In those days a programmer had to be really good. No APIs, no engines, no object languages. Respect.
Bob askins A lot of Math, patience, creativity and talent.
And the result had to be perfect. No way of patching bugs.
Also no stackoverflow 🤯
Music is also very limited
@@theMagos Patches are just an excuse to release a shoddy or unfinished product.
Never stop making videos you magnificent bastards
Haha thanks! Maybe I should rename my channel in the magnificent bastards, sounds cool ;)
Really great content
@@strafefox dooooooo it you'll spark way more attention with the name alone lol the quality is the hidden surprise that follows
@@strafefox Strafefox, you magnificent bastard, I read your book!
I really love the touch of the outro with the quotes and song, a tribute to the romanticism that got game developers into that profession and persevere through the grueling process of videogame making.
The meticulous work and creativity that went into these early games is staggering.
And once again, I say that these limitations bred the GREATEST games of all time. Especially in terms of musical creativity.
Not that modern game making is easy, but it certainly has a lot less restrictions, and now we have a generally homogenized and less interesting gaming industry. This is why I love indie devs. They keep it creative.
music was more catchy back then
@@JanG859 Because it had to be the star! Gaming music needed to carry the majority weight of the audio experience. They couldn't lean on voice acting like now. So there was more care in the musical composition (when care was there to be given).
I don’t understand why it took so long for RUclips to recommend this channel to me. I love retro games and watch a lot of videos about it, I’m a developer so I often watch programming and project management videos, and I love the music you use in your videos, I’ve listened to some of them theough RUclips way before I heard them in your video. And, your content is in its own league in terms of quality.
Keep up the awesome work! 🙂
Still one of the finest retrogaming channels! Thank you!
Thanks so much! :)
I dont understand how this channel doesnt have millions of subscribers, this content is amazing!
This is so incredibly well made. How come this doesn't have 100x the views at least!?
Such an amazing channel. I love the work and research you all put in, as well as the incredible presentation.
The vaporwave aesthetic is also a fantastic touch to these videos that really hits home the nostalgic mood and tone of the content.
I wish more people were watching these, I'm going to post this everywhere.
That ending with the old school game devs and the muisic, almost make me cry, i feel it like see a past time that mostly is forgotten, simple magnificent.
Robert Parker - "85 again" (Vhs Glitch remix) at the end was perfect! Thank you so much!
Thanks! and yeah I agree the song worked nicely at the end.
Amazing video. As an electrical engineering student it's really awersome to see a video telling more about the hardware. Your videos are doing a really important job preserving the lost art of video game making. Keep up the good work!
Couldn’t agree more. Crafting games that could move us emotionally, within the limitations of hardware of the time, was hard work. The stories of the people who made it possible deserves to be told, this channel is doing just that.
finding this channel gives me faith in the internet again.
Excellent video, enjoyed it very much. Those production values are through the roof, and the ending song gave me goosebumps for some reason! :)
Thanks! and yeah I love 80's styled music :)
This is the final frontier of the grid for all those retro gaming systems, this dude here talks about the entire set, I feel like this is relating from electronical component to like selling point, lol woah.... truly a real breakthrough of teaching video game memory electronics to the people. I give this series two big thumbs up!!
That outro was a very nice touch.
Not gonna lie had to pause the video to go listen to that tune from Mega Man 8 again. I love that Frost Man theme.
The production values of these videos are amazing.
That was awesome to see all the behind-the-scenes clips from employees
This series captures the love I have for video games.
Sonic Spinball was not developed in C++, it was developed in C. C compiles/translates much closer to assembly than C++.
Yeah I found it rather odd to hearing it, I don't think C++ was not even a thing back in 95/96 (which was a good thing... after C++ came around and started being teached in universities it just doesn't have the same agility and leads to over-engineering programmers)
@@FeelingShred c++ actually came out in the 1980s. However original m is right in that c is third lowest level language out there.
@@ryanoconnor5176 Third? What are the others? Assembly is first, right? (but I guess Assembly doesn't count because it varies from chip to chip?) So what are the other 2?
@@ryanoconnor5176 It's very interesting that history is remembered from people like you, so folks like me are not taught the re-written version of history.
I can always remember about the story of John Carmack choosing to try C++ for the development of Doom 3 merely because all of the market was using it, but he came out later saying it was definitely not conducive to better productivity or net gains, compared to all the promises.
@@FeelingShred it goes Machine code/binary-> Assembly -> C -> C++
Your work is pure perfection! greetings from Brazil!
Thanks so much! And greetings from Holland! :)
I wish more brasilians could understand english so i would flood them with this content...mainly my friends!
but unfortunatelly, most of them dont =(
Best thing video game has done for me was to force me to learn english!
Brasil é foda! (Brasil is a strugle ! )
Ah pimenta seu safado

Really makes me appreciate how these games are created, fantastic video! :)
Such a underrated channel. Always a blast seeing a new video in my subbox!
This channel has some of the best visual presentations and the most relevant and accurately researched info crammed into an amazing experience. How are you guys only about 9000 subscribers! You guys have real talent, and I always look forward to your videos. The fact that you actually explained sound channels for both the Genesis and SNES were great! People to this day still don't consider the sound capabilities of the Genesis and I wish they saw your channel!
Yeah I should really hire someone to market my channel, because I suck at that! :) and thanks for the kind words!
The quality of the episodes on this channel is awesome. You sir, are majestic!
Superb video as always
thanks!
the ending of the video with the quotes made me tear up,
these workers made my child days really really fun with my friends! :)
i still love this era of gaming too, too many really really good games now and all, but sometimes it has so much negativity, 16 bit era was just always fun, always
That was some INCREDIBLE explanation of how game devs struggled in the past. Wonderful job, guys
This is my favorite channel on RUclips. I wish you great success. The talent and effort in your work shines through. You are amazing!!!
High quality content is nothing compared to your videos! Just breathtaking!
Great to see your wonderfully retro content back in action~
Thanks! I'm planning to release more videos this year compared to last year.
Dude! So glad to see you making videos! Splash wave needs to become huge!

Great content! As a digital project designer and manager I really enjoy watching how the teams managed to deliver great games back then.
Big thanks for this precious video!
Amazing again. Btw Jeroen Tel was and still is a musical magician.
Top quality. Lot of that early work was tedious but you can see the care and attention they put into each level and element. Great video. Thank you!
This is gold for any aspiring indie dev! Buen trabajo sin duda.
Man what a fantastic video and channel. Crisp editing, perfect music, and really interesting transitions. Subbed immediately!
Ah, such a nice surprise for a slow Sunday. Great work as always!
Thanks man! :)
I'm not usually one to say this, but you deserve so much more subscribers. The production value of your videos is superb and everything is presented in a very appealing way. Thank you for the videos and keep up the good work!
This channel is incredible! The production and attention to detail in each video is unbelievable.
Man I'm lost for words, this video is a masterpiece. Congrats!
Another amazing video! Really fascinating stuff and an amazing amount of 3D animation. I also love the pot shots you take at the SNES from time to time... 😈
Great stuff! Keep em coming!
Haha don't get me wrong I love the SNES (my favorite Nintendo console), but hey... I love the Mega-Drive even more ;)
and thanks!
Great video, and looking at Gunstar Heroes concept art is inspiring.
It really sunk in how tough a game devs job was when you said “they usually had to program in assembly”. Holy Hell!!!
Game deva deserve so much better than the treatment they get, especially today where they’re still so often exploited and sleeping under their desks if they sleep at all to push a game release.
I'm learning so much, thanks guys!
Great to hear! and thanks for watching
exelent quality videos! keep it up!
Thanks!
I really want that sega digitizer into my possesion haha.
Best retro channel. Hope to see 32X & Mega CD videos.
amazing videos, the whole of this series is fantastic
Damn, great video and again I love the way the video ends with the additional quotes, gameplay, and music. It just fits so well.
THE CHANNEL DIES IN A WEEK (allegedly)
Damn. Here we are again. This morning I woke up to a dozen old copyright claims being filed. As a result, having 3+ copyright strikes has my channel marked for deletion in a week. I'm waiting on responses from folks right now to try and get this resolved, but honestly I'm less than hopeful. As if I needed more reasons to stay away from RUclips, right? I'm going to lose everything if this channel goes away, but I'm sure as hell not going to lose this incredible audience and community I've created over these last 3 years - some of the best years of my life. I owe all of this to all of you, the folks who keep coming back just to see what I've been up to, or message me encouraging things when I'm not feeling 100%. I love you all, each and every one of you. Well, everyone but Phil. Sorry, Phil.
My god, the editing of this video is superb. Amazing job, strafefox.
Thanks! :)
So, that's what Jeroen Tel looks like. Awesome composer! :)
Have been waiting for this, great sequel to the first part
I love the quotes at the end. there's a real sense of enthusiasm in some of them!
The amount of work you put in your videos is astounding! I don't think I've seen anyone else on RUclips make game videos with this level of research, presentation and polish, perhaps with the exception of "My Gaming Life" channel, but your 3D and compositing work is still superior. Bravo.
I absolutely love this to bits. Thank you for such detailed explanation of the process for making these games.
Thanks so much! That's awesome to hear.
Btw: if you are interested; my other making of videos go into further detail about various processes :)
@@strafefox I'm slowly but steadely going through your whole library, thank you!
I do have a request for one of my favorite games from the MegaDrive please: Dynamite Headdy. I feel like that must have been an insane amount of work to develop.
This was truly fantastic! Please continue to keep the bar high.
the ending was so epic!.. congratulation for your videos!.. keep the good work always..
Great stuff, brilliantly presented and highly accurate, nice to see a few friends of mine in there from EU and JP!! - It really was a great time to be making games
Thanks! and great to hear my research and assumptions are accurate :) and yeah I can totally imagine that it must have been a great and dynamic time to work in the games industry!
Best video series on RUclips
Fantastic... that brought back some memories of a mis-spent youth I can tell ya :-) I loved working direct in machine code on the 6502 and Z80 cpu's squeezing every last ounce of raw power from it that I could, then I turned it into a living, and now I spend my days wrapping different coloured make-up around databases :-( I really should get back into this stuff one day, maybe even start teaching some of these techniques.
Great video! I missed the first part but gotta go back and check it out
Wonderful job! Exhilarating background info... it was very interesting to learn about it!
Am speachless.
Live was freaking damn hard back then, we really should thank those peoples, offering their, time, hearth and mind to make all these games.
These videos are very high quality. Nicely done. I hope you keep making more. They're great!
Wow, this series is GREAT! Your editing skills are out of this world, man. Awesome job, brotha! #strafefox
As I get older I appreciate these classic even more.
Game today are great, but sometimes they lose the freedom of a creative mind 🌀
I just love these kind of videos! It's really difficult to find a video with such good quality like this. Τhank you.
Fantastic content as always. It's always a pleasure to sit and watch your videos :)
Excellent! Great content, nice graphics and soundtrack!
Yet another great video.. Well worthed the long wait. Cheers!
Awesome video as always! Superb work and keep them coming :)
Another great video. Love the series and the channel
Awesome videos as usual. The best B roll of gaming on youtube! And thanks for featuring so many genesis games.
wow! The production value is amazing! your material keeps getting better :)
This is some high quality content!
Amazing video guys! Every one of your videos are a treasure trove of great information and stellar editing!
Thanks so much!
always love a good strafefox upload, always worth the wait honestly
Great video, just a slight correction: Sonic Pinball was not programmed in C++ (which would have been even more impractical), but in C
That's right. C++ was commonly used in the early 3D-days, all N64 games for example were programmed at least in parts in C/C++.
Stumbled across this channel yesterday and had a real video binge fest.
I hope you get the subscribers you deserve! awesome work
Very informative video , thank you .
I bet G4 TV would pay to have all these highly produced videos on their network... It'd be the best thing on Television about video games. I could easily see all these videos on network television.
So that's how the sprites were drawn.I always wanted to know how they did it.Fascinating video.
Very precise work, as well as so inspiring and entertaining. Excellent! Kudos man!
Thanks man! :)
Love this kind of stuff!
That's so fucking good!!!! I am so happy I've found this channel
Thanks so much! :)
always worth the wait
Extremely well done and very informative, even for people who know about this stuff.
This is beautiful. Subscribed.
I had forgotten I was subscribed to you. Now I remember why I was. Great stuff.
I thumbed up since the 2nd second as I was so excited to watch it ! And never disappointed ! You're the master ! ;)
Haha thanks so much!
Very fascinating
Great work dude !!!
that was amazing, great job.
"Most games were coded in assembly."
The respect I have now for these programmers is imesurable.
Great video, can't wait for the next one! =)
Great video! Thanks!
