody- wow!!!
Episodes like this remind me why I love this series. The raw honesty of it is perfect. Thanks for doing this Cody et al! Best skiing series out there.
Even the most avid and cheerful outdoorsman will be reduced to swearing off of nature when faced with that type of approach. I can’t believe you all held it together with relatively good humor that whole time.
Spot on
Holy crap. Do you feel like you were given a huge gift, because that's what it feels like to me. Be well everyone, I hope we all have a safe and fun season this year.
We really did. I had some deep moments out there, ones that are hard to show on camera, but ultimately the mountain let us in that day for reasons that are beyond me.
I am a flathead valley skier and I support this message
As a Glacier NP local I really enjoyed this video. I'm an old fart who spent several decades climbing and sliding down our nearby peaks. You guys made me feel better about all the bitching and whining I've done about our ridiculous bushwacking approaches.
I just found your channel and I'm sure I'll be doing some binge watching. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
I'm 18 so too young for beer but I just HAPPENED to be drinking kombucha while watching this. I expected you guys to pull out a beer and then for the first time it's kombucha🤯😂
Yuk, Yuk, Yuk. And I thought bushwacking up H 93N was bad sometimes. Perspective...The no fall zone shot was superb! Yikes! Thanks for producing this epic series. Off to trim some new skins! Can't wait to get out and see more episodes! Stay safe!
You not zipping you phone into your pocket tells us what kind of madman you truly are
Remember fellas, a bad day of bushwhacking is always better than a good day at work!🍺🤟. Keep it up Cody thanks for bringing me with.
The violin on the trek back to the car was so perfect!
Nice job. I know the feeling. Bushwhacking with skis/boards is no joke. This is one of my favorite episodes because it’s so genuine.
not even a skiier but I appreciate the physicality of these efforts, not to mention the mental game you need to complete them, it is clear how much time and planning goes in to making each episode possible, pure legend.
That's awesome you notice all that stuff without even being a skier. Cheers to ya.
Wow! I, for one, am now inspired to ski the 49. Glad to have you back sharing your adventures.
Seen a lot of type 1 and some type 2 fun on this channel. Never seen you guys flirt so hard with type 3. Massive respect for completing that. Views aside, you took your sufferfest game to completely new levels on this one. Just glad you didn't have to bail at the base and come back for another try.
I'm very glad we didn't have to either!
The thought of skiing was painfull, this is the first video I tried watching in a long time. I really miss it... Thanks man for the content
I like how they still thanked the mountain even after all the suffering. Really shows their respect and appreciation for nature
Thank you for noticing that, we truly appreciate what the mountains give us, no matter how much of a challenge they throw forth
So good to have The FIFTY back!! Hands down my favourite series on RUclips, incredible work as usual guys! Can't wait for more
It's Been A While by Staind is quietly playing in my head. Good to have you guys back.
At the time of this comment, there's only 1 dislike... shouldn't there be 3? SUFFERFEST. Thanks for sacrificing your mind, body and souls to make this.
As bad as it get's..it's nice after, reminds me of the skiing nights we had in the army at the Lappland Ranger Regiment (Sweden) back in 1984😜...really well done, great film 👊👊
You captured the balance of pain, pleasure and reward.
This is hands down one of the best video series on RUclips
So glad “The Fifty” is back! The facial hair in this episode was off the scale✌️
Amazing adventure and video. Type 2 Fun (Maybe 2.5) for sure, but I'm sure you'll enjoy talking about it around the campfire when you're 90.
What’s not to like, burr as.. stream crossings, glop on the skins, pine forest thicker than… oh, and an epic ski line, bravo.
This is why I watch this series. Sorry to smile at you’re expense, but SOOO good.
I've been watching these back to back from the first line. And boy I could feel the struggle oozing out of my phone from this one. You guys are badass. Keep going Cody. This stuff might be crazy, but the motivation it gives us to go out there ourselves and send it is unrivaled. Love the journey you are on. Just pushing us to find our own journey. Yeeewwwwww
Thank you Enrique
It's in these true sufferfest lines that you experience the full range of human emotion
That's probably why they end up being so enjoyable.
The look on Cody's face at 25:12 says it all. While this was certainly the most difficult approach and wack out, I had a smile on my face the entire time. Great to have you The FIFTY back!!!
Epic Epic project. So grateful Cody. Pinchot creek drainage in your face dude. Bush whack from hell. Many more like it in GNP. There is a good climbers route via Pinchot Mtn traverse via coal creek. Thanks for showing the world our back yard.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
approach was almost comical, thanks for taking us along again! 🍻
Great to have The Fifty back. I am tired from just watching. What a trek.
I like your buddy for this trip. He's like a snowboarder Jesus. I was half expecting him to say "Our father, which art in heaven, saith wait another day for the snowpack to stabilize"
I'm holed up in an Eastern European hostel with food poisoning right now. This Stimson adventure looks infinitely more punishing than my current predicament and has improved my mood greatly. Nice work Cody and team. Epic episode.
Love seeing my hometown mountains being featured. Love the videos!
Glad you like them!
That was long and hard . . . But youguys stuck it out . . . 10hrs to get back to the car is BRUTAL . . . . You have my total RESPECT . . . get some REST!
Bjarne getting into his wim hof alter ego for that river crossing
Climbed this mountain in the summer time. I can confirm it is a GRIND. That summit ridge was so cool with the exposure on both sides. Awesome video guys.
i thought of you boys watching this
What a nightmare. That river wash with a billion tiny trees must get an occasional monster avalanche or fire...who knows. Props for navigating it and giving us another epic run.
#3 days of misery for an hour of bliss. Hardcore Cody!
That slog looked like elk hunting a blow down area....but like 10x worse. Brutal. You guys crushed it. Stoked for more videos from you this season!
The Fifty is back and with it the hype for winter and a good touring season. Looked horrendous and I would never even touch that peak, but good on you guys for pushing through. Serious beast mode.
Man that is crazy I just got nostalgic for your videos and watched your shuksan video just a few hours ago. Low and behold the man himself uploads a new movie for our enjoyment. Thank you Cody for your inspirational filmmaking.
Утром, за чашечкой кофе, обожаю смотреть как страдают Коди и его друзья)))
Stoked to have the fifty back!
Thank you so much for giving this old dude a chance to come with you (sorta) on your magnificent adventure.
😭 welcome back Cody
Don’t know why this came in my feed but absolutely incredible.
Looking old, Cody. You're a legend.
Thank you??? ;)
“Tomorrow we’ll think it’s awesome”
Such a great line. Great vid boys, always inspiring.
Whoop whoop The Fifty is back!
Cody, this straight up inspired me, not to go do ski touring, but to go do some things and get through some of my own shit. "We'll think it's awesome tomorrow, though" is a great mindset.
That is a great mindset to get thru the shit
It was just as glamourous as I always imagined. Fun to watch, though.
I just watched this episode for the second time. It is so entertaining seeing you guys suffer
I'm so happy that The FIFTY is back. This is the best ski content online.
Dude - you have so much cred. Best vid I've seen so far. I can feel your aching feet at the end of the hike out. FAWK - get me a hot tub ! Such real touring...
So sick guys! hahaha i went back there with Sam Cohen and i didn't end up riding the face. Watched Sam and Silas ski it and 20 min after they got done i watched the entire face avalanche off from the warming sun.. It was insane. both the skiing and the avalanche were the craziest thing I've ever witnessed in person.. Saddest part for me is i still have to go back and ride the face.. Different game plan this time though 5 days instead of 3.
Yeah it’s a legit mountain, adventure and face. We too we’re quite worried about half the face tearing down in the warming sun, hence our hustle on the way down
Whoa! This is a great adventure and a great record of that adventure. Some very funny lines, too.
Finally! The Fifty! There has been moments of slight despair, questions of will it ever return. And here we are, on the steps of the new ski season with the fifty rolling once again. LEEEEETSS GO!
Damn. Great episode. It's crazy how quickly you forget the suffering after a trip like this. This captures it well.
The shutter to clap transition was golden
gnarly bushwhacking the common element of many great adventures. Glad you are back! Thanks!
Dang, that thing is like the Mt. Robson of the lower 48, epic!
Great return of the FIFTY, i cant recall Cody looking so exhausted since the middle of a descent... although I am pretty sure that Nick says it all at the end: "Tomorrow we will think it's awesome!".
Well, I think it was!
That was awesome. First time I've ever watched a ski video that made me NOT want to go skiing. Nice work fellas.
well, WELL beyond wor(l)ds. kudo's kiddos! hella epic. thank all of you for bringing us along. head bowed from southwest Colorado...
With part and parcel of this epic line being an epic bushwhack to reach it, the first run in '97 has probably not been repeated in over two decades, until your run.
Two words to describe crazy enough to do this...Nucking Futs!
Mt. Stimson the Revenant! Definitely type III fun. Good job boys!
I was starting to get some Into the Wild vibes there. Thanks for including the full spectrum of the adventure in the final cut and taking us along into those literal dark spaces. Big ups.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks like the winner of that trip was fun. Now just don't make us wait another year for the next episode. Cheers!
If people had to watch this before buying a backcountry setup, they would never buy a backcountry setup. Incredible episode.
Brutal Juice! But great work and an incredible face, well done, again!
"Tomorrow we'll think it's awesome" Love it
This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for
I resisted crocs for a long but when I finally caved and got some, wow I love them. Sport mode makes them so versatile. Thanks for getting another great video to us. I especially love the guests that you take with you on these adventures. I am a skier and my brother is a snow boarder so I like when I see you modeling that skiers and snow boarders can be on the hills together. Too many times videos are are either snow boarders skiers so I like when they are together.
A perfect example of the summit only being the halfway point. Hell yea boys!
WOW that was tough....!! What a start to the new series, giving a new perspective to the very different challenges that you face on each mountain. The moment at 13.36 when you are walking along the peak to get to the line you are doing gave a whole new meaning to no fall zone
Can't wait for the next episode
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cody I knew and was hoping that you had footage left over from last season! We have been waiting for more FIFTY!!!!!!!! LET'S GO BABY!!!! KEEP IT COMING!!!
Righteous return! We suffered waiting for it! Only right you guys suffered too! I jest because I love!
So so so much respect for you guys. Your ability to suffer and persevere is just out of this world. Incredible. Thank you.
Why thank you Jim.
Reminds me of that time when I went off trail at Vail, Co. had to navigate a semi-frozen river on downhill skis to get back to town. Fun times!
