  • Mountains can have a certain energy to them and mountain called Split, located in the High Sierra Mountain Range in eastern California, has an energy with a dark side. Split Mountain is a 14,000 foot peak with a perfect couloir dividing two prominent summits. Visually, it’s a line that begs to be skied yet is guarded by a series of icefalls, rock steps and blue ice patches that make it extremely challenging. On top of that, the towering walls of the couloir present significant rockfall hazard along with an upper basin that can create dangerous avalanche conditions. It’s a line that requires patience, perfect timing…and many many attempts. Over the last 4 years, Cody Townsend, Nick Russell and cinematographer Bjarne Salén have been waiting, trying, scoping and learning about the history of this line, its moods, its conditions and its energy to successfully, and safely, ski it.

I am constantly amazed by Bjarne, he is climbing and skiing this near impossible and dangerous terrain right next to Cody, he is also capturing it in world class cinematography. He has to concentrate on not only not dying, but making sure everything they are doing is captured on camera and looks amazing. He is an elite ski mountaineer and cinematographer.

The fact that you guys show this level of backing out and committing to safety, will spill on to a whole generation of beginner backcountry skiers and definitely save lives for years to come. You guys are building a whole ski culture around smart decision making and respectful group dialogues in the mountains. So grateful for that every time I’m the only girl in a group of dudes and something doesn’t feel right. Same goes for guys speaking up to other guys I guess, especially when there are different experience levels etc. THANK you for empowering those doubts and smart decisions, I’d rather speak up and back out than end up in a scary or life threatening situation.

I’ll bet this video saves lives this year, it’s ok to turn around, it’s ok not to ski it, it’s ok to listen to you gut. These mountains have been here for a million years and will be here for a few million more….have patience: “do rad shit and get home to the family” my favorite quote!

I love how Bjarne could sense your hesitation and gave the "Listen to your gut. Take a couple of deep breaths and listen to your gut." He knew it and you knew it. Just needed to initiate the group discussion. Nick's response "I'm not going to convince you guys, I think we should climb back out if you're not feeling it." Solid crew!

My experience with Skimo and mountaineering in general is that you should basically expect your prospective feature or peak to be a Recon mission with the "possibilty" of skiing or climbing if things fall into place and all parties are in agreement. A day spent in the mountains and coming home safe is always better

  • @MegaSmadge

This was a great episode! At 64, I am now part of the old not bold ski mountaineer clan. Of course the cinematography by Bjarne was yet again fantastic and the line unbelievable but, the focus on decision making was great to see. Far too often this aspect of alpine work is glossed over. I could spend hours sharing moments I’ve spent with my team coming to terms with risk acceptance or voting to bail out as a group.

Amazing as always. I'd love to see a behind the scenes bonus feature where you talk more about the nuts and bolts of filming these lines. I see the notice in the disclaimer about using drones within while respecting wilderness zone restrictions, I'd love to hear more of the discussion where you & Bjarne talk about things like what camera gear/setups you decide to take on any given project and how you make those filming decisions. I think it would be really neat to hear the decision making process, and maybe talk about the editing/assembling process where you figure out how to get these shots, all the pre-planning that goes into shooting something like this, and then the needing to potentially improvise/change plans when you get on the mountain. I'd like to hear the process of getting the best quality you can while not compromising safety and how you make those kinds of decisions.

I have been a back country telemark skier for many years, never at the level you and your circle of friends are at, but I have skinned in the dark to watch the sunrise. And if you think you can't clearly make those things happen, then you are better off finding a different method or coming back another time. That's the kind of style I will emulate my whole life. Been following this series a few seasons now....in skiing we often exaggerate "BEST"...In my opinion..on so many levels...the "smart choices" made...the determination to persevere safely...this episode is my "Best"...the capstone is the toast at the end.... RIP!..& Thank you!!!

Thank you Brett. It ended up being one of my favorite episodes and journeys too. It took a ton of hard personal conversations, a ton of determination and patience but it paid off in ways I couldn't have imagined.

Walking off is the opportunity to live and learn. By the way that line is everything wrong. Cliffed out, and it is zero exit. I love the fact that you are following safe guidelines despite the lack of exit. You probably had the best conditions ever! Nice piece of work guys.

Turning back that many times during series has made you my heroes. If I am ever going to have twins, I am naming them Cody and Bjarne, no matter if they’re boys or girls. Congrats for the success. Happy to see you being rewarded after so many tries.

I'm disappointed that your channel only has 140K subscribers (given some of the other non-sense out there that has millions).
Cody, I have been watching you for a while. This is by far the BEST of the FIFTY series you have done. Your humbleness, humility, and credibility echoes in this video. Keep up the good work. Best channel on youtube.
