The FIFTY - 44/50 - SPLIT - Tragedy and Triumph in Split Couloir - FULL FILM

- Mountains can have a certain energy to them and mountain called Split, located in the High Sierra Mountain Range in eastern California, has an energy with a dark side. Split Mountain is a 14,000 foot peak with a perfect couloir dividing two prominent summits. Visually, it’s a line that begs to be skied yet is guarded by a series of icefalls, rock steps and blue ice patches that make it extremely challenging. On top of that, the towering walls of the couloir present significant rockfall hazard along with an upper basin that can create dangerous avalanche conditions. It’s a line that requires patience, perfect timing…and many many attempts. Over the last 4 years, Cody Townsend, Nick Russell and cinematographer Bjarne Salén have been waiting, trying, scoping and learning about the history of this line, its moods, its conditions and its energy to successfully, and safely, ski it.

I am constantly amazed by Bjarne, he is climbing and skiing this near impossible and dangerous terrain right next to Cody, he is also capturing it in world class cinematography. He has to concentrate on not only not dying, but making sure everything they are doing is captured on camera and looks amazing. He is an elite ski mountaineer and cinematographer.
Agree 100%! Unbelievable partnership between those two!
Thanks for the kind words, Andrew. It's not always easy, that's for sure. The more we know our partners out there in the mountains, what they are good at and how we work as a team the better. Cody and I spent a lot of time together and I feel we getting stronger and stronger together.
What's the viewfinder you have on your Sony? Also, love your work!
@@bjarnebuilds
@@bjarnebuilds and such a great attitude and sense of humor through it all. You guys are awesome!
And the voice of reason and safety
Never have I ever grabbed a beer and backflipped on the couch this fast. Lets go
It’s 7am 😳
@@milesh3493well... cheers! 🎉
@@milesh3493 It's 5 pm in Europe now
Incredible line and even more incredible decision making! This series really sets the standard for smart ski mountaineering. Love your work team 🙏
Still watching but JFC Cody you do SUCH a good job at explaining decision making and emotions in the mountains. “It’s a mix of relief and disappointment” hits so deep.
Thank you for that. Means a lot to hear. Much appreciated.
@@CodyTownsendjust finished and almost tearing up. So proud of you two. Massive congrats for the perseverance
@@TheVirtualSherpayo I love your videos too!
Cody's back! Yeehaw! Nice work guys!
The fact that you guys show this level of backing out and committing to safety, will spill on to a whole generation of beginner backcountry skiers and definitely save lives for years to come. You guys are building a whole ski culture around smart decision making and respectful group dialogues in the mountains. So grateful for that every time I’m the only girl in a group of dudes and something doesn’t feel right. Same goes for guys speaking up to other guys I guess, especially when there are different experience levels etc. THANK you for empowering those doubts and smart decisions, I’d rather speak up and back out than end up in a scary or life threatening situation.
Unbelievable episode!!!! Sooo many correct choices. I would say this may be my favorite episode so far! Thank you for going longer format and not breaking it up into 2-3 episodes. It really helped keep the continuity and story for me going. Amazing work by everyone involved!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My fav video in your series also. Great call to climb back out in Feb. Check that one off. Ski that deep pow!! Love those parts of your videos that us mortal skiers can relate to, skiing on an epic day, hiking maybe a minute -even in-bounds.
Definitely the RIGHT decision to turn back the first time this year. Small doubts add up to big problems! Amazing film, so glad you're back at it!
Totally agree. The patience paid off in the end.
I’ll bet this video saves lives this year, it’s ok to turn around, it’s ok not to ski it, it’s ok to listen to you gut. These mountains have been here for a million years and will be here for a few million more….have patience: “do rad shit and get home to the family” my favorite quote!
I love how Bjarne could sense your hesitation and gave the "Listen to your gut. Take a couple of deep breaths and listen to your gut." He knew it and you knew it. Just needed to initiate the group discussion. Nick's response "I'm not going to convince you guys, I think we should climb back out if you're not feeling it." Solid crew!
100% the kind of guy you want to be in the mountains with
My experience with Skimo and mountaineering in general is that you should basically expect your prospective feature or peak to be a Recon mission with the "possibilty" of skiing or climbing if things fall into place and all parties are in agreement. A day spent in the mountains and coming home safe is always better
Found this channel and binge watched for the last 4 hours. Makes me want to quit my job, sell my house, and buy a winter rig and live on the mountains all winter. Glad people like you exist.
Who's saying you can't? In all seriousness, thank you James.
@CodyTownsend hit my military retirement in a few years, then on to my passions, until then weekends will have to do. Get to live vicariously though you guys until then 🇺🇸
the difference in snow coverage when you guys tried the first decent vs the last is nuts, looks like a completely different line when you are standing above it. Epic Stuff
We don't deserve this content but yet we receive. I have never been more impressed by Bjarne, Cody, and everyone else on the team.
This was a great episode! At 64, I am now part of the old not bold ski mountaineer clan. Of course the cinematography by Bjarne was yet again fantastic and the line unbelievable but, the focus on decision making was great to see. Far too often this aspect of alpine work is glossed over. I could spend hours sharing moments I’ve spent with my team coming to terms with risk acceptance or voting to bail out as a group.
Let’s go, the fifty is back baby !!! 🎉
Been guiding since 1977 with lots of time around 4,000 meters. Simply LOVED the excellent decision making, the bailing when it wasn't right and then getting the line when it was OK. There is so much learning here. I hope many, many young "hard hitters" will watch, reflect, and learn. A master class on how it is done safely and well! Barvo.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
It's been awesome watching the significant development since episode 1/50; this episode felt like a culmination of everything gained in mountaineering skills and decision making. It was also nice to watch just the two of you work your way through the successful attempt in the end. Best episode yet in my opinion for the story, cinematography, editing and soundtrack!
Thank you, glad you like it!
💯% “a culmination of everything gained in mountaineering skills and decision making”. Well said!!!
I live for these, been backcountry skiing since I was 12 and this project has made me a much better skier helping me plan differently and prepare better. I love how real they are with why they do what they do and not just making it look like every other ski film where everything goes perfectly the whole time. This is what it is actually like to go touring good and bad.
It is so cool to see your decision making and mountaineering approach evolve and mature. It had been great to watch, learn and grow alongside these videos.
An incredible episode! Learning to say "not today" has got to be one of the most important lessons in life. Very glad to have you all emphasizing that in this series.
Respect the skier not for what he chooses to ski, but for what he chooses not to ski… thanks for the (cautious) inspiration Cody! Deeply meaningful.
Wow!!! Frickin EPIC Journey!! The cinematography is absolutely beyond words. Oscar worthy. I was on the edge of couch during that descent & rappel. Trusting that board as an anchor point. Wow!!! You guys are amazing. Keep on sending it!! The toast to Kip & Allison brought me to tears. You guys are pure souls. Namaste’ 🙏💕🕉
Amazing as always. I'd love to see a behind the scenes bonus feature where you talk more about the nuts and bolts of filming these lines. I see the notice in the disclaimer about using drones within while respecting wilderness zone restrictions, I'd love to hear more of the discussion where you & Bjarne talk about things like what camera gear/setups you decide to take on any given project and how you make those filming decisions. I think it would be really neat to hear the decision making process, and maybe talk about the editing/assembling process where you figure out how to get these shots, all the pre-planning that goes into shooting something like this, and then the needing to potentially improvise/change plans when you get on the mountain. I'd like to hear the process of getting the best quality you can while not compromising safety and how you make those kinds of decisions.
I always put freeze dried meals in my jacket, glad that explosion was the worst thing that happened on this heads up line. But seriously, the pinnacle of ski mountaineering style. Good to see top pros evaluate safety and practice patience. Well deserved fellas!
Yeah I normally do that also, most times....
Cody and Bjarne, this is your finest film to date. Absolutely legendary accomplishment. Your storytelling and film making are top notch! Thanks for taking us along!
I feel like this line necessitated highly objective-specific mental training on that particular mountain in order to accomplish your goal. If mental muscle was more tangible, you'd all look like the Hulk!
Way to go on waiting for the right time to do this one and skiing to live another day. Hats off to capturing your honest on-site narration, your thoughts and feelings throughout this Split Mt. saga. High Fives all around for crafting it all into an emotionally moving story, and sharing the bonds you've all created with each other through this shared adventure. It been a pleasure boys and girls :) Thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Mark
Amazing job guys, this adventure had me on the edge of my seat. I like the fact that you Bjarne feed off of each other with the decision making. This series has really drawn me in. I anxiously wait for the next episode. Stay safe as you chase your dream.
I agree, your best film yet! Fantastic storytelling! I really appreciated seeing your decision making and your patience to get it right. You guys got me so stoked to climb and ski this winter! 🤘
Also, I loved the Pad Thai explosion 🤣
Thank you a ton for that. Though I have to disagree, Pad Thai explosions in sub zero temps are in reality, quite shitty.
The sunrise on the final day is why I get up before dawn to hike every time. There is NOTHING like a California sunrise!!
It's popcorn time ya'all (Bjarne did an amazing job capturing it, again!)! I agree with all the positive comments below. I appreciate it very much that you take us with you on the journey. The planning, the risks, some "failed*" attempts (*it's not failing if you live another day and learned from it!} and the very much earned reward. Keep it up, and stay "making sense" as a team!
This literally made my day! What an insane line, and so sobering and inspiring to see all the time and work pay off. Such a 50 fan!
Thank you so much for putting in the crazy work to show your thoughts while doing lines like this and simultaneously producing this all. Too good!
had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. learned a lot about decision making and following your gut. cheers to your gnarly line success!
Such an epic episode. Huge respect for your decision making and playing it safe. Having been on that mountain, the amount of rocks that fall into the couloir is insane.
Having spent a lot of time with that mountain I concur
This video and line has it all!
Thank you guys for this 50min piece and sharing all the struggle and emotions you went through!
Can’t get more real than that! 👏🏻
Glad you're back! These videos are so inspirational, and I love how you don't just show the fun skiing, but the whole process, even the research, suffering, and turning back. It feels so much more relatable than the heli-skiing glamour shots that usually get shoved down my feed
So sick!! I love the decision-making in these videos, so inspiring! Looking forward to the last few lines!
Congratulations! A line made even more epic by not going epic.
Had my heart pounding until the very end. Nice work, boys.
It's the irritating music. Heart tries to follow rhythms.
That was gnarly!!! glad to see the 50 project is back, it was worth the wait.
You're awesome CT and others in this video! So many important lessons shared in this adventure. Thank you
EPIC!! Excited for the upcoming videos!!!
This series is probably my favorite thing to watch on RUclips, so pumped to see it to the end
Well worth the wait. For us and for you guys! Congrats on this one.
Feels like Christmas morning with a lovely gift waiting for me. Stoked you're back!
Patience and persistence pays off. Hell yea man. Always itching for another 50 video. This one did not disappoint 👍👍👍
This is the happiest I’ve ever been to see a video pop up in my feed
The best episode of this entire series (so far). Thank you for bringing us along and inside! Can't wait to see the next adventure.
Thank you for this series Cody and Bjarne it is an absolute joy to watch, and thank you to the sponsors for helping make this possible.
Way to go! Props on not giving up on the line after the February attempt and getting it in good conditions in April! It's the best thing when patience pays off!
Extraordinary -- thank you for sharing this Cody!
Great episode. The patience and humility is really admirable
Love the longer format. It’s great to see a more in depth take on the experience and learn about the decision making that goes into it. Congratulations!
So gnarly, that line is absolutely insane
This is what it’s all about people. Thanks Cody and team!
An exercise in rad skiing and caution. Congrats on bagging this one.
Greatest FIFTY ep ever -- so stoked to see all the strategy and patience paying off here. Incredible crew. Nice work, team!
So sick! I appreciate that you guys called it off when you weren’t feeling it. You guys are an inspiration!
Epic High Sierra adventure! Mad skills. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
That sunrise wow. This was a nailbiter of an episode.
Gut wrenching, amazing film. So glad you waited and thank you for showing your whole process.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 all time epic, so glad to have you back Cody (and bjarne and nick)
EPIC! We learn so much from your risk management guys! We are splitboarding tiny lines compared to those massive mountains but still sometimes we have to turn back and stay safe! Thank you so much for these amazing videos ! True fan here!
man I love this. such a real representation on ski/split mountianeering. I have chased lines like this, but no where near as long as this. Love the progression to success!!
Trial and error in the safest way possible, Cody you are an inspiration and a great story teller, cannot wait to see Baffin release
This episode was my favorite so far. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing the grand adventure!
WOW ! Epic attempts, and that sunrise on the summit - stunning
Cody, Bjarne -- you guys are an inspiration.
5:10 I love being up walking a ridge line when the day wakes up. I always feel like those are the moments my wife and I will remember when we are old and gray.
So much respect, amazing episode! They just keep getting better and better!!
Right up there with the feeling I got watching Free Solo. Great video, favorite of all the 50 so far! 😎😎
You’re a great reminder that these extreme activities can be done safely with patience and good decision making! Congrats on all the hard work paying off with this one!
Best part of your videos is you showing how to make good decisions.
Absolutely sick. So fun to watch! Congratulations.
Cody puts his adventures out there with such a great story and presence that it feels like your personally invited along and involved. Always such a pleasure to watch, and learn from, these episodes.
Maybe the best episode yet. What an adventure, what great story-telling. Thanks for this!
Another fine chapter! Thanks for the effort to tell the story the adventure! Much appreciated.
My pleasure and thank you.
Great film, loved watching the process and how it played out over the years. Glad you guys got to ski it in such good and safe conditions!
Absolute rowdy send boys. Love the patience, line well sent 🤘
Absolutely fantastic! Not just the adventure, but the filming, the soundtrack.... everything. Oh, and THANK YOU for the wood jokes. Much appreciated.
Best one yet. I love everything about this film: the lessons, the patience, perseverance, the sheer beauty, and Nick's awesome poetry 🙏🏼
incredible achievements and content, thank you for taking us with you
Reminds me a lot of "Into Thin Air" and the importance of setting and abiding by a turnaround time. You guys made the right call to bail on that first attempt, great to show that in the video as well, you serve as an example to a lot of people.
great inspiration for all of us normal skiers trying to expand our "skills domain" in the mountains. Thank you guys!
Dude! I love that you included your bit about what you consider good style. Its all about skiing the lines you want, while having fun AND coming home at the end of the day. And if you think you can't clearly make those things happen, then you are better off finding a different method or coming back another time. That's the kind of style I will emulate my whole life. A lot of people say it (and a lot don't), but not on the same stage as you, while skiing such epic lines. Can't wait for more videos.
So Brilliant! Congrats! With all your expertise your discipline was awesome to watch!
Scary! Congratulations- agreed, the incredible patience is the thing you should be most proud of. Crushed it, safely, with awesome style
Bravo. Great adventure again. Always keeping it real. ❤
I loved that you listened to your gut!
You guys knew when the time was right!
Very enjoyable!❤
Another amazing episode. Great job Cody and Bjarne. 🤟
Proud of your patience as well!!! Great job, guys!!!
Stellar work and story telling! Thanks for highlighting the decision to turn around, super solid decision making!
Glad you enjoyed it! Much appreciated.
Great job Cody & Bjarne, best video yet! I'm thankful that you are placing safety above all, life is good! Best wishes
That was such a great video - I am really impressed with your story telling, how you've captured the feelings and emotions behind this adventure!
Big BIG respect. The line may never be there again, but the mountain will! The fact that you came home safe is the most important! Keep up the awesome work!
Psyched. Great calls, and love the patience in the mountains.
These get me psyched for this coming season❤
Thanks SO much for including your deliberations--all those doubts and worries. I think it's really helpful. Stay safe!
Simply wow. i think this is how mountaneering is, the essential approach and alsoyour method of decision is simply amazing. I love your style.
Brilliant video, Cody and Bjarne! Simply brilliant. I’ve been watching this channel since the first episode and I have to say this is the best episode yet… for the stunning videography (as usual!) but moreso for the way you showed us what a serious challenge this line was, and especially for the very sound judgment and decision-making you guys exhibited. Frankly, looking at how terrible the conditions of the line in February were, I would have given you an honorary check mark for this line for turning back! There are old mountaineers, and there are bold mountaineers, but there are very few old bold mountaineers! But your persistence paid off in the spring, and I salute you for completing this challenge. Kudos.
