- How to Purify Air from Smoke | Air Purifier for Allergies | DIY Filter for Wildfire Smoke
Over the past couple of weeks, wildfires have been a major problem on the west coast. The air is full of smoke to the point that it's blocking the sun. People are having more and more trouble breathing as a result. This is a simple way to purify the air in your home from all the smoke until this passes. Using a cheap box fan and a good quality air filter, this little DIY air purifier will also work for allergies and is way better and cheaper than an expensive store bought unit.

i dont mean to be offtopic but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@King Rowan Instablaster =)
@Gael Jagger I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out now.
Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Gael Jagger it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out!
@King Rowan you are welcome =)
It’s a great idea. I have been using one in my woodshop for a couple years. One tip I would give is to use painters tape to tape it on. Much easier to replace and works just as good.
Thanks for the tip, Dave. It really is a great way to clean the air, been using this for years now.
I wanted to say how great full I am to you for this suggestion. I non stop worry about my pets, one has asthma, one has itching he gets shots for.
The machines Ive purchased are very expensive & Tiny!
I just lost my youngest baby he wasn’t even 4, out of the blue he couldn’t breath, I took him to the ER it was Sunday & they said he had fluid on his lungs around his heart & his heart was enlarged. This will probably sound insane but we were soul mates he went through so much with me, but he was always beside me.
Literally when I got up to throw something away he got up too!
I’m broken from this & well with the skies the past few years Who knows how much time anyone has left here in the US GOD BLESS THANK YOU AGAIN. #RestInParadose&PeaceMigi until we are together again!
I love you so much Mommy ❤️
My new furnace uses those thick filters, and it has been a blessing to breathe clean air. Every time the air conditioner or furnace runs, the return air is forced through that large filter. When neither the furnace nor the air conditioner is running (in mid-spring and mid-fall), I can switch the thermostat to the 'fan-only' setting. By doing this, the air in the house cycles through that filter. ~Margie
My furnace is either on or off. I'd really like to separate the heating part from the fan so I can do what you do with just having the fan on.
@@MikeKincaid79 The furnace I had to replace operated the way yours does. If you talk to a heating specialist (I'm lucky to have one in the family), they might be able to change out your thermostat. I think it's worth asking, but I don't know if you would be able to use one of the large filters without having a lot of ductwork done.
Nifty idea, good show. I bought a smaller hepa/uv air filter 3 years ago but was moving, so just opened this week. Was less than $200. We live small but will share with my families in Seattle area. Thank you for thinking smart and sharing. Ray has COPD. So glad it’s raining!!
The rain sure is a blessing today. Hopefully the skies will be a little more clear tomorrow.
I'm sitting beside my cute little hepa filter and sneezed 9 times in a row. I'm trying this set up! Thanks Mike 👍
Haha, I've been there. This little set up will work much better for you.
Mike, That was a great fyi. I never would of thought of that, I will be making one of them for my house.
You'll love the results, Richard, it works really well.
Me too ,I'll try it before I buy the HEPA. I remember how much dust they picked up without filter and the fans looked nasty.👍👍
Perfect idea! It's crazy how fast the dust and air pollutants build up on these filters. You never realize how many pollutants are in your own home everyday. Crazy!
Glad we've got it running in our house.
Great idea!! U addressed all m
y questions as u went along. I've been walking to& from work for more than a year. The wildfires have eliminated the walls cuz of the smoke...will try this set up once I get paid!! Thank You!!
It works well. I've been using this for over a decade and it really cuts down on allergens in the house.
Thanks dude, your a great life saver
It works great. Good luck!
Couldn't for the life of me find a box fan with the corners filled in. Also couldn't find a 4" filter in the appropriate size, will have to order online. We have a fire pit happy neighbor and the smoke is starting to leech into the house on a regular basis. Hoping this works to get rid of it. Great video.
I’ve had mine running 24/7 for many years and it works great. Helped clear up allergens in my house a great deal. I change the filter twice a year.
that is such a great idea mike. thanks so much. for the last 3 weeks I have been having allergy problems from people in the area using their wood fireplaces. i feel like gauging my eyeballs out sometimes. sneezing and runny nose are not for me with asthma. I've got the box fan; just need the filter. super. carmine.
Yeah, it works really well. I've been using it for over 12 years and it's always running in the background year round. Really helps with the air quality.
There are a lot of different builds on youtube. Yours is simple and to the point. If someone wants to be elaborate they can build wooden boxes that the filters insert. Amazing what one can find on youtube
Thanks, I appreciate your support. I've thought about building one of those elaborate boxes but in the end I never do because it's just so cheap and easy to do it this way.
This is a great way to filter air. The hard part may be finding the good filters but that's a sign of the times that we're experiencing atm. A few years ago, I saw a video from some folks in China doing exactly this for their home.
Last year, I put a pair of the cheap, stringy blue filters onto a pair of 20" fans that I place in one of my windows just to see how much dirt I was bringing in. After only a week or two, the filters were all fuzzy from the junk coming in the window. It's pretty dry and dusty here on the high plains in Colorado.
They sure do work well. I'll bet a dusty location like where you're at really jams them up.
@@MikeKincaid79 Yeah, man. Continue to keep your windows and doors closed or you'll be changing filters every few days, the way conditions are out there. It's crazy that someone like you have to be inside to get clean air. You don't live in 1970's Pittsburgh.
Mike, a million thanks, I was researching hepa filters to put in my mother’s bedroom and not only are they expensive, but noisy. I look forward to put the fan project to work. God bless.👏
Good luck! It's a way better set up than those store bought systems!
Thanks Mike! This will help lots of folks.
I sure hope so!
Great idea. From experience living currently in the North Bay/Wine Country of CA where we had the firestorm in 2017 and massive fires before and after that you will have to change the filter much more frequently when the skies are filled with smoke and don't forget to change the one on the house too if you have central air as it will be clogged too. Stay safe.
Yes, very good point. Hopefully people will remember to change their main filter if they have central air.
Hiya Mike from Epsom, South West London 🇬🇧
Gonna share this video to my youngest son in San Jose CA, the air quality is just as bad! Great it's so efficient and low cost, thank you! As always so much common sense from you ❤
Thanks for sharing, Lee, and I hope your son is safe from all these fires. It's been really bad around here lately.
Thanks Mike, yes he's safe but losing some work, since he's graduated from SJSU this year he secured part time work as a water polo coach, (was #8 for SJSU Men's Water Polo, Ashley Castle, for the last 4 years ),between Corona and fires he's not having too much luck 😅
Hey I could really use something like that in my house right now with my allergies starting to act up. What a great, great affordable solution for me, and TYVM. 👍Awesomeness!
It really is a great little setup and very cheap and easy to put together. This idea came to me about 12 years ago out of necessity (allergies) and it's been a lifesaver. Just thought I'd post a video about it today due to all the wildfires. I know it will work out well for you and help with your allergies. You can even put one in your bedroom with the door closed and turn it on low. The air in your bedroom will be super clean all night while you're sleeping and you'll wake up breathing really easy.
@@MikeKincaid79 I believe it. Fantastic idea, thanks again for sharing your creative genius. I'll be getting one tomorrow ! 🙂👍
I am in the Longview Kelso area our worst air was 320 (in the hazardous range) and 40 miles south was at 520, beyond hazardous. I have asthma and have had chemicals and stuff trigger anaphylactic shock! Thankfully almost two years ago God cured me of most of it. I have struggled with a lot of headaches and lack of concentration with the smoke. The rain that started last night brought us down to an air quality of 10 today!!!! It feels good to be able to breath and no sore throat or head aches! I wish the winds would blow it east to put the fires out. I am thankful I did not end up in the ER!!! I will recommend this to friends though!
I'm so glad to hear that you're alright. Didn't know you were so close to us. The rain really has been a blessing today and hopefully it will be more clear in the morning. This filter works great and I've been using it with the same box fan for about 12 years. We just keep it running on low in the house and it makes a big difference in the air quality. Really cheap too and much more effective than expensive units.
Great idea, especially with another month of fire season here in the Santa Clara valley of northern California where we're currently surrounded by smoke. For both filtered air and a little cooling breeze your idea will be put to use. Don't care if the contraption is purty if i ain't coughing and wheezing for awhile. 👍
It definitely does the trick and will save your lungs. God bless you guys and I pray the air clears soon.
Thanks Mike. You are always helping us out! Stay safe and I'll pray for rain out West.
Thanks, Sam, just looking forward to all this smoke clearing up.
That’s a great info, Mike! I have the same type of fan! Thank You so much. I’ve been using N95 mask inside and outside the house!
It really does work well!
thats a Mirv 12 filter, thats almost there. it's when you get to mirv 13 and above (max is 16) that you really start to filter out even the smallest particulates. Mirv 13 is fantastic for smoke and it is even capable of trapping Corona.
i have a mirv 13 4 inch on a 20 inch box fan in my living room and it works amazing.
Also if you want to upgrade this system look up the Comparetto cube, now that thing really does the job of maximum filtration. I know contractors who bring a Compretto cube to job sites, it's easy, it's cheap and disposable. it works phenomenal.
I've seen those cubes and thought about making a video about it but 4 filters sure would be spendy. I'll be the house would have crystal clear air though, lol.
@@MikeKincaid79 57 bucks for 4 filters not too horrible
you get 6 months out of them and yes they filter everything
There is a lot of controversy about what rating filter to use as to avoid fire hazard/burning out the fan...Many posts say lower rating is safer (like Merv 10) and doesn't strain the motor, but doesn't filter as well as a 14. Thoughts on this?
Great idea im going to make one thank you so much, will let you know know how it works for us.
Awesome! It will work fantastic, I promise!!!
Hi! I want to say thank you for this video!!! For so many reasons I am so thankful to you - this information is so darn perfect!
Glad it's good helpful info for you. I almost didn't post this one because it was so off base from what I normally do but I thought it could help some people and I've used it for years with great results.
@@MikeKincaid79 i shared your video as well with loved ones!
Thanks Mike, can I use a setup like this to eliminate cigarette smoke and odor in a 10x10 room
Yes, absolutely. All it takes is the right filter. For smells, you may need a carbon filter.
His filter system realy does work. We have used one of the same filters. It has a MERV rating of 12 if you need to compare to other model filters. Ours only lasted about a ten days in the worst smoke and it realy improved the air quality in the house. My wife has asthma and better air is a lifesaver for her. It was realy hard to find a replacement, all the stores were out. All we could get was another brand MERV 13 rated, it worked but not as well the air volume was realy reduced. So I will get two of the origanal filters as replacements as soon as they are avalable. If you think you may ever have a smoke event get a filter now. My fan has a square grill and I can feel the air leak back so I am going to add some card board to the corners.
Thanks for your experience with this setup, David. It's a great way to filter a ton of air quickly.
Excellent! When the hysteria first started with the virus, i bought those N95 furnace filters for home or even mask making if things got desperate.
Great tip!
K&N sells lifetime washable filters for home HVAC the amount of money saved is worth it.
Thanks, I'll have to look into it.
L
is that HVAC washable filter hepa grade?
I'm new to filters and trying to help my asthmatic cat with insane amount of dust in less than 200 sq feet area. I looked into the K&N filters. Wondering, why would anyone buy disposable filters (for example best ones I see are Filtrete/Merv11/4pack/$50) that last 3 months vs a K&N $40 lifetime, washable filter? Also is there any risk of toxins being blown into our home from the synthetic polymer materials of the K&N? Thanks

Good idea Mike! Thanks! I will show it to Chris. Hugs!🤗💜💜💜
It works great! Hugs back at ya, Camelia. Now get to bed!
Thanks Mike! I am getting to bed right now. Pray for us. Chris has shingles and I don't want it. Thanks God is just a small one but still hurts plenty bad ....thankfully he resists to pain vary well, which sometimes is not that good. But my parents are old and they don't deal with pain that well and I don't need this. I don't sleep that good as is. Ok thanks Mike! Good night! I am putting my phone on airplane mode for the night. Will talk to you in the am.(it is the am right now...lol but I mean later) night! Hugs to you and your girls!🤗🤗🤗💜💜💜
Perhaps with a marker write the date of attachment on the filter's edge. Praying for your family and others in the west.
That's a good idea. Thanks, Joan.
Great info... I’ve shared in hopes that some dealing with any of this will see it and it might help. Thanks
You're welcome, and thanks for sharing!
Weird it was hazy even in Oklahoma also. I could look right at the sun without it hurting my eyes
Be careful, the sun is still pumping out radiation and it travels through the smoke.
Tks for this most helpful video.

Never thought of doing this..but, makes since....great dyi....thank you....💕💗
No problem 😊
What a great 👍 idea 💡
Thanks.

Do you just put in the room or in the window? I’m so excited to try this! Thanks!!
I just run it in my living room and it continually cleans the air.
Hi Mike, you creativity and engineering skills are amazing, as well as presentation and speaking.
Thanks, Natalya!
Taping a filter to a fan is engineering ¿ ok people been doing this for years
That's great Mike, thank GOD for that filter because it's gonna protect you your family and that's what matters most right now, GOD bless you and your family and everyone and everything you care about, bye for now ✋ ✌.
It sure is a lifesaver.
Put a cheap prefilter in front of the expensive filter to trap the bigger dust particles. Make the better one last longer.
That's a great idea, Dave!
Would having 2 filters be more of a motor strain risk/fire hazard?
@@kricketkitty no risk … the large particulate prefilter has very little air resistance. It’s one of those flat non Pleated fiberglass filter meant be changed every month … normally they are blue or green and virtually see thru.
Love the idea of this dyi air purifier...
It's just hard finding reputable filters from various vendors on amazon. I've seen complaints from different customers saying that they bought a certain level of filter, yet received unmarked [or suspicious] filters instead.
For example: vendor advertises a merv 15 level filter... customer receives an unmarked filter OR a filter that has a [haphazardly placed] merv 15 filter on a product that looks to be a merv 8 item.🤦♂️
Smh 🤷♂️
As far as I know, I've always received what I paid for on Amazon but I guess you never really know. I usually buy these at Lowes and can look over the package before buying, but they were out at this time.
Thank you so much, Mike! I appreciate this information! I shared this information with all my loved ones!
It’s a great little makeshift air cleaner. I’ve used it in my house for over a decade and love it. Thanks for sharing it with your family.

Nice video. Reduces pathogens hanging around in the air too like covid/flu/RSV (EDIT: ah you mentioned that, thank you! i wish more people were aware of this)
These are handy for ppl who have to clean up crime scenes. Place two or three of these with a carbon filter taped to the air filters and turn them up on high. In 30m to 1h smell is gone
LOL, I hadn't considered that but sounds like it would work really well for that.
THANK YOU! !!!!
I am going to make one for my parents ASAP!
We were finally able to see the mountain today (it's less than a mile from our place). Hopefully it'll keep raining for a while and clean the smoke out of the air.
I sure hope so, we need some rain and more clean air. Hope you're getting along OK through all this, Sandy.
I put one of these together today My wonderful husband thinks I'm crazy. I've got it set up in our home office I'm going to make one for he living room and our bed room. Thinking about making a really nice looking cabinets to hide them.
LOL, he'll laugh until he sees how well they work. I always planned to build a nice cabinet too but still haven't. It would make things easier and no tape involved
Lasko air flex fan comes with filter on the back. Model FF305.
Wow, never saw that before, thanks for mentioning it. Would be cool if they build a wider lid on back for a 4 inch filter too.
The lasko box fans in my area have changed. The power dial is in the center of the rear of the fan and the plug comes out of the same area.
Time to find a new fan.
Great year round!

Lasko has a filter fan
Would it be better to put it in front or the back side like you did?
I like to pull air through it as opposed to pushing air through. I don’t know why, it just feels right. I think your fan would get excessively dirty very quickly if it was behind the filter.

It's a beautiful city with a lot of culture. I just can't see it very well right now, LOL.
@Roseanna Martin go away
@Roseanna Martin uhhh news flash, republicans have run the White House for 4 years and the Senate for 7. So if you want to blame someone for the state of the country look to those in charge. Congress can't pass any bill without the Senate's approval so you can't blame Congress.
Thank you,

That is wonderful to hear 😊
mike kincaid Do those filters get rid of the chemicals and vics in cigarette smoke or just the odor?
It really depends on the filter you use. The one I have gets rid of smoke. You can buy any type of filter to suit your needs, including a hepa filter. The beauty of this setup is that it's cheap to put together and can be done in 5 minutes.
what can you add to filter out the smell of cigars? carbon filter or is it bad to inhale what the carbon filters leech off?
I'm sure a carbon filter would do the trick, although more expensive. You need carbon for smells in most cases.
One more question. Can you share the dimensions of your box fan that is square with that filter?
It's exactly 21 inches squared, and 4.5 inches thick.
Make up your mind do you change the filter twice a year, or every six months??
Decisions, decisions
Do more urine fertilizer videos please. Compare it to commercial fertilizers.
I wanted to do that this summer but time got away from me. I plan to do more in the future but it will be next summer at the earliest.
The best filter is an active carbon filter. Of course, know that the lighter it is, the poorer quality it is!
QUESTION... will this remove the odor of cat box in granddaughter's bedroom? her sister's cat, allergic so cat lives in non-allergic sister's room.
Smells are a tough one. It really depends on the filter you have and the size micron of the odor. When it comes to eliminating odor, you really should look at a carbon filter.
@@MikeKincaid79 ok. thanks for replying. i saw a double bucket/screen/charcoal with a fan. he is off grid so his design is solar. i will ask him what plug in fan i could use. your idea was just sooo much simpler!!! ty
I’m confused which side does it go on? The font or back. Why no one mentions this? Basic Info.
It goes on the back of the fan. You want the air to get pulled through the filter, not pushed through.
@@MikeKincaid79 Thanks
Demonstrate how strong the suction is?
That's a great idea. I'll have to do this with smoke or something similar for next summer.
So you put the back or from of the fan.
back of the fan to pull air through it.
Thank you
You can see the orange hue even on your video. Put a huge box fan outside and turn it on with a filter on it.
I'd need one heck of a box fan!
@@MikeKincaid79 not 100% sure but I think we may be getting some of the smoke here because the sun looks really hazy.
I'm new to air purification systems and the myriad of filters. Am trying to help my asthmatic cat with insane amount of dust in less than 200 sq feet area. I looked into the K&N filters. Can you please explain, why would anyone buy disposable filters (for example Filtrete/4pack/$50) that last 3 months vs a K&N synthetic or stainless steel, $40=$50 lifetime, washable filter? The K&N and Filtrete are both Merv 11, stainless is Merv 6). Also is there any risk of toxins from the synthetic polymer materials of the K&N? And would the 4" filter be overkill and a waste of money vs a 1" filter/10/11 or 12 merv rating? Thank you!
Those are some great questions for the right person or someone willing to sit down and do more research on it, lol.
@@MikeKincaid79 Thanks Mike. I went with a 5" Merv 13 filter to tape on the back of a box fan. Now I'm trying to figure out a few more things, if you have any input that would be greatly appreciated. This box fan air purifier system, while it is filtering the indoor air, will also be stirring up a huge amount of dust particles just by having a fan on. We would prefer not to be in the room when this is taking place.
So regarding the filtration rate, do you know how long would it take to filter the air in a small room, so that all the indoor air has been purified, with time for whatever remaining "dust to settle" so to speak? An hour, a day? And how many times, by per how often would this cycle need to take place to maintain clean air? If you don't know these kind of technical effectiveness questions, can you recommend where to find out?
Thanks again : )
I leave mine running 24/7. The box fan should have info on it or on the packaging that gives you the cubic feet per minute. Then you can figure out the cubic feet of the space you are in and it would be easy to figure out from there how fast the air in the room will turn over.
Thanks, San Francisco Bay area has been covered by smoke/ashes for weeks now...near-genius idea.🤔🤔
Thanks! Hopefully it will help many other people. Sorry to hear San Fran is covered in smoke too. I don't know if anyone has escaped it on the west coast. San Fran is a beautiful area and I'd love to visit again someday.
What if you put the filter in the front instead of the back??
Not sure what that would achieve but I prefer pulling the air through the filter vs pushing it. If you pull it through, the air has nowhere to go but through. If you push it, the pressure can overcome the filter and squeeze back out the back of the fan.
Would a 20 x 20 by 5 " be too big?
Sounds like a good size to me
@@MikeKincaid79 OK Thanks!
is the filter attached to the front or the back?
It's attached to the back.
This question sounds really dumb... but please understand I'm in Australia and the houses and apartments I've lived in have only ever had windows for air circulation and wood fires for heat...and some more expensive places have air conditioners (reverse cycle) - I think they're also known as heat pumps, but I've never had one.
So, my dumb question is... what are those filters you're using there normally for that are so common to buy? Do you guys have inbuilt house filtration or something? I can't say I've ever seen a filter box like that at our hardware stores (Bunnings, for instance) - unless it is for an oven slide-out rangehood over your oven. :-| What a bugger. I have seen box fans like that, so that would be perfect for our own bushfire prone country.
Most of our houses in the northern areas have a forced air heating system. A gas, oil or electric heater with a fan and duct pipes to move the hot air. Almost always there is a filter before the fan.
On our 20 inch portable box fan a 20 inch by 20 inch by 4 inch filter with MERV 12 rating worked well for us. It is a 3M Filtrete 1550.
We also do heat with wood.
Thanks for answering that, David, and I'd just add that some homes in different parts of the country don't have central air with a place for a filter (like my house) so I had to set this fan up the way I did.
@@davej7458 Thank you so much for answering this so thoroughly. :-) Appreciate it!
@@MikeKincaid79 Thanks so much for the additional information, Mike. :-) Appreciate it!
Smoke haze here in Texas today
You know what to do
My friend, you have made a huge error. Smoke is only filtered by ACTIVATED CARBON, not HEPA or other filters. Your filter does not contain activated carbon and does NOT filter smoke.
Hmmm, that’s interesting. I’m looking at a new one right now and it says it filters smoke right on the package.
Umm if u just leave ur ac on instead of auto it will do this also
Unless you don't have an ac
Ok, I’m searching these videos and I thought I was supposed to put the filter in the front of the fan. No? Incorrect? That’s what others say to do. 😩. Help, help, help!!! PLEASE! Also, for a room say a bedroom, where should I place it? On a table, floor, does that matter?
It makes more sense to me to put it on the back of the fan and pull air through the filter. Just my opinion though. I've been doing it this way for about 12 years and it works great. Mine sits on the floor, the air circulates everywhere in the room over time.

Thank you for your reply!
@@MikeKincaid79 Makes sense, since that's the same way a furnace does it!
I remember the air quality real bad when Mt St Helens blew it's top
I was 1 year old and living in Phoenix, Arizona so don't remember it but if Mt. Rainier ever blows, I'll be ready for it.
"Inch? Half inch? IDK..." If only they listed this somewhere on the filter itself... 👀
1/2 inch LOL 😆😂🤣
Mike, hepa filters are a ripoff! i had one, i didn't know they made a four inch filter, this is a good thing to do even if you didn't have the smoke! i have three fans set up like this in my house so the air circulates in a circle all the way around my house, i use the one inch 20x20 purple, just like the one your using, and i have too replace them about every two months, smart move! i started using them about 8 eight years ago ( "after" i had one of my lungs removed!!) i run mine on 2 and 24/7 , it's amazing how much trash is in the air, and i don't open my windows, central air, and my house was built with 2x6 walls, the air wasn't bad when we bought the house back in the 80's but in the 15 or so years they have cleared about 3-4 hundred acres (housing) and now there's just dust every where, oh, where's Empress Wu??, have a good day, Mike
She's out there in a pot with the others. I didn't get to a video about it this summer but I'll film here when I find a good spot to plant out on the property.
What Technology should you show of buy in 2023 on Amazon, Etsy, eBay, or Websites your location?
Technology Items more convenient.
Also more expensive and not necessarily better
I don't think it's a good idea to use a 4" filter vs a 1" one. For this comparison, I'm using two Filtrete filters, around 1500 MPR.
The 20" x 20" x 4" wide filter: 36 (18 pleats x 2 sides) x 4" wide = 144 square inches
The 1" wide filter: 126 (63 pleats x 2 sides) x 1" wide = 126 square inches
In other words, you're only getting 12.5% more square inches of filtration with the 4" filter, but you're paying 50% more ($30 vs $20) for the larger filter. In conclusion, if you use the 4" filter, you would be paying a much higher price for just a 12.5% improvement in filtration. Go with the 1" & save you're money.
You gotta do what makes ya feel good.
@@MikeKincaid79 Thanks for your video. Many people can benefit by using this type of diy purifier. I'm just trying to help people save money.
@@Guachum you forgot to consider the workload on the fan. Greater surface area= less resistance= not overworking your fan motor ;)
@@xxkeena There shouldn't be a noticeable difference in the workload of the fan since the difference in surface area between the two options in my comparison is only 12.5% (126 square inches vs 144 square inches).
However, the research comparing the 1” and 4” filters does indeed show the 4” filters’ filtration capacity can be 3-4X greater than the 1” filters;
and this couldn’t be achieved with only 12-13% more media.
Possibly the actual pleat sizes are not exactly,
1” and 4”?
