Do you need to set the timing and install cam locking tools before you take the cylinder head off.

- In this video I explain that you do NOT need to install the cam locking tools before you take the cylinder head apart on a Volvo with VVT hubs, etc. This applies to all of the white block Volvo's built from 1991 through 2013. 960, S70, 850, XC70, V70R, XC90, V50, V60, S60, S80, S40, V40, etc.

Thank you for your awesome and helpful content! Started with an 850 N/A 5 speed car. Then I bought an 850 turbo as a parts car for it. Today I bought a 850R (16t, injectors, tune) that has a destroyed subframe and some bent and broken suspension parts! With a little bit of help from your videos, the parts car, and some elbow greese I think I can make a decent daily driver 850R for under $1250 TOTAL! Your videos are priceless!
Very nice. 💪🏾👊🏾
Update. 850r is running and driving with a new subframe. Started parting out the parts car. Made back about 1k. Into the pair for about $350.
You can also mark the position of the VVT hub and the other hub on the cam shafts themselves using a scribe tool or marker and then back out all three screws completely before removing the timing belt, and then gently tap the hubs off the shafts before removing the cam cover. Makes it easy to remove the cover and cam shafts.
Interesting.
Thank you Mr Robert for the video
You are welcome.
As always very helpfull.Youre the best.Greetings from Greece.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you Robert! Lol I feel like you made this video because of my annoying questions 😂
No, another guy emailed me. LOL
The engine shop at Volvo sets the crank to the timing mark on the block, installs the lifters, and lays the cam shafts in place using the notches on the end of the intake and exhaust camshafts aligned with the seam between the head and cam cover, then they install the cam seals, then the cam locking tool into the two shafts, then lays down the cam cover and dogs it down, and then installs the VVT hubs, then the cam sprockets to the timing marks on the plastic cover, then they install the timing belt, and give the crank several turns to make sure every thing turns freely. They then give the crank a quarter turn counter clockwise to untension the springs within the VVT hubs, and then do the final positioning of the belt and hubs, then give the crank another two or three clockwise turns, then they install the camshaft position sensors and VVT solenoids,, then mount the engine into the frame. It's really a very simple and genius design because you really have to work hard to do it incorrectly.

Tank you, Robert, for the videos! I recently bought me a 960, very helpful!
Glad to help
can u do a video on how to set the cam shafts

I don't understand your question. Not sure what kind of vehicle/engine you are working with. Don't know what job you are trying to complete. I have probably 20 timing related videos.
@@RobertDIY i am working on a 2004 volvo s40 2.4i with a 5 cylinder engine i’m trying to set the cams bc i just did the head gasket
What if i roll the cam wheel backwards? Ps...thank you for everything you do. Your my goto guy for our volvo.
Why would you do that 🤔
Well, I was trying to line them up to install the tool, and because I do dumb shtt sometimes, I rolled it counter clockwise.
Think u for the video
You are welcome

Thanks for watching.
In some engines, like Toyota's they have an inline filter in the block of the engine that filters out the oil going to the VVT's. Do Volvo's have anything similar to this????
Great info!!!
Yes. Under the solenoid.

Hey Robert I'm having a problem with my 5 cylinder Volvo. My serpentine belt keeps getting under my timing belt cover & screwing up the timing. It's the second time I'm having to fix this & it's got less than 100,000 miles on it. Is there any way to prevent it from happening again? Like a timing cover seal or anything to prevent the serpentine belt from wrapping under my crankshaft gears.
Fix what is causing the belt to jump the pulley.
@@RobertDIY Could that be caused by a bad pulley or tensioner? I just bought a broken S60 with the same issue (valves are shot), but figured I should replace ALL the pulleys and tensioners while I'm in there.
Is this for head gaskets
most head jobs or anytime the cam cover is removed.
I took the cam gears off the out the camshaft I put in new head and cams in this engine I need to know where the cam gear set at for timing that is my question for you today please respond I would appreciate it thank you
I don't even know what kind of car you have.
Hi robert, ive got a 2003 s60 2.4t , i fixed all the sespension/ waterpump belts and lot of other things on my car .
Last thing i had to do is changing the spark plugs, so i bought the plugs and changed them but i stripped the threads of 2 cylinders in cylinderhead. .. i found out last mechanic put the wrong spark plugs in ( long ones) so thats the reason why😢. 1 of the stripped threads was already repaired with a coil. Not my lucky day aparently. What should i do ?
Pull the head and let a machine shop fix it?
Ouch, ouch, ouch! I would probably replace the head with a rebuilt one.
Here my question i have a 2002 v40 1.9 waterpump is leaking im doing timing belt while im there i am using the cam locks is it a must i put everything in time first since im just doing it bc waterpump is down not bc of timing problem ? Thanks in advance
I almost never use a locking tool.
@@RobertDIY oh ok
Very good to know! I'm planning on replacing all the spark plug tube seals in Jody, since 4/5 of the seals are leaking oil on top of the plugs/coil boots. Thankfully, the piston rings are still good after nearly 300K miles! Still got very good compression across the board (195-199 PSI), and the spark plugs were bone dry with only normal wear while replacing them a couple weeks back. 🦾
Are you sure they are leaking? Not the PCV or oil cap?
@@RobertDIY Oh, yes; I’ve beaten that to death 😂 It’s only oily under the ignition coils, and above the spark plugs-it’s bone dry everywhere else
Do you have any information or heads up for the new SPA cars?
No sir.
@@RobertDIY all good. I'm in the deciding moments of if I'm going to buy some Polestar cams for my car but I know the install process is gonna be weird, and/or require a bunch of specialized tools.
Hi Robert, is it necessary to lock the crank shaft after the cams have been removed?
Not usually. Just make sure it is back on the mark before you align the cams.
Is there a special tool you use to replace the valve stem seals on the RN engines when replacing them with the head still installed.

Ok

Hi Robert, I need your advice. I have a 2009 Volvo S40 with an issue similar to what you were describing as far as the serpentine belt getting sucked into the cam. What is the best approach to fixing and getting my car back on the road.??
Did it jump time? If you can remove the busted belt, and start the car, and the car run smooth, just fix what caused the belt to come apart and install a new belt and press on with life. If it make the engine jump time, you can put it back in time and see if it bent valves. If valves were bent it will miss fire because it can't build compression, which is needed for the cylinder to fire, you will need to replace the valves or cylinder head.
