I have an old book my grandmother gave me when I was like 5. I can remember going to another state to visit her with my mom. I thought we were just going to visit. I remember she was old and blind, and told me to pick something out (from her house) that I would like to have. She had lots of interesting things and I thought I was just getting a gift. I didn't know she was on home hospice, that she was going to die and wanted to leave me something. I remember picking it out and being very happy with my present. It's still on my shelf. I just finished college for writing. Funny how things become more clear as you grow up. That was the only time I got to see her, that trip. She passed while we were there. But I remember, and I love her.

any chance that your grand dad actually studied architecture or was an architect? because i'm an architecture student and we do the same thing! the details of the walls/columns/ceilings etc. especially the fact that he wrote definitions or descriptions of each drawings, architects' main medium are inks as well

    • @ivey-pz7rp
      @ivey-pz7rp 6 лет назад +24

Elisa Shay yeah that's what I was thinking too. the way he drew the lines above and below the text is like what you do when hand lettering. he may have taken a drafting/architecture class because this stuff is similar to what I do in my drafting class at school

@Orlieo _ I think what they mean is just how much art has simplified and stylized since then, today anime and cartoons are valid art forms but back then this was what was considered art. You can't really deny that comparing art back then to art now (compare your sketchbook to this one) and then take into consideration the mediums they used as well, it's definitely more finely crafted? More detailed and true to life so to speak.
I guess to op they just think its a step down from quality, they think its less impressive and truth be told, yea, its beautiful but compared to that it is less impressive, because anime is what I'm used to seeing so seeing all this old art wows me.
But ye, dont be so sensitive, this guy was just expressing their opinion, not invalidating anime as an art form. They just think anime is less impressive and if you dont agree with that its okay, you're both still valid anyway.
Edit: Thanks for coming to *my* TED talk.

I think good handwriting was actually very common back then. I do remember going to a WW2 exhibition and saw the letters. They all had amazing handwriting. Heck, just search up old letters and you'll see a ton more. It could be because they were more religious back then, because my dad told me priests would teach cursive handwriting when they were kids, although I'm not so sure about that. He's from Iran, so things could've been different there. But yeah, I just find their handwritings super interesting. I've been trying to write in cursive too lately, and it's pretty fun. I think you should do that too! :)

It's interesting. Old traditions die hard sometimes. Schools encouraged us to draw and write about whatever we drew (in art or science class. lol). ALSO, that brown paper that your granddad used to create the "pocket" was common back in the day. I'm African, and the idea (which was enforced by schools primary and secondary schools) was to use the brown wrapping paper, similar to newspaper material, preferably plain, to wrap your book covers to preserve them. This included exercise and text books. I used to do it till secondary school....which i finished in 2005. I believe my old schools still do it today. lol
Your grand dad was a great artist.

I really enjoyed this video! It's actually got me a bit on the verge of tears. Last year, my grandpa died. He was like yours in that he was really good at art even from a young age but never really pursued it as a career. He ended up being an engineer for Grumman and worked on the Apollo missions. Every year he would draw Valentine comics for his wife and kids. He loved Snoopy and the the Peanuts comics and would draw little comics of snoopy and stuff like that. He was a great man and I unfortunately didn't get to know him that well, except in the end. I had a project and we had to do it on a family member so I chose to do it on him. I had to interview him as a part of the project so I did. I learned so much about him talking to him about how he had been drawing since he was a kid, designs for cars, comics about the base he was stationed in. I learned so much that day but two days later he died. I felt like I missed out on so much and we got a lot of his old stuff like sketchbooks and looking at them made me feel closer. Thank you so much for this video and I love your channel so much. Please keep doing what you're doing it means so much.

I know this is a little different, but I have a journal from my grandpa during world war 2. He was in the navy, and it documents his experience on his ship. It’s the item I’m most proud of, and I treasure it so much. It’s so special when you have something that brings you so close to loved ones. I just had to share that on here:)

What a treasure to have something that old and to have something that was so personal from a grandparent..better than any other material gift a person could have.

I Can write neatly if I write slowly? But not that neatly lmao
Usually I write pretty quickly though so it's pretty squished and messy

This was awesome. Thank you for sharing. I imagine back then, knowing the handwriting of my grandparents (and I'm 47), they were very disciplined in schoolwork and didn't have lined paper. Handwriting was something very heavily scrutinized and taught to be very neat, east to read, and nice to look at. I think if this was his schoolwork, that was definitely something he made sure looked presentable and of course that carried on throughout his lifetime as it does for us when we use it regularly, whatever skill it is. Handwriting back then was extremely important. I'm betting if that was a sketchbook for school or for assignments, it had to be kept very neat and uniformed. Either way, he had impeccable handwriting and a beautiful eye for artistry in architecture. Us artists see things like that. We notice details the everyday passerby would miss entirely, while we whip out out pocket sketchbook and fountain pen and stop to draw it or at the very least take a bunch of pictures and go home to draw it.
How cool he recognized you'd care for his sketchbook and someday deeply appreciate the pride he took in it and what a gift it is to have and treasure and even learn from. It's a beautiful homage to him and his life and a lovely and intimate piece to remember him by. ❤️ He loved you and obviously saw the spark you had for art and the talent and dedication it takes to become great at whatever medium or style you choose. Wouldn't it be cool to sit and share your sketchbooks with him now? That's what he did with you for your lifetime to come and to enjoy it. Thank you again for sharing it with us. That's rad he made the Moleskine pocket before Moleskine was known for its pockets. Seems like a cool guy.

I hated my handwriting for a long time, so I trained myself to have better handwriting by practicing the same way one would for handlettering. It worked! My handwriting went from gross to slightly messy but sweet about 7 years ago. And I love it!

I have India ink as well. I need to buy something to use it though. This sketch book is so interesting. Also my handwriting is alright. I have a great signature though. Also nobody in my family really draws but I do. My uncle used to. And my one cousin does. I'm tempted to make a video about how I drew as a kid then how I draw now. The comparison is huge.

This is by far my favorite video you guys have made, that I have seen. I’m at or around 100 videos, I would guess. This sketchbook is a treasure!!! He was so talented. All I did as a kid was sketch Victorian era ladies and architecture for whatever reason. I mean, what 10 year old LOVES antiques and ancient architecture? We have more in common than I can say here as well. We can’t put all our private tidbits online. Love you guys and I would have loved your Grandfather so much. My ancestors are all Welsh with a tinsy bit of Scottish family.
