2nd ed AD&D material was published from 1989 to 2000. When WotC took over TSR in 1997, they discontinued the Basic & Advanced lines, consolidated everything as simply D&D, and began 3rd edition in 2000. (Edited.) 2nd edition AD&D is fully backwards compatible with 1st edition AD&D with a few minor tweaks.
