i think the ending was such that it gives us the hope and hint that they will end up together in future. right now they have nobody else in their lives except each other

(spoilers here) i mean they dont become a couple but they niccolo improves a lot as a person and shows chiara he's a true friend to her and cares for her. but he's obviously still in love with her. plus chiara and damiano do not end up together, damiano finds another girl and at the end niccolo is there for chiara. not as her boyfriend but as a great friend. but the last scene is so good and it ends in such a way that it gives us a hint that they'll become a couple in future.
