    I guess now that Pip and the “slow boat to Melbourne” have arrived I can go back to paying more attention to the race. I really really enjoyed Pip’s updates and her incredible fortitude and spirt. Than for making these updates for watching with my morning coffee over here in the US.

    Love your coverage! Do you think you could do a segment to explain how the autopilot works? It takes a lot of confidence in them

      It's complex! But I'll try and find time to give it a shot. I talked with Charlie Dalin a bit about it last year, so can dig out my voice notes.

    The hull speed of a 60-foot sailboat is approximately 10.9 knots, calculated using the formula: hull speed = 1.34 x square root of the waterline length in feet.
    Yep, the speed limit of a 60 foot hull is 11 knots.
    Hull speed is the speed at which a vessel with a displacement hull must travel for its waterline to be equal to its bow wave's wavelength. A displacement hull travels through water, instead of on top of it
    When the wavelength meets the waterline length (that's also when the bow wave's first and second crests are at opposite tips of the waterline), the boat is said to be traveling at hull speed.
    To cut to the chase scene, without the appendages that LIFT the boat in certain conditions, everyone would be going at 11 Knots.
    As it is, the leaders continue to be the fastest boats ever, in total. The lead boat is almost FOUR DAYS sailing ahead of the previous record.
    If the boys are able to make an average of 16 knots an hour, they will finish in 16 days. 16+48.5 results in a crushed Vendee record of 64.5 days. That would be a ten day improvement on the current record.
    It is roughly 500 NM to Rio de Janeiro.

    Rounding Cape Horn is a misnomer in this case because it is reserved for the upwind passage. West to East was called "Downhill".

    This is my favorite wrap-up; thanks for that. One small question: please stop mentioning that good old Le Cam is sailing a daggerboard-boat; we know that by now I think (and he built it brand-new ffs)

    • @Sail-World
      @Sail-World  18 дней назад +2

      I think it is important to make this distinction

    • @stevencito1000
      @stevencito1000 18 дней назад +1

      @ I think that’s arbitrary. All top teams and top sailors have boats with foils. Jean can be brilliant, but he gambled the wrong side, going down the atlantic. So imho there is no comparrison anymore.
      There ís now between no. 1-3 going upwind, because designwise there csn be a trade-off between up- and downwindpeeformance. And number 3 has no foil or dagger on one side, so that’s also very interesting to compare his polars on that side up- and downwind.
      Sorry, just my thoughts, and as said, keep the excellent work, thanks!

    I thought Carlies boat had an advantage upwind.... but i was wrong

      I thought the same, and it's quite possible he has. I think he may have an issue he's not telling us about.

    Charlie Dalin clearly has a problem and Yoann is taking advantage...

      That's my guess, but he's keeping very tight-lipped about it!
