  • To the backdrop of an emotional tribute to Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, both of whom lost their lives at Imola in 1994, the Gran Premio del Made In Italy e dell 'Emilia-Romagna produced a grandstand finish, with Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen crossing the line only 0.7sec ahead of McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris. Verstappen had led from the pole and on medium Pirellis looked to be in charge. On the harder Pirellis, however, and as a result of the set-up changes made by the team on Friday night, Verstappen had much less room with which to manage tyre deg as the race neared its close. And Norris - his McLaren obviously at home on the white-sidewall tyres - came right back into the frame. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished third, while Oscar Piastri, who started with a three-place grid penalty, finished fourth, ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and the two Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. In this video Peter Windsor analyses the key elements of the race.

      Even Peter's analysis can't justify Lando overtaking Max. In overall race time Max won by 0.800 seconds. As Lando & Max knew that Lando could not pass him, Max paced himself to make sure the tires lasted to the end of the race. Who says Lando's tires would have lasted another lap at the pace Lando was going?

    This race really highlighted the difference between Max and everyone else on the grid. The uncanny way he can drive on the absolute limit of what his machinery can do, while making exactly zero mistakes is what makes him almost un-human-like. Lando did a fantastic job, but it was so interesting to see him have a couple of moments (not crumbling under pressure, just a couple of slightly shaky moments) when he got close enough, even though he didn't really have anything to lose. Max on the other hand drove a perfect last 12 or so laps with worse tyres, trying to add pace while still under threat from the possibility of a time penalty as well. And Max had everything to lose in this scenario. But with the weight of the whole world on his shoulders, he still managed to go into this 6th gear only he seems to have, while still keeping it mistake-free. Truly generational.

    Meh, i really didnt see anything from Lando to make me agree with his statement that hed have won in another one or two laps. Sure, Max was working with low battery and bad tyres, but he still stayed out of DRS range with his superior skill, and the reaspn the gap was under a second was because Max was letting off during the final lap. Catching up to Max enough to SEE him isnt nearly the same thing as actually PASSING him. Despite not needing to, generally speaking, the last few seasons he still knows perfectly well how to defend his position and place his car exactly where it needs to be to prevent an overtake. MOST likely, Lando (who WAS driving a fantastic race) would have been forced into making a very bad decision and ruining his race if he ended up wheel to wheel with the Dutch deity...as Max would have forced him into trying to overtake at points that are really not advised to attempt and Lando most likely would have attempted it in effort to outdo Max and fucked his car into the gravel or something. I mean Lando is driving extremely well and that McLaren looks to be stamped in as the 2nd best car, likely much closer or perhaps even a bit better than the RB20 but lacking Max in the driver seat...but thats still quite different than saying hed definitely have passed Max, especially considering Lando was on old tyres as well and Max would absolutely have not only defending fiercely but also putting the hammer down. Still a very nice result. No shame for Lando with that result.

    While some content creators have been saying that Perez' results justifies his seat - this race was the example of all previous seasons with Perez. Perez always gets lucky with a few P2's or a race win, but when it counts, he just can't perform. He doesn't perform when he needs to. Especially with both McLaren and Ferarri collecting huge numbers of points, Perez is failing hard.
    I'd say that if Max wasn't there, Red Bull would be P3 now in the constructor's leaderboard. If Perez isn't collecting podiums until the Summer break, I wouldn't even bother giving him another contract. Red Bull's competitors are just too good and too close. Let's not forget that Aston Martin gathered a lot of points at the start of previous year and then dropped back. Now, those points are going to Ferarri and McLaren.

Lando doesn't seem to over cook the tires early (staring at you Piastri, although with doing the undercut it was justified in this situation.) Being in front at Imola is almost like Monaco unless you are completely broken, you aren't going to have much trouble holding somebody up in a competitive car.

      what i think happened, is 2 choices. 1 norris lied. and actually did had the pace, but basically tried to drive same speed as ferrari and verstappen to save tires, then got the go from the team to go full out because the tires could handle it. we saw this at miami as well when norris drove away from verstappen pretty easily on the hardtires. on the mediams norris and verstappen had the same speed in miami. difference was the hard tires. or choice 2. they have a party mode in that mc laren and are cheating :) but anyway fact is. the mc laren rules on the hard tires, that is what sets the difference between the mclaren en the redbulls at the moment i wonder how this happens. i do not think this is a coincidence.

    Of course people tried to use the tow thing to tarnish Max's pole. That's the theme of F1 in 2024. Attack, downplay, and repeatedly announce the imminent downfall of Red Bull and Max Verstappen. His historic performance in 2023 made a lot of people upset, hence the relentless booing he gets at American and European tracks, the barrage of 'Red Bull is falling apart' articles on F1 news sites and RUclips channels, the Max to Mercedes trolling from Toto Wolff, the dominos are falling snipes from Zac Brown, the total absence of Driver of the Day votes no matter how well he races, I mean it's relentless.
    Ron Dennis was talking about this today on the BBC. We all want more competitive racing, but the mean-spirited way people are acting this year has really disappointed me. I don't recall this happening to such a degree to Mercedes during their seven years of domination. When I went to the race in Melbourne, the crowd booed Max every time he drove past and erupted into ecstatic cheering when he DNF'd. I wish people in the west had the sort of respect for drivers that fans seem to have in places like Japan. And I don't even read Twitter, god knows how toxic opinions are on there. People love to hate.

    Driver of the day Lando, who didn't win the GP in the fastest car. Same as last race where he almost lost the GP in the fastest car, but a perfectly timed safety car saved him there. Mclaren should really maximise the weekends when they have the fastest car. Despite the hype they are making too many mistakes still. Not saying Lando isn't a great driver.

      sorry mate but the red bull was clearly the fastest car, especially on the mediums. norris just didnt push the tyres as hard until the last 10 laps and the mclaren’s degradation was far better anyway. also, verstappen could have won miami if he wouldn’t have made that mistake which cost him about 2 tenths a lap. discrediting norris just because he took advantage of others being in tough situations is hilarious.

      I don't get the hatred of Lando. All he has ever done is thoroughly dominate every other driver in equal equipment (most of the time the McLaren he has been given is a bottom of the top 10 car). Suddenly the McLaren is a legit podium contender and now Lando is somehow pathetic or somehow less talented for not winning? News flash unless you were about 1.5 sec a lap faster you weren't going to make a pass today (Imola). In Miami, Lando was on pace (was repeatedly doing fastest laps before his stop, I believe he over cuts Sainze and Piastri without much trouble) for no worse than 2nd and likely would've played out much the same with a hard charging Lando running down Max.

      @Stantube1000 22 дня назад +3

      @@user-uc1ny1ns2o Norris wasn't fast enough on medium because they had a very wrong setup to start the race with. He said he would've taken 4 clicks off the front wing, if he had a chance to start the race again.
      This is huge, his balance was way off, and Piastri looked faster, but couldn't show Mclaren pace behind slower Sainz. Lando literally said on the top 3 press conference, they didn't do good enough job on the 1st stint. It wasn't Max who was fast, it was Lando who was slow, way slower than what the car was capable of.
      As soon as they corrected Lando front wing level on the pit stop and Lando adapted, he was the fastest car on track by far, having the same advantage as in Miami.
      Verstappen won a race in the 3rd fastest car.

    Let's put it this way. RBR had the single worst weekend it has had - it's car's performance was far from peak performance with bad setup. They were 3-4 tenths faster on the M tire, but the hard tire was awful. Everyone had more tire deg than they anticipted. Mcl on the other hand had about the best weekend they could have hoped and still could not beat Max (or secure pole) when the RB20 was maybe the 3rd fastest car this weekend. That is where the driver factor comes in, and it matters. The last few laps, Max, while driving like on ice was able to pull the gap where he needed and Nor nearly went off in the gravel a few times cracking a bit under the pressure.

      Red Bull still have the fastest car - its just nonsense to suggest they dont. But they are now being pushed to get everything out of it, there is no comfort zone anymore. They didnt mess up set up, they just had to push the envelope - just like in Miami

    • @virgilma6153
      @virgilma6153 22 дня назад +2

      @@mutleyenghow can you say they were the fastest when the practice sessions were bad, had less tire information and McClaren gaining 6 seconds in the last 10 laps of the FINAL stint and pulling away from Ferrari like it was nothing. The win factor = Max. U blind if u can’t see it.

    • @996C4cab
      @996C4cab 21 день назад

      @@mutleyeng I disagree. They may still have the fastest car at peak performance, but they were far, far from peak performance this weekend. All of the data, short and long runs proved they had only the 3rd fastest car this weekend. The difference was the driver, nothing more, nothing less. Max had a great first stint on the M tire, but was awful on the H and was on ice the last 15 laps. Nor had the opposite and when it counted Max in a slower car was spot on whereas Nor nearly went off multiple times. Let's not forget, in China Max was 1-1.2 seconds per lap ahead of everyone. I'm not saying Mcl hasnt found some pace, but this is more of a case of RBR not running optimally, and thus slower making it look closer than it is. Once RBR get the setup right, they will take a good step forward too. This weekend could not have gone any better for Mcl and RBR had the single worst weekend they could have asked for and look at the results.
