The Super C: South America's Secret Giant

- The hunt for Classics continues. After 6 years of following, climbing and skiing 46 of the lines and mountains in the book "The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America", it's time to pursue a personally inspired and modern list of classics.
The Super C might be the most infamous ski line in South America. Hidden from view but only a short hike from the ski area, the Super C is a couloir that rivals some of the best couloirs on the planet. But it's proximity to the ski area at Portillo, Chile doesn't mean it's a gimme. A 45-50 entrance into a leg burning 5000ft descent provides a challenge for all skiers. The FIFTY+ goes international and is joined by legendary skier and Mr. Portillo himself Chris Davenport, Elyse Saugstad and filmmaker / godfather of freeskiing Mike Douglas.

SALOMON MTN Summit Boot: An incredible mix of lightweight walkability and downhill ski performance. As a 200lb ex-ski racer, I've been amazed how well this 1200g boot can ski. From Emerald Bay Chutes to Alaskan Expeditions, these are my go to's. bit.ly/4h3ZcFk
SALOMON MTN Pure Binding: Maybe the most reliable and durable tech binding of the last 20 years. Simple, strong and effective. There is a reason this binding hasn't changed it 7+ years, it's hard to make it better. And when I'm at the resort or just beyond, the SALOMON SHIFT is my easy go to with full DIN settings and touring mode with a quick crossover. bit.ly/4fTJETx
SMITH Pursuit Glasses: If it's stormy or sunny, you're biking or hiking, ski touring and downhill shredding, the Pursuits were made for it. The all-around, go anywhere, do anything glasses. Hyperlite Mountain Gear- Making a collection of packs (and durable lightweight accessories) that cross everything from a super light 27oz day pack in the Aspect 32 to a four season do everything pack in the Headwall 55. I know you wanted to resist the Wes Anderson thing....but I'm so glad you did it. I'm cackling 😆
Why thank you.
A little 2D and flat for me
;-)
Thanks for expanding the Fifty Cody, these episodes are great!
It’s fun to not by bound by a book
@@CodyTownsendWhat time of year was this? Sorry if you said it and I missed it.
@@deetrane North american fall, most likely. Looks like early spring skiing in Chile.
Mike Douglas’s cinematography is top notch and I loved the Wes Anderson section 😂
Mike crushed it!
Leaving this here as a personal bookmark. First ski film my infant son and I watched together. Will always remember it now.
Congrats!
Best episode of the fifty plus so far!
Thanks!
Falling asleep in my food was my childhood specialty. That final clip made me laugh out loud. Thanks.
Cheers
An absolute "classic" of the Fifty+ ! Free flowing adventure, filming, education, cinematography, music, and FUN! Muchas gracias! Looking forward to more along these "lines" in the future! SUPERB!
So great to see Chris D and Mike D still at it!
Dudes are heroes of my childhood
I was in Portillo in 2006, when Chris, Shane and Shane's mom showed up a week early before their steep week camp. They all did the Super C. Also got to see Shane ski off a cliff with his parachute. It was fun hanging out in the bar hearing their stories, particularly the ones about Shane when he was a kid.
MIKE D!!!!!!!
He put his sassy pants on for this one too 😂
Mike Douglas is a classic! 👑😎
The best snow adventure channel on here by miles. Keep it up Cody and thanks for putting these out there for us to enjoy.
The quality keeps on getting better and that is a high bar. great camera/vid perspectives, excellent banter, definite wow factor, loved it
Wow....Another Classic to add to the greatest 50 and let me tell you ....The Company you chose...omg CLASS people Chris Davenport and Mike Douglas and of course your Stunning Wife !! (Cant get much better....and of course your CARPET Skier son...) ...commentary omg ....(he is growing like a Weed)...lol Thank you from this Cdn Skier, snowboarder, kitesurfer....loved every second of your video!! P.s All that was missing (Yepp you guessed it...Bjorne....love that guy!! 1000 islands Canada
I really don't even care even if Ski Portillo paid for part of this as a promotional video it was just great. In other words: the best advertisement is to honestly represent something worthwhile.
They did not, they extended our stay and covered lodging, but wasn’t paid for. But regardless of all that, glad it connected with ya!
Love the Wes Anderson nod! Some tropes never get old!
Superb! Grand Budapest/Wes Anderson homage absolutely worth it!
Awesome! Steve is awesome, don’t know him on a personal level but every time I see him around he is kind and shares good energy! Great episode Cody!!
Is is just what we needed! Ive been rewatching the 50 for the third time just a week or two ago
Tuned in for a minute, stayed for the whole thing! Im invested!
00:16:44 ♬ We're skiing with my FRIENDS..... down the SUPER C!!!! ♪ ♫ LOVE IT! Thanks for keeping the series alive.
Totally a classic! Awesome video as usual. This one has me dreaming of Portillo.
21:37 love that parting shot of the kid falling asleep at the dinner table. A good day!
Total classic. Skied a lotta places, that is a powder line that never ends. The crux turns a lot of people back but what a prize! Makes me feel a lot better to hear these guys say it can be a four hour climb in deep snow. It was.
This episode, a Classic!
Another epic descent... Thanks for taking these old knees along!
That was a fun video, thanks! And the spaghetti napper, que adorable!
Loving the extension of the 50... Soo good! click and subscribe was hilarious. Thanks for taking us along (especially when we the current 'great' conditions in Tahoe!)
Watching you follow your passion for these classic lines is nothing short of amazing. Thanks for great content, Cody! 🤍
Great watch, thanks team.
I love this episode!
Honestly, it’s great to see you out with your family vs. being in a violent snowstorm on some dangerous mountain I’ll never go to with “a bunch of dudes.” 😂 I also learned about a very cool ski resort that I’d never heard of. And the Wes Anderson theme was fun, too. I’m all for more “bougie” episodes like this one.
Btw, your wife is awesome! So great that you can have such amazing adventures together!
I’m not a big commenter but I have to vote. Totally a classic, not all have to be a suffer fest like the Watson, the setting is part of what makes this a classic. It’s ok for some to be easy, if a striking line lands at the door of a fine chalet that’s CLASSIC! Especially since it’s fairly rare. If cross couloir ended at Vista Bhan it’d still be a classic… it’s so unique!
Also I’m gonna vote for pioneer here too. If you step into girlie you see that line and say that’d be BA to ski. 2/2 on classics bravo.
Great trip down under, showcasing a legendary ski station that I've only seen on video. Thanks for including Chris D. The last feature I saw Chris featured in was from Matchstick Productions, in the 1990s. You all deserved multiple rounds of liquid altitude for your epic descent!
Another gem of a production !!!!! Amazing ! Thank you Cody !
Glad you got a video with Dav! He’s a good egg!
Definitely Wes Anderson vibes 😅.. epic 🙌🤙
Love the Was Anderson humor. Great episode. Glad you guys are having fun!
Really well put together video! Top Notch!
Classic line, classic video. Inspiring to see you adventuring with the family.
It was a real treat to have them along for the ride.
Great that you showed some family shots. Shows you can ski as a family.
I've never felt more kinship to Chris Davenport than at minute 4:10
I think everyone knew it was already a classic, but epic film nonetheless! my fav parts got to be the Wes Anderson clips + the party lap all three down the couloir together!
Did a week in Portillo in 2013. That place is special. We got some great conditions too, lots of snow. But that unfortunately kept us from bagging the super C. Happy to see this video, felt like I was there!
Portillo is pretty special.
Beautifully filmed and produced video guys! AWESOME!
Such an epic line!!
The terrain in chile and Argentina is mind blowing, the temps are 💯, the snow and wind are problems
Idk why, but "THIS IS ENJOYABLE!" got me hahaha
Awesome Cody! I was fortunate to ride super C in 2012 and it totally made me have the Freeride bug! Always stoked to see your adventures and looking forward to what you’ve got line up!
Another one for the bucket list!!
“Like! Follow, subscribe, thank you! #TrulyBlessed!” 😂 OMG I almost spit out my coffee. Freakin hilarious.
Good vibes in this one! Cool to have Mike and Chris there!
Muy bien amigos. Looks like a really fun shred. I guess Mike as a camera guy in the mountains is a no brainer. Talented skier and knowledgeable about what will look good through a lens.
Couldn't agree more.
Just fantastic. Bravo!
Hell yeah, dude. Keep shredding.
Fun episode! Beautiful line!
Thanks for all your great work and for sharing your adventures!
Cody + Elyse, Mikey Douglas, AND Chris Davenport??? Awesome!! 4:10 🤣🤣
Well done!
Heavy hitter crew! Cheers mang.
Elyse is a national treasure.
Nice video, it's also fun when it's not about the suffering! Tunnel run looked like a ton of fun too.
Talking about the uniqueness of Super C (looong couloir, easily accessible, back to chairlift) reminded me of some runs at Pitztal in Austria. Probably the most similar would be Weite Rinne, which has a 3 minute approach to top out at 3240m. The run is 1500 meters top to bottom, but I wouldn't count the last 300 or so because they're just the path back to the lift. There's also a 250m part in the middle that can't be considered a couloir.
So, Super C is a 900m couloir with an apron bringing the run to around 1400-1500m. Weite Rinne is a 600m couloir, 250m apron, and another 350m couloir-like run, to a 300hm traverse back to the lift. Probably too accessible to be a classic, but I'd say it gets skied less than Super C😁
Wow ! Have recently added Chileans to my family - must ask them about this - that hotel is a classic !
hahaha, the „ski mountaineer“ killed me 😂
The biggest challenge w/ this crew is when to have Revelshine wine or Tincup Whiskey. Luckily they're flexible 🤣
Love this!
Great footage...Thanks!
That ending scene with junior falling asleep in the spaghetti bowl was priceless 🤣
Great video!!
This place looks amazing!
Epic, loved every minute of it. Props to you and Elyse for still chasing big mountains... I'm still waiting for you to ski all 54 14ers in CO.. Maybe get Dav back into it?
Best Opening Line of Any 50 Episode Elise, Way to Steal the Boy's Thunder
Hi Cody, very nice video as always. The fifty gave me lots of motivation to go more skitours. And now I like it more than anything else on skis 😅
PS: We met each other ages ago at the Diavolezza ski resort (Near St Moritz/Engadin valley) where you did something with the Powder Mag if I remember right.
Just want to add, that I immediately thought you are a super nice and humble guy, despite beeing such a great skier (which everybody noticed when they looked out the gondola at the right moment).
Cheers, Freddy
Bucket list 🤯
Looking forward to this!
yeah buddy!! that kind of s*** i wanted haha happy you find back :P
Great film!
this is my favorite video of yours Cody. I need the soundtrack, good skiing music. it's very bouncy
Came here to say this, would love to see some music credits, great soundtrack!
Chile! What a beautiful place. I have eaten a Calafate Berry, and I do need to return someday.
Hadn’t been near Portillo, but have been down to San Lorenzo. Hope as long as your there, you would have ventured far south!
We had the same issue with the lift being down after Train Tunnel Couloir. Winds picked up as we were approaching and it went on hold. Only problem was we weren’t so lucky with hitchhiking… we hiked almost all the switchbacks with our thumb out and no one picked us up. Once we started holding out some pesos a car stopped immediately. Money is a language understood in all cultures!
That’s rough, but hey, at least you got a ride!
@ A ride and a story!
I need this on my list!!
Hot 🔥 red peppers!😊 THANKS CODY!
What a sweet hotel will have to try and visit someday
Can’t wait!
brilliant
Davenport 👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you used Chilean music the whole time!
If the adventure quotient is lacking (for Cody but not for mortals) add the travel to get there, plus the babysitting and I think you hit the number!
Thanks for the great video, team! Cody, what month would you recommend visiting Portillo for a ski trip? Know it can be hit n miss so trying to get idea best chance for good conditions.
Wow! Longing to be an international ski jet-setting about now.
50 classics descents of SA, go ski the ramp in castillo!
your editor fucking crushed this one! Cody's comedic tones rarely miss
Cody - you’re a legend! Check out the Shooting Star Couloir off James Peak in the CO Front Range!
Doesn't look too tempting for my taste!
I don't care if its overplayed, the wes anderson bit was amazing
Nailed the wes
Looks like it was Chili in the lake. Or was the lake just in Chili? Way to go, Cody and Elyse! Keep this up and you’ll pull me out of my depression over the ending of the 50project.
This is one I’d like to try
We love the actual crux was finding a sitter😅
The spelunking interlude was unexpected! :D
God, I love Elyse 😂
Hey, me too.
Your kid is so cute!
