John Bowe said in an interview, the Sierra engine without the turbo they made about 95--100hp with the turbo 550hp+++, DJR Sierra,s by 92--93 were up to 650hp, that comes on like a bomb going off, and only 2WD ( rear ).
Yes I have seen the interview regarding the engine dyno testing. I would be very surprised if the engines made that power tbh. I think Grp A Cosworth power outputs are a bit exaggerated. I think 530bhp is where they where but if anyone knows more about that I would be interested to know. Fantastic to see Brock in an Ex Rouse (ARE) car really dominate that race. ARE DJR really built the fastest sierras & very closely matched.
Thank you Gents for putting a great race on your website. Poor DJ was trying his hardest to beat Peter Prefect but DJ just wasn't in the same class of driver as Brocky or Jimmy Richards. Just DJ has more money to spend in the years of the 4 Cylinder Turbos. DJ did a truly amazing job of setting up the fastest Fords in the world at the time. As he was the first guy to bring the top engineers out to the Australian Touring car championship and help to put it on the map as a World Class Competition. That's why DJ is in the hall of fame, as he has done his bit for motorsport in Australia. Just he couldn't drive as good as Brocky. Anyway thanks again gents, as a great website.
The BETTER TYRE won on the day. All the front running driver's can drive these cars to the limit. The most important limit is the TYRE. BRIDGESTONE beat DUNLOP on this day. Also,it was great to see John Smith on the podium. It was such a shame he was never given the opportunity to drive in a top level team as John Bowe was by Dick.
What rubbish. Brocky was carried by factory backed Holden money for most of his career. DJ was the one who had to work hard and drive harder to make it. DJ had the talent to win the championship 5 times across the group C and A eras so he is well and truly up there
Obviously didn’t see Brock spin the car the race beforehand at Winton. In Europe in 1986 and ‘87 Brock was off the track more than he was on it . I used to laugh with Peter about it . Actually a nice guy in the pit paddock.
"They had to bow to john bowe " " winner oran park got home early " to " go for a tosca " ( if peter janson was in the race wood have gone for " a cherry ripe " ) lol
RIP Mike Raymond (1943-2019) & this was the fifth year of Channel 7's coverage of the ATCC in 1989.
Thank you always for your uploads! These are so iconic. So awesome to see some of these legends still racing in TCM now.
Came to you from touring car masters, and amazing how many of the names are familiar

Oh plleaaassse. DJ won 5 championships his first 2 basically on his own. What crock to say he could not drive as good as Brock.

Serria cup back in those days great cars love a crack in one as well as Godzilla that’s a dream I’d love to come true!
Rural setting.. now a housing estate..
29:37 maybe he'll punt him off lol
Sierra one make serious until Godzilla came along changed the game...
Rs500 the king of 80s group a touring cars
What a shame that both Amaroo and Oran Parks are now housing estates.
To me 1989 was the most boring year of racing! It really was a case of which sierra is winning!
