- This week we have a rather.. unusual antique sketchbook. It's Adam's Christmas present for this year and he wanted to share it with you guys. Can anyone help us make sense of what this was used for? There's a collection of all kinds of art and poetry from as far back as 100 years ago!

The horse is indeed written in shorthand! It reads 'art in shorthand' in the bottom left. At the top it might read 'The old horse'. The horse itself is written in what might be a combination of both pitman and gregg, it's really difficult to decipher either way.
And I think the music reads to never be flat (Bb), sometimes be sharp, and always be natural but I'm not that good at reading music.

I'm so interested to know the journey this sketchbook took. How it passed from one owner to the next over the decades instead if being tossed away. You have a piece of history and it's so interesting. I wanna know the people who owned it!
From what we can gather, it belonged to someone who lived in the north of England and then moved to the Isle of Wight and this is kinda of a good luck book from when they moved!
Hey! I'm not fully done watching but this seems like a "Poesiealbum", I only know the German word. My mum still had them. You give them to each of your friends and every one of your friends puts a little entry so you have memories of those people! It's very lovely. Also often the people who made the entry picked the page, parents and grandparents often just wrote in the back.
Edit: Also there was pre-written poetry of sayings you could use to put in them if you didn't have any ideas yourself.

I wish it was more of a thing in the UK too, they make such cute little memory books!
@@DoodleDate I mean it works with every small empty notebook, and I'm sure even when not knowing the concept people would be honored to do a little entry! You could start the trend again!
The difficulty is more in keeping up with it, I tried to start a few myself as a child but then kept forgetting about them 😅 This person did an amazing job at continously giving it to people close to them over the years.
My parents had notebooks like that! :D
I am Dutch and I have mine. Not sure how old you are, but it was quite a thing in the 80s. Also family members were in there, who now have passed. It is really lovely.
I had one in elementary school (early 90s Croatia) too, we called it a "remembrance book" (spomenar). They didn't look like albums though, we mostly used small locking diaries with lined pages, not ideal to draw on lol. It was a girl thing, and I'm not sure if we even asked boys to write anything in our books.
Yep the rhymes were usually not original, they were passed down.
Oh, I was surprised you didn’t know about this. When I was in school, almost everyone had a notebook like this and I’m not that old :)). I think it was very very common in past but it was still a big thing here in Czech Republic not long ago. It was called “památníček”, which means something like “memory book” in czech. You would give this to your friends, family or people you wanted to remember and they would write or draw there something for you. It was often something they wanted you to remember about them or some nice wish for your future life. The idea was that when you get older you could look back and think about people you’ve met and that may not be in your life anymore. It didn’t really matter if it was when you were leaving or not and people would often have the same “památníček” for many years, that’s why it has inconsistent dates. I have one from high school and I come back to it from time to time, it’s really nice.
We have something like that here in Poland as well We call it the same: "pamiętniczek" ^^ I still have mine somewere.
Same thing here in Germany, I probably got mine for 1st Communion in 1999 - maybe that is a bit more of a mainland Europe thing 🤔?

In 1920s America, it was common to have a guestbook in your home, where your guests would sign and leave a message. Maybe this is a guest book that they added art to?
“A jonquil in a bowl”. A jonquil is a flower. It’s a member of the narcissus family with daffodils. Technically, I think a jonquil is a type of daffodil. Jonquils usually have a stronger scent than daffodils, and I believe they have multiple blooms per stem while (IIRC) daffodils have only one. There’s also differences in the leaves, stems, and colors.
"Make new friends but keep the old" was a poem I learned in American Girl Scouts! Not sure if that's the origin though. Also, mirth is joy, particularly expressed through laughter. Myrrh was the gift to Jesus.
When I was a tiny kid, these kind of books were popular to have especially among teenagers, I think. You would lend it to the person you like and they would write a little poem, maybe make a drawing and dedication. Sometimes you would ask a friend, sometimes a cousin or sibling to decorate a page, it was not exclusively school thingy.

Yeah, they were still slightly popular in the 80s when I was a kid. Sometimes they called them an autograph album. I had one that I got from a yard sale that a few people had written in already. I wish I still had it. I remember one of the poems someone had written was, “Little Johnny loved to drink, but he will drink no more. For what he thought was H20 was H2S04.” Quite morbid. LOL

I got a blank sketchbook one year and used it as a yearbook and had everyone sign it with a drawing. That’s what this reminds me of.

It seems like something my mum used. We call it a Poesiealbum in Germany, so literally a poetry album.
You give it to your friends and they write poems or other sentiments in form of short verses in it and my mums friends also used stickers, fotos, drawings and stuff to decorate the page.
It’s really cool, I tried to fill one too but I didn’t have enough friends 😕
My grandparents were born in the 1920’s and my mother was born in the 1950’s so this doodle date video made me think of them.

I think the 3D artwork you weren’t sure what medium it was, is actually pressed flowers. I used to presses flowers a lot when I was little and they would turn out similar to that and often they would stain the pages like that. Very cool book and I’m glad you read out the entries, it was fun to listen to.
Unless you have a VERY fleshy or woody plant pressed plants are incredibly flat. Sauce: I work at a herbarium (with a quarter million pressed plants)
I agree with Andy and think it's oil paint. It can be applied very thickly and could leach oils over time. Sauce: I like to oil paint as a hobby!
Wow that was so interesting and reminded me of when I was a kid in primary school (90ies in Switzerland). We used to have so called "poetry albums" which you would give to all your friends to draw or write in it, very similar to this! There were many standard poems that people used, most of them were more on the silly side though. "Lebe lustig, lebe froh, wie die Maus im Haferstroh"... 😆 but they were only used by children as far as I remember.
... also the bird is a european kingfisher, on of the prettiest european birds!
You got a friendship book, they were popular in back in the day, they are usually full of poems, wishes or congratilatons sometimes sketches/art.
It's sad to think someone would want to sell it, but we will take good care of it

Awwww! I adore this book. My grandparents have something like this. To every birthday/wedding milestone they got similar things from cards to poems and little drawings. My mom had something like it as a „friendship“ book, where her friends would write in them for her. Something similar was big, when I was a child, where you had a book where friends could write about them, you and your friendship. It really gives me these vibes. Love the art pieces in this book. Such a treasure.
i love looking through old journals and sketchbooks! i enjoyed this video a lot... i also loved looking thru all the comments for ppl who had deciphered the poems; i could read most of the cursive but i was thrown off a couple times, especially during the "try it" poem.
The different levels of cursive is so interesting since it came from a time when the writing style was more common. Some of them are so elegant it's almost illegible. But then you have some that look like a type font, super clean but readable. And then some that look like the writer probably only used cursive for their signatures 😆
Wasn't it a tradition to have an album for giving your friends to write little things in, especially poetry?
Love the video, it is wonderful that we can enjoy something from so long ago to learn that people actually hadn"t changed a lot. Warms my heart to think of how they felt drawing the gnome with his butt exposed by a deer 😂

@@DoodleDate my grandmother has one! It was quite popular in places like France and Switzerland (where she's from) I think, and it's really nice to see another one! In hers are pictures, poetry, letters, drawings, and pieces of embroidery from her friends and family dating all the way back to the 60s
Can you imagine if the people who created for this book all got together occasionally and began with "Hi art friends" . That would be amazing

I instantly recognised that as shorthand! I used to get my grandmother to teach me - her memory isn't very good anymore so I couldn't have asked her, but its good to see other people here have the answer ^^ Definitely brings back memories of my childhood haha
20:26 - "Try It/ Just being happy/ is a fine thing to do/ Looking on the bright side,/ Rather than the blue/ Sad or sunny morning [?]/ Is largely in the choosing/ And just being happy is because [?] work and time" - This was a tough one. Not entirely sure of those two words there.
Really enjoyed looking through the album with you. I had one similar back in the late 70’s where I asked my friends/family or any interesting people I met to write in. Some just signed their name but others wrote poetry, jokes or drew pictures. Sadly I don’t know where the book is now, probably lost in one of my many house moves. This brought back some happy memories for me though so thank you.

5:26 - It says, "A thrush's song, a baby's smile, a jonquil in a bowl...". A 'jonquil' is a type of flower, apparently.

In America we have Year Books in High School with pictures and activities for the school year, we get our friends and teachers to sign them. This reminds me of something similar.

This a beautiful video. I'd get an older person to read it with you. Lots of the words that didn't make sence is because you have miss read the words. Such a lovelie gift.

This reminds me of my poetry album I had when I was small. I gave it to people to write poetry or a cute message in and to decorate the pages for me. It’s a thing lots of people used to do where I live.

I believe curds and whey is cottage cheese 👍🏻. I’ve always loved items and places that are old and have so much history behind them. Glad that people don’t throw them away

When I was a kid in the 90s, we used to have such tiny poetry albums to give to our friends and classmates for them to write or draw something in it as a memory. I bet, this book was intented for the same purpose :3
My mum has these types of albums from when she left school and various jobs in the 1950s. They used to sign each other’s albums as a keepsake
Adam has such a good poetry cadence. I could listen to a whole album of it. Also a redraw of the funky characters around 7:30 would be fun.
My grandmother has a similar book. she was born in 1929. Back then it was very common to have such an album. All their loved ones wrote or drew something in there as a keepsake.

I declare, that was so awesome! A few years ago, I tried having my fave work mates do a guest appearance in my sketchbooks. Didn't have much success with it but did get a folks to draw in one. I've amassed 50+ sketchbooks now and i have begun to wonder what will become of them when I'm gone from this mortal coil. Thanks for showing this!
The impasto flowers are a treasure but very fragile. This book is a heirloom and you are very lucky!

I love this, its so interesting. I rescued a bunch of my grandmothers stuff that my Aunt was going to throw out. I thought I was being weird, now I don’t! I used an old (unused) photo album as a sketchbook. There was a bunch of old post cards and greeting cards from the early to mid 1900’s. It’s interesting to see the old illustrations, especially the saucy and humorous ones. A lot of the post cards were from my Great great grandparents vacations. Some of the scenery on the post cards no longer excise! One was from a Great great Aunt of an accident in 1909, of a drill at the Fire Chief’s Convention in Detroit Michigan… it was a photo post card of a horse drawn fire engine, one of the poor horses fell. I use the post cards for inspiration and someday want to do a project based around them.

Back in the olden days, they had an “autograph book” where people would share a little verse they’d memorized, then sign and date. It’s probably a graduation with lots of her friends from art class. The cool part is that so many people owned it over the decades.

Omg I had one similar in middle school in early 2000 in Romania.We called them "oracol" ,we would have pages with questions that friends and school colleagues would answer and then you would give that oracle one person at a time to personalized one Page how they wanted,and they would put secret messages in the corners and fold them. Brings back memories!
One of my elderly clients who I do caretaking for has an almost identical album… hers is like a yearbook where all her classmates wrote their well wishes before moving on to another school… the penmanship & handwriting of those middle school age kids put me to shame!!!

I think you got an ancient "Poesie"-Album. We used to exchange them between friends and everyone made an entry, so you have a memory of your friends. You can include drawings, poems and we used to also glue in little printed pictures, some were even glittery. Like a Poetry-album, but it is not only poetry. I had one too.
I'm going through some pretty bad depression right now and this video really helped cheer me up and think about life and kindness.

Dorothy (the horse in shorthand) was a teacher at the school the album owner went and it looks like she was “Teacher of Commercial Subjects” ...which was secretarial skills.

14:35 - I think that says "[...] with your grief to sup [short for 'supper'], when you drink life's bitter tonic, smile across the cup". That person's "p" letter is really weird, but I think that makes sense.

The 'play up and play the game' is from a Henry Newbolt poem called 'Vitai Lampada' which is an odd thing linking schoolboy cricket and WW1 soliders mentality.

I think the music one might be referring to signs on the notes. So it would say: Flat Never , Sharp Sometimes and Always Natural.
In Germany we got - and kids still get - friendship books or poetry books, so friends can write or draw something for you in it or answer some pre-written questions ^^
also, this reminds me a lot of a yearbook, or some kind of journal that was passed down from a mother to her daughter? it's like a combination photo album and poetry book

With your grief to sup /the next word was cup-- I googled that, it's from a poem called smiles by ella wheeler Wilcox. The "one is silver and another's gold" is a poem i learned in girl scouts. I wonder if more of these are quoted poems?

the poems remind me of the friend books (they're called Poesiealbum in German....I don't know the English term) we had in school. you'd let all your friend write in them so when you'd change class or school or otherwise lost touch, you'D still remember them. sometimes people also put sticker in it or drew something small.
the poems weren't very original most of the time, but in mine my late grandmother wrote a nice text, so I still have it.
Adam seems to have some difficulties reading handwriting. :)
