    Two findings from a very long evening adjusting a choir take:
    - You absolutely should activate the spectral peaks. It is so much easier to adjust visually. You can discern "ts" and "m" sounds that should be placed before and not on the beat, you can fix different timing for vowel adjustments, etc.
    - Especially if the tracks you are adjusting are from different sources, the "dynamic split" automation often does not exactly set the right amount of transient at convenient places. Thus you might find yourself constantly both (a) adding new stretch markers, which means you have to ungroup the items to not add them in all items AND (b) manually delete a lot of stretch markers you do not want to use. Instead, use the dynamic split menu to add "transient guides" (and of course Kenny Goia has a great video on those as well) and do not use the grouping feature. I found this to be a much faster way to handle tracks that are not as clean as you would like them to be.

    • @Sn00ky128
      @Sn00ky128 3 года назад +4

      These are good tips aswell, thank you! Last year i had the interesting task to adjust around 50 tracks from my choir, all recorded with their respective smartphone at home. It was a nightmare! In the end it took me around 30 hours to do so, because i was mainly relying on my ears to synchronize them all. If i knew this grouping trick and the option of having spectral peaks then, it would've saved a lot of time! :D

  • @banigrisson
    @banigrisson 3 года назад +83

    Pro-tip: do it with spectral peaks activated. The visual feedback is seriously better that way, and less "listens" are needed to get it right.

  • @thedrunkmonkshow

    Just discovered this feature for the first time now and I'm blown away. I would spend hours and sometimes days doing all this crap by hand one at a time fixing people's timing issues with choruses or adlibs in rap stacks the best I could but sometimes the audio stretching would sound unnatural or have gaps or obvious fades. This sounded much more clean and convincing to where now I'll have to think twice about which DAW I use or reach for prior to a recording session to ensure it has this capability. I'll admit sometimes Reaper feels cluttered and confusing by the wealth of options it has but with that flexibility and customization creates ideal solutions for scenarios that many other DAWs overlooked or never considered. 😃

    daaaaaaaannnnngggg lol..and I just bought vocalign ultra!! even though I have it this makes me feel like I have more control because sometimes the background vocals for rappers dont line up when done with vocalign. For example when the artist only does emphasis words instead a full take in the back, vocalign doesn't know how to catch those spaced out words and align them to the original..Now I may just have to make this my permanent daw. I just need to learn it in and for hip hop production because the tools I need are hard to find within reaper for making beats. Thanks Kenny for everything. Dont know how you know all this stuff about reaper but im glad you do lol

  • @JonHarris77
    @JonHarris77 3 года назад

    Personally, I think it would be faster to drop the stretch markers in manually (with a keyboard shortcut or mouse modifier) than using dynamic split on transients. If you have to go through and look at/adjust/delete/add each one individually anyway, why not just drop them in as you go instead. I guess if you could find a dynamic split setting that got you really close it could help.
    The grouping/grabbing trick is amazing though! I mixed a virtual choir recently that needed a lot of alignment work, and that would have been a big time saver. (On the other hand, some imperfections are actually very good in choral music to make it sound natural and full, but you do want to take care of those 's' sounds and the one guy who held the note a beat too long.)
    Thanks for another great vid!
