Do you find much difference in how the fingers behave depending on the size of the stick? I almost always use a 7A because of how it feels with standard grip and how the tip responds to surfaces (better drop/catch control and bounce) but find that a larger stick suits my trad grip and efforts to get a roll like you demonstrate here... This contradiction is frustrating for me!
Sounds like you either don't have the fulcrum placement in the base of your thumb figured out properly and/or you're relying too much on bounce and losing control of the stick as a result. May also be not enough developed forearm strength and control. The stick shouldn't make too much difference to the extent it is for you with trad grip. Not trying to push you into lessons at all by suggesting this, but it might be your best bet to head over to JohnHvastaDrums.com and set up a lesson to get the situation properly analyzed and helped.
Thanks for taking the time to post this really useful information, and have a great holiday everyone.
Glad it was helpful! Happy holiday, Paul!
