  • Inside Bangkok's Largest Slum
    From my previous video on Ong Ang Walking Street, I claimed that some of the residential buildings looked like slums until I saw on the comments telling me to venture into Bangkok's Largest Slum, the Khlong Toey Slum, located south of the expressway and north of the port, is the largest and oldest slum of Bangkok. It houses over 100,000 residents on about one square mile of land owned by the Port Authority.

    I would argue that these are not “slums”. This is another neighborhood and people do what they can to live life and enjoy. I’m not sure what the fascination is with some travelers to these countries to go into the “slums“. There are a lot of people who are considered “poor” who are extremely happy with their lives, and tons of people who are considered “rich” who are miserable.

      Klong Tooey is a poor neighborhood. In 1980s, I saw parts of KL, with stick houses built on poles -- over sewerage floating in the water. If you imagine that people can live in poverty in filth and be happy, then your Real is not in reality. Admittedly, Lee showed built-up parts of KL -- and may have even missed areas on/near the water. But, a Thai couple living in a tiny room - sharing their booze? What else to live for?

    its fine not to know how to feel and there is not right or wrong way to feel and no one can tell you want to feel... when comes to "what to do" and "responsibility" i think its humanity responsibly to "look out for each other" not necessarily "look after each other" (love ones and family excluded) ...one does what one can or wants to do.. be it any friendliness or kindness like giving sweets to trying to support or build or improve an area in any ways that can be done - the kid at 9:00 and 14:10 is same kid 😆 enjoyed this video 👍

    Cleanliness is the key to a happy neighbourhood. Dont have to be privileged, rich and credentialed to keep a tidy living. Part of the government’s plan to flatten the slum is attributed to the residents lackadaisical attitudes. But on another note, Thai’s polarised society should be blamed too. Two sides must ponder what they can do to make lives better.

    Maybe this will make you feel better. Those people you see living in Khlong Toei slum, they're not there because they don't have a choice, THEY CHOSE TO BE THERE. The government offered them free housing in the form of low rise flats on the outskirt of Bangkok, but pretty much all of them refused. Secondly, THEY'RE NOT living below poverty line---did you not see all the new cars parked in between the alleys??, those belong to the people who lived there. A lot of them grew up well educated and have nice jobs, you asked during the video where the hell are all the kids, well guess what, most of them goes to school!! The less well to do ones make at least $10-$15 a day (minimum wages for Bangkok) Also . I know for a fact that those migrant workers (mostly Burmese) working in the Khlong Toei markets wheeling fresh produce to customer cars make at least 1,500 Bahts per day (about $50) The slum people you see are selfish and stubborn, and they choose to remain there due to its location---it is like a 5 minutes drive from there to the Asoke intersection, the heart of Bangkok.

The way Americans measure wealth is only relevant at the currency exchange rate, and that will change once the Yuan usurps the USD. I don't like when people says its a squatter or slums because people didn't just build houses illegally, they have their own title and others have rights. I've noticed this in India, Indonesia, and other Asian countries there are vloggers called it slums even though if its not. 😅

    As far as I know, Klong Toei slum is probably the oldest and largest slum in Bangkok. I heard of it since I was very young over 40 years ago. So people living there have been there for more than 40-50 years. There are many people there whose lives have changed in such a better way that they needn't to stay there anymore. A lot of them have housing somewhere else. However, most of them still choose not to give up their homes in KlongToei. This is because the location of the slum is right in the heart of Bangkok city center where jobs are located. Housing price in that area is out of reach for most people in Thailand. Definitely that people living in slums are quite poor but I think they are just about on the average of other Thais.

    I'm a little iffy about 'slum tourism'. Especially when the tourists come with cameras. That said, it does make sense to volunteer or help out the non-profits and aid organizations working towards poverty relief and creating opportunities. Specifically with Klong Toey, I definitely want to visit (the next time I'm in Bangkok) and maybe patronize some of the small businesses that the people there operate.

    The way you gave the juice box to that man who was squatting, is really bad, you pulled your hand away like he was a lepper or a sewer. If you are disgusted by those people, then don't go there. It was hard to watch. These people are the most resilient and honest, I have more respect for them than most people.

    Slum is a debatable term. I read once that the countries like the US where the population on average have the most money....live the unhappiest lives. It not what u have that makes people happy although you wouldn’t know it from watching anything on tv.

    Was this slum built by the city as low income housing or is this makeshift I can't tell

    • @lucca_lee
      @lucca_lee 2 года назад

      There are many low income housing in Bangkok all of them look like a proper place to live but nothing can compare to Klongtoey in term of "location" Klongtoey located in the middle of town it near main road and 2 stations of metro its also walking distrance to the city CBD more than just across the river there is the last green space of Bangkok. Id like to move there if the slum were gone and turn into a nice condo complex.
