Summit Fever - The FIFTY | FULL MOVIE - Mt. St. Elias - Climbing & Skiing a Mythical Mountain

- Along this goal to ski all fifty of "The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America", there lies a few cruxes. A few lines that stand out as the ultimate test for skiers. Lines that have seen one, maybe two, ski descents in history. One such mountain that is on that list is Mt. St. Elias in Alaska.
Mt. St. Elias is a mythical, foreboding peak that jumps straight out of the ocean, 18,008 feet into the sky. It's renowned for violent storms that come straight off the northern pacific and slam into its icy steeps. It is unknown how many people have ever stood on the summit, but it is known that most people that try, fail.
In May of 2021, Cody Townsend, Dan Corn, Nick Russell and cinematographer Bjarne Salen set out to climb and ski this Alaskan beast. This is the tale of their adventure.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is The FIFTY by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains along with the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

Bjarne is a beast filming everything while they’re all shitting bricks
Ha Ha that was my wife's comment just now!
He does a great job turning on the camera when the shit gets gnarly.
And having enough batteries to last that crazy long trip
And he's a damn nice guy...super humble. I am a nobody in the ski world, just a heliski client, and I met him in Cordova in April, 2017 where he was working on another project. I had no idea who he was until later that year, just reading about the amazing stuff he skis and films.
I find it amazing he can carry all that extra equipment up huge mountains. That seems like at least 1/2 of the job description. I certainly hope all you guys share the load!
this entire series is gold, pure gold
Exactement mon cher!
I agree. It’s really well done.
The avy down the couloir you guys were stuck in was eerie. I hope your next attack includes many comprehensive exit strategies. Stay safe - this was amazing!
We learned a lot about that mountain after that.
@@CodyTownsend kind of goes w/o saying but thanks for putting that segment in there re: bad decisions and then showing the footage of the avys that really reinforced that notion of the bad decisions... Such a cool episode - cheers man.
Yikes! Yeah, that looks like a pretty great learning opportunity.
@@mattb.8750 you guys need to man up and stop worrying about electrolytes and seeing your family's... just kidding ...
You guys should next look into skiing places that are in war torn countries. Carry aks with American or Israeli flags on your packs to really stir up local reactions. Maybe carry an LGBTQžçřþfqæ flag to further engage the locals
Maybe go for a ski in iran with a Free Israel flag or stop killing women thing.
Afriski war a thing, maybe find those white African white lines
All things aside you guys killed it and hopefully this youtube comment will help your volume and ultimately help the prosperity/ financial success of this channel as to better fund you for future endeavors
Bjarne is so good at filming it brings you in like you are part of the trip.
Felt a bit like watching Icarus get too close to the sun. Been super excited by the series. This is the first one that made me feel queasy watching the conditions deteriorate all around you. Would be super interested in a follow up on lessons learned and how decisions were actually made. Seems your senses told you one thing but decisions made ended up being a bit less clear. Could be the edit or reality. Stay safe out there.
Yeah the episode was great even if quite scary, but I didn't quite understand why their exit was (or at least appeared to be) so ill-prepared.
@@yannfontana4542 I got the sense that their exit was planned to be by plane on the same location where they were dropped off, but they decided to "ski to the ocean" as a consolation prize for not summiting, and also because maybe there was no way a plane could land and pick them up there. But who knows...would love to hear what Cody was thinking on that.
I’d imagine the weather where they got dropped off was far worse and more dangerous than the weather at the beach, so I’d bet skiing to the ocean was a weather safety decision first and foremost.
“Which is more important”, asked Big Panda, “the journey or the destination?”
“The company,” said Tiny Dragon.
Another epic adventure!
After watching the red bull Film about this mountain I could't agree more with tiny dragon.
I love seeing the decision making and discussion, and most of all, seeing that it worked out for you all. Great content, adventure, and movie. Thank you for sharing this with us. Please keep making more and stay safe
It’s great to see honest film making when it comes to these big mountain adventures. Critical decision making, the fact everything isn’t always perfect and that life is more important than any line is the overriding message. I love the fact this series isn’t just “sent it bro”, its about educating people about the real dangers of going into serious backcountry and that its not a joke. Do the training, be humble and know when saying stop is the right decision. Thanks Cody and team!
Agreed they really capture the terror so well even from behind a screen you know that feeling of getting yourself into something you can’t get out of
That was a rough one! I'm glad everyone is here to tell the story. Keep it up and stay safe out there.
Nick Russell seems like the chillest dude ever. Like a friend that everyone would like to have.
Between Cody and Shirmer the RUclips ski touring game is really peaking at this moment in time!
Schirmer's edits are sick, just found that channel earlier this month and have watched a lot of episodes, plus he responds to my comments just like Cody! If you've never checked out Mediocre Amateurs would definitely rec as well, that's the channel that got me into ski touring years ago.
@@eaglesfannnn Agreed! Mediocre Amateurs are definetly up there! Me and Nikolai Shirmer are actually from the same town, Tromsø, Northern Norway.
They both almost got taken out in their latest edits. Hope they keep it together in the future.
I would also add, in the most articulate and responsible way possible.
The superb edit, the gripping storytelling, the rad lines and the professional decision making all in one video. Really love this series guys, thank you for suffering for our pleasure!!
Agreed!! The narrative of “bad ass skiers struggle - bad ass skiers overcome - bad ass skiers reach goal - bad ass skiers fist bump” is so done. THIS, this is real, raw pure adventure in its absolute essence. Blown away by all of it, the production, the quest, ALL. OF. IT
@@ewik939 The badass skier's struggle and how they overcome the challenges is exactly what we need to see more of!
wake up babe cody dropped
Yours are some of the best, most honest and humble videos. I need to point out, and you may already know, the RIP in the credits has the wrong name. Reid Sanders, not Simmons. He was a friend of mine. I spent time in the back country with him. Unfortunately his judgement was poor on that day. Obviously even with good judgement things can go terribly sideways in that kind of terrain. Glad you all made it safely off the mountain to enjoy a glorious beach vacation!
Dang. I'm sorry that error didn't get caught. Don't know how it didn't but thank you for clarifying.
Crazy story reading about Reid Sanders and Aaron Martin. Be safe up there Cody and boys!
I´ve been skiing my whole life, racing in the early days and freeskiing in the latter. Im kinda sick and tired of watching skiiers try and make everything look as epic as possible with zero storytelling, whether its big production films or looking cool on the gram. But this, this is honestly one of the best skifilms i´ve ever seen. Thank you for capturing the true essence of an adventure. Whole series is golden.
Thank you.
Big respect to Dan for getting everyone out of the line of fire with some stellar route finding. That man is one hell of a guide.
Remember to tip your guides well! They deserve it!
Amazing series and a brutally honest depiction of big time ski mountaineering. I've enjoyed the entire series.
Glad you enjoy it!
The Mountain Why with Michelle Parker bike tour was my favorite episode up until now. This one probably just passed it. From beginning to end >> INTENSE. Love the grandeur landscapes that can only be found way up north.
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I guess tough times make for great art because for me this is the best of the fifty films so far.
Maybe the best episode/film in this entire series of superb episodes
What a beast of an adventure. Capturing your journey to ski the fifty lines has served as an inspiration for me, and I am grateful for your efforts. What is most remarkable is your vulnerability in sharing your shame with a larger audience when you encountered issues descending the mountain. Those glimpses into your adventure are truly humbling. Glad you are all safe.
Wish I could hit like a thousand times on this EPIC SUFFERFEST!!! Holy smokes Cody, I’ll have you know how much of an impact these videos have for me. It’s not just a RUclips clip here and there, The Fifty is now religion
Definitely hahah, this season in particular has been killing it!
for real dude. nowadays becoming a greatsnowboarder and slowly jumping into mountaineering is a biiig part of my life. and honestly it is 90% cause of these dudes right here.
We all want you to succeed in the ultimate goal of surviving, so in my mind this video was 100% successful . I am so thankful to be able to watch your adventure. What an amazing journey you are on. Thank you for doing what you do. I have been skiing from the age of 3 and I started my son skiing around that same age. I am 41 now and my 13 year old son and I watch your videos. We are both truly inspired. Thank you. I am a trumpet player and as the late great Clark Terry would say, “keep on, keepin’ on”
Good Call, you are still here and so is the mountain!
That was the gnarliest big mountain attempt I've ever watched. Glad you are all still with us
You completing this challenge is going to be so bitter sweet. Don’t know what I’d do without these awesome skiing and mountaineering videos
Love this project.....but starting to worry since it has been awhile !!!! Looking forward to the next one !!!
Just awesome.... I miss my 12 years in CHX ....love this :)
Pretty awesome that Cody documents his failures as well as his successes. We can all learn from each other’s mistakes, so we all become better mountaineers and cross-country travelers.
Pure class that's all that can be said about everyone in that film and everyone who's a part of the fifty project! Pure class!
Any more 2022 videos coming? I love this series
Bjarne some of your best work bro! This video is sick! Cody & Team nice job guys, keep cranking it out, absolute wild episode WOW! Best channel on RUclips!
Are you ok, Cody???? videos??? new lines??? i miss you man!
Just wow. Loved this so much Cody! Thank you for sharing the journey with us.
Thank you for this episode. Absolutly gold.
This series is amazing! We are so lucky for your hard work Cody and Bjarne!
Superb adventure! thank you Cody&team!
This just shows what it’s all about, sending love and well wishes to you boys and the season ahead!!!
A close shave with those avalanches! Always glad to hear a story with a happy ending summit be damned! All about the journey......
One of the best videos I have seen from ya ...reminds me of my adventures in the back country . Never have I did any thing that big but have run into same scenarios out there peak bagging . Those slides after you got thru those areas ...spooky for sure ....glad you all made it out ok 👌....Cheers 🍺!!
Living The Dream! Keep em coming Cody Towsend and thanks for the Holiday gift of Adventure . . . Happy 2022!
What I always take away from these videos, aside from the rad skiing/boarding/adventures, is the decision making. You guys will continue to have days in the mountains with that humility and honest appraisal.....and, apparently, some luck. We have a running philosophy now called "What would Bjarne do?" Sorry Cody, we Swedes stick together. It's actually saved our bacon twice last year. Thanks for the lessons and the awesome adventures!!
This whole series is something really special, such great work that you guys are doing with it
"You just start staring at the tent wall........and you just keep staring!" Sounds like an amazing game ha ha ha
amazing, thanks for sharing this! have watched every episode, this is definitely my favorite so far - the avalanche was really shocking
Love this series. This one was a beast. Glad everyone is down and ok.
I couldn't believe the close calls. Pure adventure... Thanks for sharing!
Amazing episode! Thank you sooooo much.!
Best episode so far! Great story telling and edit. Love that these aren't just 30 min videos of skiing and rather the entire process of planning prepping executing and getting back safe.
Keep up the good work and thanks for taking us along with you!
Amazing!! Thanks for bringing us along!
Wow… watching this was exhilarating but definitely gave me severe anxiety. Wicked wicked awesome film! 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
That was one of thr best short snow films I've seen in a long time. I'm glad you are all safe and thanks for sharing your adventure with us. It's also always nice to hear professionals actually discuss their concerns and thought process. Great stuff!
Wow the pucker factor on that monster mountain. Plus marathon to get down . Great drama! Great vidio Cody!
Glad you made it home safe. Big props top Bjarne on this one!
Ohhhh shiiiiiiit here we goooo
Just the best ever!! So so rad! Thank you for sharing that proper crazy ass adventure guys…I am supremely jealous
"how was the beach"......"oh the beach". Pure gold all the way. Dam this 50 project is just so dam good
I love watching this series and I really appreciate that is not just a highlight reel of your accomplishments.
Never ceases to amaze me what you guys are up to, the quality is just increasing. Another one of my favorite "Episodes". Great job guys.
Truly amazing! One of the best episodes, and love every single one
That will definitely get you thinking with all the activity going on around you. Love seeing this and the thoughts that are going through everyone's heads while attempting this routes.
So inspiring, thank you for documenting this!
Man what an adventure. I really enjoyed listening through your decision making process to step away from the main objective. Those always are the best lessons learned and sometimes the best part of the adventure. Thanks Cody for sharing all your experiences.
Absolutely unbelievable episode. I cannot believe how close timing was for you guys. So glad you made it out. Unbelievable.
Really inspiring stuff. So glad you all made it out, watching those slides cut loose was just bonkers.
Thankyou so much for taking us along, again. All the respect and recognition you deserve.
Brilliant! What an adventure!!!
Another wicked episode! This is truly a magnificent series 🙏
Great work Cody and Bjarne. I hope 'The Fifty' is just the beginning for you guys! Love watching these episodes.
One of the best episodes yet - can't wait for the remix. That mountain is no joke.
Love your content Cody. Have you thought about doing a colab with Niko Schirmer once? That would be a great mix of personalities on camera.
Yes, the 2 ski channels i watch the most, well that and SLVSH.
That would be epic! Love the content both those guys produce
That would be interesting indeed. Cody trying to minimise the risks with Niko who's pushing the limits and finding himself narrowly escaping death time after time.
Great Mountain and a great document on how to navigate risk in the mountains.
Perfectly executed. What a beautiful video. Thank you.
This was beyond epic! So glad you guys all returned home safely. Thank you for sharing all the adventures. Although you guys are way beyond my skill level, you’ve provided much inspiration to pursue adventure goals that are within my range of “reasonable risk.” Thank you and stay safe!
Amazing that you and the crew can keep your wits and humor while filming this adventure...pretty inspiring
Amazing, I think this episode is the best yet.
This one was epic. What it’s ALL about. The adventure 🔥🔥🔥🔥
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH Cody for continuing to bring us the most KICKASS content !!!!! STAY SAFE MY MAN... LOVE IT.
One of the best episodes in this entire series!
There's an extra-special "pit in the stomach" feeling watching an avalanche or rockfall wipe out the line you were in moments before. Nothing quite like it. So glad you were all clear. PS/note to self: Next tent bound epic: deck of cards. Great work on this episode, all around. The mountains always teach and offer memories, even if they're not the ones we think we sign up for!
Bjarne, legend!!! Thank you Cody for your contribution to our lifetime!!!
Simply epic. The intensity of the adventure is real. Wonderful job guys, great teamwork and decision making.
thank goodness you're all safe , another great film showing big mtn skiing for what it really is !!!
Holy crapola! Thanks for taking us to the edge and back with you 4. Glad you made it!
So epic, so gnarly.
Wow. Those were some close calls with those avalanches. Again, wow.
I watched this 4 times already! so inspiring and intense! I love how you guys won the mental battle of wanting to go up vs turning around and made the right decision to turn around and dodged those avalanches on the way down! Anyone watching should take notes and learn from this. The avalanches are a serious wake up call and I literally just finished the Marc-Andre movie "the alpinist" and it details his amazing accomplishments and tragically ends with him dying in an avalanche. Even the most experienced and expert mountaineers can die in nature at their prime. Being able to read the snow and determine the level of danger of avalanche and weather etc is absolutely critical for anyone attempting anything this serious.
Absolutely amazing, you've outdone yourselves with this one
Awesome adventure en video! Nice to see that you show these journeys and experiences where the main goal is not achieved, due to "when it doesn't make sense anymore". Always keep safety at no. 1. Big thumbsup!👍
This episode reminds me of Warren Miller films as a kid, my father and I would go see them every year. The nostalgia and memories, Thank you!
Glad that you are safe Dudes! May luck find you on your next Trips- thx for sharing..
Such an awe! breathtaking
Thrilling to watch! What a grand adventure boys!
It's incredibly admirable what you do, your mindset and outlook on your journeys, the goals that you strive for, the challenges you continue to set, and the adventures you share with your viewers. Its awe inspiring, thank you.
Best episode so far!!
Another epic. This one was inspiring and humbling.
Just want share how much I've enjoyed and been motivated by your adventures. Thanks for your courage, vision, and zest for your work :)
AWESOME! Sharing this with my entire crew. I think your audience may be looking forward to your return to St. Elias as much as you are. Thank you once again for sharing this with us!
This gave me chills!
Epic, what a film. Glad you guys are safe. Bjarne is a hell of guy to film all that too!
