You can also adjust Manticores by giving them Scorpion tails injecting venom instead of spikes.
It occurs to me that an early Piers Anthony novel of Xanth featured a Manticore on the cover. Yeah, it was the first novel, A Spell for Chameleon. Michael Whelan did the cover art.

Great video. Always liked the monsters from classic mythology. Usually have to modify them as D&D changes most, probably so they can be copyrighted.

I never liked that Gary put wings on this creature, Chimera too. In my games both are wingless. Classic creature all the same.

Thanks for the video! Manticores attacking from above outdoors can be very tough on any level of adventuring group.

From what mythology do manticores come?

I am primarily a 1E player, but I think the 2E Monstrous Manual is one of the best D&D books published.

I prefer 1e also, 2e is okay with just the base books.

Tony - Manticores are in my top five favorite mid-tier monsters. They are a perfect blend of monstrous and formidable without being overly powered.
I boost them up with poisonous tail spikes and a roar (fear) attack.

Since it specifies that the tail spikes are treated as a light crossbow, that definitely implies that “to hit” rolls are required for each spike loosed adjusting the rolls for both range and armour class type adjustments.

      We always rolled to hit.

I was just going to mention that myself. So it's attack would pierce armor using the statistics as a light crossbow.

When you say your group is a party of 6-8th level, is that an average or that every character is at least that level?
Our group is dealing with a kind of “death spiral” scenario where we end up with a bunch of dead characters who all have to start over at level 1 and yet we are still facing the same difficulty with encounters.
We end up with a few characters that might have survived to higher levels but at least half the group is fresh 1st level characters with no magic items and a single magic user spell.

@@maecenus778 That sounds like DM incompetence & mismanagement to me. Yeah, it could be the fault of the players too, except that the DM is also responsible for that.

Generally when I say 6-8th level all the characters fall in that span.
