To be honest this isn't a generational problem, it's a US problem.
The problem is many in this generation (my own) will consider themselves educated and their beliefs absolute but will be lacking the same basic knowledge these people do. It would take anyone less than a day of studying a map on the internet to be able to point out the majority of the countries in the world. Seems my generation prefers the idea of education over actually seeking it out.

I'm 60 yrs. old, and geography was a favorite subject in school back in the 1970's... I continued my interest in geography long after school having a nice globe & maps in my home office (long before the invention of home computers & cell phones... Today, I am still very interested in geography and proud to say I know most every country & location on the map... I messed up with a few small countries of Eastern Europe near Western Russia, and some of the small countries in Central Africa, but I memorized all of North & South Africa.
