    For those who think this won't work because it doesn't filter 100% of dust that's pulled through, keep in mind that even a Hepa filter exhausts the clean air into the dirty air you're trying to clean so it takes multiple passes anyways. If you can pass twice the volume of air with 1/2 the filtration effectiveness, the end result is the same.

      Thanks for that link. I've been running 3 such filters around the house non-stop on low speed for months now and can't believe we used to breath in all that dust continuously. Now when a ray of sunshine comes through the window, there's only a few floating specs of dust illuminated instead of the cloud of it I used to see.

    The filter goes BEHIND the fan, not in front, following the air flow diagram. Blowing the air into the filter is backwards and you will end up blowing the allergens back into the surrounding air.

    • @HartzHomestead

      It's true, best to put the filter on the intake side of the fan so the air gets filtered first before blowing through the fan. Keeps the fan clean and the pollutants stuck to the filter. Good point.

    • @donutman3089
      @donutman3089 Месяц назад

      @@occfilms To be honest, after watching more closely, I have never seen a fan with a cord that plugs in right into the fan motor like that. All of the box fans I've seen from the big box stores have the cord ran to one side of the frame, which is much easier to tape off. Yeah, that fan is weird, never seen that. On the flip side and if you had that fan shown, build a box of five air filters and run the cord through a corner. The more air filters, such as in a box, will increase the efficiency of the entire unit, allowing more CFM of air to flow.

    shouldn't the filter be on the back /intake side of the fan since operations of furnaces are with filters on the intake , so I feel this should be set up the same. clean the air coming in and output fresh air. it will at least keep your fan free of dust.

    • @Him__Downstairs
      @Him__Downstairs 2 года назад +1

      You would be inhibiting the fan from sucking air in to some large degree by placing it on the back Also that accelerated air being pushed directing into the filter rather that being pulled into the filter is way more efficient in terms of actually cleaning the air.

    • @HartzHomestead
      @HartzHomestead 2 года назад +2

      Yes, it's best to put the filter on the intake side, because then the fan is sucking the filter to the fan and will even hold it on without tape. If you put it on the out side, you need a much better tape job to hold it on and the fan gets dirty. Either way the fan works equally hard to move air through the filter.

    I'd recommend to put the filter in the back of the fan rather then the front.
    If you look at most of the purifier designs the filter comes first then the fan.
    With this current setup dirt/hair/particles still get through the fan and will be stuck on the blades so once you do remove the filter you'll end up blowing it back out.

    • @martinkrauser4029
      @martinkrauser4029 3 года назад +6

      this is not true when tested, and in most cases putting it in front will work better because the interaction between the fan and the filter creates an area of higher pressure and that's good for filtering for some reason

Hence the dimond side is up against the fan and the view of the filter from behind, shows the face with the pleated side and no diamon card board panel showing. Right?

      @@Eric-nu3wh Yes, he did mention about somethings like, avoid blue fiberglass type filter, go for a white one that is rated 10~12. It's good information. But is this enough information when it comes to comparing A(Box fan with FPR9 filter) to B(Coway with HEPA filter)? I don't think so. When you compare two things you have to mention the major facts that may affect the result. As he said, the air purifier is pretty much all about fan & filter.
      He did say what filters he used but didn't say anything about the functional differences between them. If you already knew this kind of stuff you could tell the final result is brought about the filter differences. But if you are new to this you would probably think A is just not good enough than B based on the given information in this video and that's not fair in my point of view.

      No, an air filter by itself will only remove particles, not VOC. However you can buy charcoal filter material and tape it to the furnace filter, and the charcoal will remove chemicals from the air that a simple filter won't. My next video will cover that.

    • @travisminton2141
      @travisminton2141 3 года назад

      Design wise it might be best if your filter is bigger than the fan. If the fan is bigger then air will flow around the filter into the fan instead of going through the filter into the fan. Air flow will try to take the path of least resistance. If your fan is wide than the filter you might need to use some cardboard to cover the open part of the fan so that air can't go around the filter.

  • @nickdipietro9696

    A 1 inch furnace filter doesn't purify air. It's literally only meant to keep a minor amount of dirt and dust out of the furnace to keep it running longer/better. Also putting a 1 inch filter that is a a high Merv on your furnace is really bad for your furnace. It restricts too much air. Those 3m ones they sell at big box stores that are 1 inch 13 Merv filters are furnace killers. Need a 4 inch filter to go that high Merv.

    • @tjnelson111
      @tjnelson111 4 года назад

      My furnace tech told me to always use the really cheap nylon ones if you want the best performance from my new furnace. If I wanted a pleated on to get the cheapest one possible.

    • @shadowdemon7770
      @shadowdemon7770 4 года назад +3

      Yeah no. Let me tell you, cheap ones may move more air, and the more expensive ones move less, but I used cheap ones for years, and my A/C condenser cools clogged up with dust bunnies and I was forced to cut open duct work to access the inside coils to clean them. I wish I could show you pictures. There's a trade off, cheap gets you more air but will likely clog your coils, expensive ones move less air but keep the coils nice and clean.

    So what molkule about

  • @mershymarsh
    @mershymarsh 4 года назад +1

    Nonsense, box fans don't have enough static pressure or airflow, and 1" pleated filters don't typically work well at small particle size. This is like trying to DIY sunscreen or sunglasses, but not actually achieving any measurable UV protection.

    • @churblefurbles
      @churblefurbles 4 года назад +1

      the air flow is cut when using a low static pressure fan, its not zero, number of pleats depends on how much you pay, again the purifiers you pay for also use pleated filters, just smaller or round. That being said you aren't saving much over a dedicated solution once you factor in the cost of a merv13.
