Worked great, thanks. I had a problem where I couldn't get the Windows ISO to load correctly, no matter what I did. So, I went to a Windows machine and used the Media Creation Tool to make the bootable Windows USB drive and it worked fine.

    I have three questions:
    1. When downloading the linux distro iso, shall I download the exact same distro I have (for example linux mint lmde4) ?
    2. I have MSI laptop, so where do I get this boot option that easily shows for hp?
    3. My usb is recognized as: /dev/sda1 so shall I remove the number 1 just like you did?

      1. No, any should do it since gparted is just frontend to parted and fdisk, but some distros include it on the iso.
      2. Generally by pressing f2, esc or f12, depends on machine.
      3. Why is it sda1 (these are generally your main drive boot partition), but yes

Bro boot repair worked but in the end it's written an error occured during this repair , boot files of linux mint are far from the start of the disk your bios may not detect them , you may want to retry after creating a boot partition ext4 start of the disk this can be performed via tool such as gparted then select this partition via the separate boot partition option of boot repair

You need to boot from the flash drive. You need to press a function or other special key (Del, Esc, F10, F2, etc..) to enter bios as soon as systen is power on. Generally the choice is briefly flashed on screen when the computer powers on.
Enter BIOS/ UEFI setup, turn off secure boot, enable boot from usb option, save settings, restart.
Press some function key again to display boot menu (F9, F12, etc...) to display boot menu, boot from usb, install windows and turn on secure boot again. The function keys are different on different make and model of computers, the required key is generally displayed when system boots.
If still not booting then try "Enable legacy boot" option then try again.

I don't get what you did with the first DD command. Looks like you copied the .iso files from sdb1 to sdb. Why?

    • @TechSolvePrac
      @TechSolvePrac  3 года назад +1

dd command is used to make bootable flash drive by writing content of iso file to usb drive. Generally, sda is Hard Disk of your PC. sdb is any external disk (usb or second hdd) attache to PC. In our case it is usb. The numbers in the end 1,2,3,etc are the partitions on the USB drive. While making a drive bootable we don't need existing partitions so we ignore the last digits and use complete USB drive upto /dev/sdb only.

@@TechSolvePrac: I've gotten as far as the first installation screen (languages, etc). Apparently there's a problem using USB 3.0 devices such as my kbd & trackball, which become dead at that point.
So far the only patch I see is for people who already run Windows (e.g. XP). However, I may be able to twiddle my BIOS to not set up USB3 just during the setup. Or maybe plug a kbd into a USB2 slot?
This is so much work at this point I may soon give up, or maybe Win10 is less hassle after all, though it has stuff I don't want cluttering my system. All this hassle reminds me why I dumped MS products to begin with!
      Stay tuned!
