Probably because Yugi didn’t know he’ll draw claw of hermos combo with spider web with pot of greed! So Yugi had to play safely by summoning big shield gardna in defense.
These both duels are one of my favourite duels in whole Yugioh. Rafael and his Guardian Monsters are so cool.

7:03 Why did Yugi choose Big Shield Gardna and not a monster with at least 1200 ATK like King's Knight ? He could have attacked directly and won.
