The torpedoes are wire guided active/passive homing torpedoes primarily meant for killing submarines...the wire allows for 2 way communications between the ship and the torpedo so the ship can tell the torpedo where to go if its own sensors are not finding the target.
This + also since some surface vessels will be armed with a lot of air/missile defences of multiple types, or grouped to protect each other, a torpedo might be a lot slower, but also harder to defend against. The Visby class corvettes would likely find themselves fighting larger enemy ships in case of war, such as the Nastoychivy, the flaship destroyer if they ever repair it, and other frigates/corvettes/missile ships/LSTs in the russian baltic fleet.
The reason they look "futuristic" is because they are built for stealth. Both the shape and the materials it's made of (composite) is there to give them as small a radar crossection as possible (and they also have a very small IR and magnetic signature). The exact numbers on how small their radar crossections are is secret (of ourse), but they are sometimes reffered to as "ghost ships". I have read that a radar operator might easily misstake the small return signal from these corvettes as "background noise" and disregard them completely (until one of their 8 Swedish made anti ship missiles slams into it's side that is...) I have also heard their crossection being compared to that of a small buoy. They are propelled by water jets (top speed 35 knots/ 40 mph) Their small size and shallow draught (2,4 Meter/ 7.1 foot) is perfect for the enviroment they were designed to operate in, the Baltic sea and the wast Swedish archipelago.
Top speed is 35 knots, but that is 40 mph so I guess a typo?
@@joakimbarkstrom9679 Fixed it...👍😁
Since it wasn't mentioned in the video or any other comment, here's a cool fact: The fog behind the vessel is not the engine exhaust. It is water vapor intended to cool the exhaust and disguise the wake, making the ship even harder to track.
I've been wondering about that smoke, thanks!
@@kristofferhellstrom now I can't find the source of that information anymore, but I'm pretty certain that I've been told about this feature and it's not something I just dreamt :)
some of the best American weapons were actually invented by Sweden
true and real.
Some boats in the American civil war where designed by swedish engineers
Born in Michigan by Swedish parents, Clarence Leonard "Kelly" Johnson at the time made some significant contributions to the US Air Force back in the days. Most notable was the Lockheed U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird.
Great maniacs think alike, we like inventing ballshit crazy stuff, america likes using ballshit crazy stuff. "It just works"
Sweden do not have any use for big warships as our archipelago/ coastline have too many islands and tricky navigation. So to be quick and unseen is an big advantage.
The days of the big warships died after WW1; this is the way to go when subs can render big warships incapacitated.
Some more facts.
The Visby class corvette is designed for operation in the coastal waters of Sweden, and to be stealthy. These design goals have some effects.
* Mission duration is measured in weeks rather than months. Thus the amount of supplies (like food and fuel) required to be brought is a lot less than if operating on the high seas.
* To increase stealth the electrical systems on board is running at 50 Hz (to blend in with the background noise from land) rather than the marine standard of 60 Hz.
* The bridge windows, a requirement from the Navy, were very difficult to design and manufacture since they need to have radar properties as the hull. Thus they're some of the most expensive parts in the ship.
* Normally these corvettes have externally mounted radar reflectors, life rafts, and some other equipment to increase their radar profile in peacetime. Both for safety and to obscure their actual radar profile.
* The hull is semi planing and propulsion is by two water jets. This makes it fast, maneuverable, and able to go very shallow.
Adding to the last point that the Water jets also reduce the amount of noise generated by the ships propulsion.
It’s crazy to think there are only 10 million Swedes achieving these results, which is a population 35x less than the US!🤓🤪
@@davidrouth9901 well we been in war with Russia like 32 times in our history . We need advanced stuff to try even out what we lack in numbers haha
@@jimmiekarlsson4458 Most of Swedish conflicts were with Denmark, also being the two countries at war the most number of times between any two nations. Many do not know this but the Swedish Empire and its collapse was the birth of the Russian Empire and the Russian dominance in the north aswell as the east. Russia only got powerful enough once they could force the swedes out of what is now Saint Petersburg, used to be part of Sweden proper. But of course, Sweden merely delayed the inevitable as Russia would eventually win a war against Sweden due to the extreme difference in population and raw power.
I think it's more interesting though for non-swedes to read up more about the capabilities of Sweden during the mid-late cold war era. Sweden was serious about being able to outright halt an invasion from the USSR aswell as inflicting irreparable destruction of the Soviet Air Force, having over 10 000 combat ready aircraft, being the 4th largest Air Force in the world at the time for multiple decades with only around 6-7 million citizens. A military might that was never intended to win the war, but to cause so much destruction of enemy forces that it would be far too costly for what could be gained.
we are vikings what u expect :D
@@jimmiekarlsson4458 true and real. and they still fak with us. spy on gotland etc.
@@AtroFear"Far too costly" unfortunately seems not to be a problem for Russia. They have a different perspective of life and LIVES there.🤷
Looking at the history of Sweden and Russia, 'Rysshärjningarna', 1719-1721, three summers of classical Russian terrorism; plundering, killing, raping civilians and burning everything that was man-made, even killing the farm animals they didn't eat, taught the Swedish people the true meaning of the words "Ryssen kommer!" (The Russians are coming!).
Actually the first attack was in 1714, and several assaults were made on the northern parts of Sweden and the island of Gotland the years between 1714-1718, but the terror of constant raidings along the Swedish coast from Piteå in the north to Norrköping, 140 km south west of Stockholm, 50 km from the coastline.
We're not talking about small groups of soldiers, in Norrköping around 7000 troops burned down the city to ashes. But that was just a fraction of the 26 000 men's strong army, including Cusacks with horses Tsar Peter sent in 1719.
We learned one thing, when defending Stockholm. To stop an enemy in the Stockholm archipelago, small, fast ships, with a relatively low bottom is a great advantage. Sweden didn't have that, but with some luck and some cunning an exhausted Swedish defense managed to keep the Russians out of Stockholm. It was a close one, that could have gotten terribly wrong.
About that enemy, we should join the choir of Finland and the Baltic states; Don't fear, and never ever trust one word.
Sadly many politicians have become too affected by the thought of "Swedish diplomacy" that they tend to forget that mantra.
you use torpedos against subs mate lol, they are wire guided. The CIC fights the battles, fires the weapons, the bridge drives the ship, the galley is one of the most import parts of the ship, food is vital to moral. Connor the colour of the ship? look at the colour of the sky and the background try spotting one of those ships at a distance.....
In the Swedish Navy these corvettes are the biggest warships. Any bigger and they'll have problems navigating the shallow and narrow waters (in the archipelagos) where they're required to operate.
This fact is what would make Stockholm an inpenetrable fortress.
No, our mine sweepers are bigger, and we have some engineerships and command ships too...
@@SgtMclupus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warship
Command ships and minesweepers arent classified as warships. So while we do have bigger ships for other purposes than being on the warfront dishing out cannon fire they are not calssified as warships.
Classified*
@@leonirspaz540 That depends fully on if they have amament or not...
visby is armed with 1x bofors 57mm (2.2") mk3 gun, 8x rbs15 mk2/mk3/mk4 ashm (anti-ship missiles), 4x torped 45/47, some aa missiles, asw (anti-submarine weapon/warfare) rocket powered grenade launchers, mines and depth charges. might be worth looking into specific videos about each specific weapon system that goes into more detail about them (although a lot of information about them is still classified as its weapons currently in use)
about the cic and bridge, cic is for target acquisition for missiles and torpedoes, its where the radar and sonar operators are located, its also where the gunner manually controls the 57mm gun from, communication with command is done both from the cic and bridge, both has the radio equipment for that, bridge is primarily for steering the ship but is also used as atc when heli is landing and taking off.
the camo is actually good for the baltic and north sea and most of the north atlantic as its a more grey haze there, in a warmer climate like in the gulf of mexico, mid atlantic, the mediterranean and the south pacific, a more blue hue would be better for visual camouflage. as for the futuristic design, its as others have stated for radar crossection, similar how the zumwalts, f22, f35, f117, su57 and j22 are angular in their respective designs.
the smoky exhaust is a mix of smoke and mist, similar to how the exhaust of the f117 which is spread out thinly over lengths of its wings, the entire rear has an overhanging bit the entire beam (width) of the ship that is exhaust, spreading out the hot exhaust gasses over a wider area so it appears cooler on thermals and its sprayed with water vapour to cool it down even further.
Swedish airforce and army and navy shot missiles at the same time hitting the same target.....like last year ... hit the boat at the exact moment
Yes, the lower brass part is the casing, the entire green part is the projectile, it's coloured in different ways depending on what it does. Some do some crazy shit that just turns anything around it into fire, some penetrate even a really thick hull and set off a shape charge.
Sweden uses the new 40cm Torpedo 47 which has a range of over 20km is electric and can target both surface and submarine targets. But it's primarily intended against submarines.
One reason to use it against a surface target is to make a silent attack a missile launch is very visible but say you are in the archipelago you can sneak the torpedo out from behind an island and attack something on the other side.
Sweden has also ordered new torpedo tubes which can be double stacked so the Visby will be able to have 8 torpedoes ready in tubes
Awesome ship! We’ve got the Holland-class offshore patrol vessels, that come close to this ship class. And awesome to see a Dutch ship in the background during the last bit of the video. That large ship in the background, is probably the HNLMS Rotterdam, or the HNLMS Johan de Witt. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇸🇪🇳🇱🇺🇸
HNLMS Holland: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HNLMS_Holland_(P840)
HNLMS Johan de Witt: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/HNLMS_Johan_de_Witt
All the weapons on board are Swedish designed. The anti-ship missiles are for surface targets, the torpedoes are anti-submarine torpedoes. So they are not going for the same targets.
The wire is for guiding the torpedo to the target.
If you want to see effect on target with the 57 mm cannon, ruclips.net/video/rldn9Hvzih4/видео.htmlsi=b70eHI5AQysMeX9_ It uses the 3P shell, which stands for Pre-fragmented, Programmable, Proximity- fused shell. The shell can be programmed to function in different modes as it exits the barrel.
The Visby Corvettes will undergo maintainence for better AA-capabilities. And in the coming years we will see the new Luleå-class Corvettes, which are bigger Corvettes than Visby-class, and comes with even better equipment
Corvettes are small fast frigates, generally displacing from 500 to 1,000 tons and armed with missiles, torpedoes, and small naval guns for navies that operate in smaller seas such as the Baltic with large coast lines.
The Royal Navy, US and French navies prefer the larger ocean going Frigate to operate Worldwide, performing a similar role but far from its home base.
The torpedos works against both boats and submarines, the missiles do not work against submarines.
The helicopter on this ship is either for transport, or its for submarine hunting.
We are currently working on new boats that will be abit bigger than this, we dont have that many ships however, believe we got like 5 corvettes or something, then mostly small boats like the "combat boat 90" along with a few submarines
And the Anti Ship missile likely has a land attack mode too, so having both is good.
@@InquisitiveBaldMan ye thats true
@@InquisitiveBaldMan That makes a lot of sense! I'd also guess, that torpedoes are better for hitting targets below the waterline while missiles are better for above waterline hits. So having both indeed does sound useful!
These are also light weight torpedoes making them much smaller and easier to carry then missiles. Regular sized torpedoes are more then 5 times as heavy.
These are also the same ones that anti-sub helicopters will use so the ship carrying them means they could rearm a helicopter if needed.
On video they look way smaller than when you are standing next to one. Also, Sweden have 4 new ships on order, they are bigger than these one. They won't be delivered soon, expected to arrive 2030.
What I know the gray color makes you harder to spot then if you would try any other colors. I heard with airplanes that that the gray was a lot harder to spot then the Russian one that was painted blue.
About the weapons, there were actually 8 missiles which you read but seemed to forget and the reason I think they added torpedo's is to have more ways to hit the enemy. Torpedo's also gives a way to attack from under the surface to be harder to detect and having less counters against while with missiles you could shoot down. I read that why you have the wire linked to the torpedo is to launch it from the platform and then control and steer it into position. I think torpedoes would also be used against submarines.
The anti ship missile footage is from the youtube video "Här skyddar Försvarsmakten vår kust" from the official account of the Swedish armed forces.
It was an exercise in simultaneous engagement by air sea and land against a sea target using RBS-15 missiles. The missiles from all platforms arrived at the target at the same time.
As a swedish person i am happy to be on americans team/NATO
Mashed potatoes if I may correct. It's very important 😛
Torpedoes are similar to missiles, but since they travel under water they are also different, and used for different things.
If you want to hit a plane, use a missile, if you want to sink a ship, use a torpedo.
Food on ships are very good, in particular on small ships.
Sweden is extremely competent in warfare and military equipment. Recently The US Nationalgarde had a tough internal competition about cooperating with the Swedish armed forces. I belive New York nationalgarde stod as winner and now get the privilege of training with the Swedish armed forces.
now, color has nothing to do with stealth, the important thing with stealth is getting a surface where the radar waves gets redirected more or less... or absorbed, with absorbtion, the color might be an issue, since black helps alot on that one
The torpedo is primary a asw weapon. The Visby class have incedebly advanced sonar
My buddy from College is a certified Swedish Amphibious Corps which means that he gets to hang around military boats and more of the wet watery weathers and places. It’s also one of the two or three hardest types of soldier to become in Sweden. And he told me that they got to se classified videos and information that still aren’t public about the Swedish Corvette Ship. One of them being a video when they drop it upside down in the ocean and it flipping over to the correct side without any struggle or leakage
Torpedos for engaging submerged submarines, wheres as missiles can't, usually.
A corvette is like a smaller version of a frigate / frigette, but it can't operate on its own; it needs to be near a dock or a fleet.
I am Swedish
OMG! i did not know how strong our land was is just so tiny but so strong
lol the scene when they played card i thought the chef window was a tv first then i saw a hand come out of it hahaha :D
I'd take an opening that delivers food over a TV any day, lol.
Welcome to sweden. make sure that your a friend, first...
I from sweden
We were on your side LONG before we joined NATO. Sweden and the US have enjoyed a military partnership for quite a long time (I'm a Swede and while we never served under each other's command we have served together and in reality, we did have to serve under each others command at times though it was a whole idiotic thing to go through to play pretend we didn't afterwards).
true and real! ive always called sweden mini united states
@@saloscontent Oh no... ooooohhhh no, no, NO! We do NOT want to be considered any part of or any way akin to the US.
We would ALL take that as a horrific insult.
Fun fact the official max speed of the Visby is 35 knots.
I live in archipelago in Sweden.
My boat does 40 knots and l have tried to catch up with the Visby. I can’t out run it, it just disappears. So my guess is that the max speed of the dam thing is more like 50 knots.
Also that video is quite old they have gotten upgrades and are currently getting equipped with anti air missiles as we speak.
Stolt över att vara svensk 🇸🇪✊
I say that the last clip is outside of Norway. The people filming speaks Norwegian. And Swedish shores are usually pretty "flat". Well if you don't are at the High Coast up in the Bothnian sea of the Baltic. Our mountains are mostly at the border to Norway.
Yeah, like folks have said, torpedoes are for subs, but it's also just adding to the variety of options. These corvettes, (and we don't have many, lol), are sorta weak but does pack a punch, and they're very accurate.
57mm is a 6 pounder cannon caliber
Also check out Visby.
9:30 you see on the wall A red tower emblem/shield and a big iron key below it. Its the symbols of the city of Nyköping, from which the ship gets it's name HMS Nyköping.
Love from Finland to our Swedish Brothers and Sisters
im from sweden!
LOL
Nobody! joins the Navy to eat MREs!
Cool vid !
Man, if you're impressed by this corvette, beautiful ship, I can't imagine what the "Thaon di Revel-class" (also known as PPA) would do to your brain.
The shape of these Stealth Corvettes means that they are not visible on radar like other military vessels in different classes. The color gray so that these will be more difficult to detect with ordinary human eyes and binoculars. These Stealth Corvettes are not powered by propellers, but by water jet propulsion. This allows them to go on shallower water.
surströming be like "ooh shit here we go again" 🤣
We have no anti air on them though…
The torpedoes are for submarines.
I enjoyed watching that video about this ship
4:15 when your out of anti ship missiles
7:18 Keeping bridge up to date with information, coordinate/information sharing with other assets, tracking/sharing targets, firing weapon systems.. they probably to allot more.
You probably haven't been in the navy I hear, I had my time at KNM Oslo KNM Narvik in 1977-78 ;)
If living only on MRIs they would have to install more toilets. MRIs always gave me the shits.
If suprice mf was a boat 😉 shure they are small but over powerd according what they are made to do aka coastal naval warfare not build for the big seas persey but can whit out mutch trubble guard a conwoy if need be
Yes lingonsylt.

Mr. McJibbin, may I suggest a little research about the topic BEFORE you are reacting to it. It would make you look a little bit more serious.
But then again, Americans is not know to be that smart also
Why make a reaction video if you have no idea on surface combat? The torpedos are for antisub warfare only. Combat is controlled from CIC, bridge for navigation.
Funny he so totally oblivious about what he is trying to "educate" us about. Major CRINGE. Not the Sharpest knife in the drawer…….
The Norwegian corvettes are faster and have NSM
Why on god's green earth do you react to military gear? You don't even have a basic understanding of what part of a bullet actually is the projectile!
How about taking the time to calculate what 57mm is in inches? So that you can have a basic understanding of the size! 57 mm is about 2.25 inches. Geez
The wire guiding of the torpedo.
Next reaction....look at the sun and react to it.
This is one of the sumbeat videos out!
