Meshuggah - I

- I - this fractal illusion burning away all structure toward the obscene
I - to cleanse, to purge, to breach eternity and smother all life
Blind-these mortal men of clay, divine and dying in their harassed form
I-this furnace of limitless hate. Bestial, pure
The pendulum swings semi-attached to the center of all
I drug these minds into ruin and contempt-the acid smoke of burning souls
This is an anomaly. Disabled. What is true?
Not destined for incarceration, I crave my nothingness
The illness that they whisper of, is that what makes me fail?
I see through the eyes of the of the blind
Not clear what it is to be this self I dread, the immense, the rabid I am
The cogs turn, grinding away at ceaselessness-willing it to dust
Re-disintegration. Convulse. A dead universe-Impales this twilight
Fear aligns. Sadistic me. Meant to devour. Despair
Sickened by the fact that immortality is not mine to have.
A snail along a straight razor-dividing itself through motion
I charge this feeble product of god
Laughing, drenched in the bile of millions
Chewing on the stinking flesh of the crown of creation
Solitude in splendor has been rivalled
Shroud stained with tarblack vomit
Veiling the rotting eyes of the masses
The strain of Armageddon evolves
Shifting through worlds from chaos, to chaos, to chaos
I devour this manure of existence-infertile, barren, whole
Rancid redeemer. Virulent deterioration of faith
Sacrilege in persona. In truth, fundamentally twisted
A witness to this savage carnage. A frenzy of animosity
The will to mutilate. Dominant deviation
The worship of the sick and degenerate will spread
I - The nihilist, not the lunatic
Ridding my godlike being of doubt
Obliterating all hope of escape
I - Enter the echoes of despair
Miracles inverted by default, a reflex to devastate
Soaking in the will to violate, to castrate
Soiling the purpose of mankind. Deus ex machina on hold
The orgasmic, the splendid, the beginning of the end
Conception derived from misconceptions
The dimensionless features of truth
Silence in the core of undoing
Untie its knots and set it loose
The inertia of my existence is clear
Premutation of slaughtered worlds
I alone will behold the dying sky
A servant of eternity
Progress finally, emergence of doom complete
Here only to reverse the flow of life

No one knows, how I goes.
-Thomas Haake
I know exactly how it goes from 16:28 and it's not good for the kids walking home from school. It's not the Ice Cream Truck
I've no doubt in my mind that if they played this song live and nailed the whole thing it'll go down as one of the greatest performances in music history.
Me too brother let’s make that happen......ummm somehow
1 day
As they said themselves "nobody knows how "I" goes"...
If they performed this song live, the universe wouldn't survive
It would create a black hole as its so damn heavy
Insane. So advanced. Not just "different". They have created their own environment. That's very, very rare. And by their own environment, I don't mean "djent". Meshuggah is Meshuggah. Period.Peace.
The timing, the tripped out, almost mechanical sound of dissonance. Messuggah is definetly the original. They have been around since 91... long before djent. I think Messuggah started it. I think they do it best. It's their baby... I'm not hateing, I like em both. Just timeline'ing to provide context, to support my opinion. 🤘
@Bryce Thoman before djent terms, this always was Meshuggah 😊
@Bryce Thoman They've actually been around since 1987, There's Meshuggah and then there's Djent. Nothing sounds like Meshuggah. Nothing.
Perhaps thats why they made an album named Nothing.
@Bryce Thoman lol no djent is shitty generic whiny emo pop with 8 string guitar like Periphery. Meshuggah is not in the same genre as Periphery
7:25 is verging on Death Metal. Arguably Meshuggah at their most chaotic.
10:33 This riff is the most brutal thing ever created. Period.
Best riff ever. Outstanding
My pronounce are metronome /head now 😆
Sounds like Failed Creation by Divine Heresy
5:40 is possibly the fastest I've ever heard that polyrhythm, fucking sick!
1:55 and now back to your regular messhuggah programming.
Imagine going back to 1800 and playing this full blast in front of religious people.
Or even playing it to Jebus
you mean 1980?

Lol
The drummer must be half dead by the time the song ends. Jesus Christ, how do they do all those patterns and shit?! It's beautiful, organized chaos created by musical genius.
I dont think they did, its all random, I cant find live versions either, makes it even more badass haha :p
Meshuggah drummer Tomas Haake said of the EP, "That whole track was
written and recorded just on random. Me and Fredrik would just jam on
something, and when we found something that was kind of cool, he would
walk into the control room. I would just record drums and it wasn't a
set pattern, I would just kind of stray away from the pattern, but just
keep going in that vibe. Then we had to chart everything and go bar by
bar to record the guitars afterwards, because it's all just random."
Source: Wikipedia - I (Meshuggah EP)
If they played this shit live, basically reality will collapse itself.
@iori Zechs
I think that would be a contradiction...
At least one of the members has said that it's never been performed live because no one in the band remembers how it goes due to this randomness.

Welcome back
6:19 is just all-time. The fact that the riff is just one pitch, in unison, with its bludgeoning on/off simplicity, drenched in so much rhythmic dissonance that it's basically untranscribable. I can't believe I'm alive on Earth at the same time as Meshuggah.
It literally is "all time". All time that ever was, is, and will be.
They need to make the riff at 17:00 into a 10 hour song by itself..... that groove is WAAAAAYYYYY too good to be that short, it's over before I'm able to achieve climax.
that should be the riff when people ask what meshuggah is lol
DevastatingDave reminds me of Rational Gaze
Sounds a bit like the one breakdown out of "break them bones whose.."
DevastatingDave true
This riff is so heavy/groove that my brain is melting rn
It is literally impossible to not headbang at the part at 10:33

2004, me and my whole band sat around getting blazed, and listening to this for the first time. So many rewinds, so many moments when we were just like "What the fuck? "Good memories. Great album.
Best track Meshuggah have ever composed.
totally!

Totally random
It’s up there, but clockworks or bleed would have to take the cake, but definitely top 3
@@smallshrimpin6939 I'm personally a sucker for these conceptual, random, borderline unreproducible opus magnums of songs. At least in Djent. But yeah, I can see those other songs banging hard too.
Psiloz fair enough, and I understand why, but I just personally like bleed a lot, same with clockworks, but it’s still a great song
I think Meshuggah may be the greatest extreme metal band of all time
The breakdown at 8:40 or so is
Truly epic
Less of a metal breakdown
And more of a mental breakdown
I feel like this is one of the breakdowns that actually have a pattern in it compares to the rest of the breakdowns.
@@filteredvitaminsubstance5302 i wrote it all out, it almost is completely a consistent pattern, it gets broken up a bit, but its the most uniform groove on this thing

7:07 one of the nastiest riffs I've ever heard. And that abrupt cut a minute later, christ alive! They were really on another level when they wrote this

You need to listen to prog rock
This album cover on acid is something else, I love that the interpretation of this song is basically "A black hole went insane and destroyed the universe"
8:40 Sounds like what a Meshuggah cover of YYZ would be like.
Fuck I was wondering why that sounded kinda familiar lmao.
Lmao you right
I've been listening to this for years, but it's the first time I see the lyrics. This must be the only metal track in existence that features the word "semi-attached".
13:17 - 14:05 JESUS CHRIST, this part always had me punching everything in sight LOL. Meshugah for fucking ever.
16:57 has always been one of my favorite Meshugah rhythms of all time.

This is a true work of art. I tried to listen to it last night and it made me feel genuine, deep terror. Arround 18 minutes I just couldn't take it anymore. It made me kinda paranoid, I started seeing movements in the dark and shit.
It's a masterpiece
-DGGB- meshuggah was on shuffle when I fell asleep with my headphones in and the later part of the song was playing when I woke up and I was terrified.
Something about it is just unsettling as fuck
How are y'all so terrified by this? I'm over here listening to this song at 6am because I can't sleep and I'm going through a bit of a stressful time but it's somehow making me feel better. 😂 I suppose it just depends on your mindset. If I was in more of a paranoid state of mind then it might creep me out a little bit, but I've definitely heard much creepier and unsettling stuff than this. I totally agree that it's a masterpiece though. 🤘🖤

I remember introducing one of my bandmates to Meshuggah with this around 15ish years ago. He wasn't a metalhead at all, but obviously I was. It was after jammin and smoking some bud that I played this.
At first, my buddy looked confused, but interested. Well, about 10 minutes or so into this, he had a full blown panic attack! Felt kind of bad, but couldn't help myself laughing to myself..

This was actually the first meshuggah song I ever heard. I was 15 or 16 at the time and, Im not kidding, was a completely different person the day after I first heard it.
Meshuggah is the only band that could write a 21 minute long breakdown and pass it off as a song. And I love it

Masterpiece.
This world was not ready for this ep when it came out. Even today the world is not ready. Even meshuggah cannot play this track live, but who the fuck could play this song without mistakes? Meshuggah have managed to play In Death Is Life live in it's entirety, which comes close to this masterpeice. So they are still undisputed kings of the genre they created.
