In the early 1900s, they wouldn’t have had the power to kick him off the land. They were still female. And children at the age when their mother died. If a man didn’t claim the land and live on it, the state could’ve ceased it
I can't even imagine what was going on in Netties head. She looked too shocked for words. How do you even react seeing kids you never met grown now.... 😢

I still believe the "Maybe God is Tryin' to Tell You Somethin'" scene when Shug reconciles with her father is one of the greatest moments in cinematic history. Remember when Celie was combing Shug's hair in the bathtub shortly after Shug arrived the first time? Shug talks about how her father loves her--he just doesn't know it. During that song, he remembers. It's beautiful.
Written by Alice Walker, this was required reading when I went to school. We learned all about the various black authors and reading their books was a must. I think Spielberg did a good job bring it to film. But the book was a rough read. Sadly girls were married off young and some black men, not all were marred mentally. This is just a sample of some men, but not all. But women and blacks in general life was hard, but still rise like a Phoenix despite oppression.
I was just thinking that. I haven't read it yet but I need to prepare mentally. Danny Glover was my high school graduation speaker. He's a great actor cuz I wanted to bust his face and his father's face. The cast was phenomenal. Spielberg did that. And to the Alice Walker..thank you.

Great movie review, Fix! As a person, who saw TCP, in the movie theater, live in 1985 when it 1st premiered... I am happy that younger "1st time" viewers such as yourself, also enjoyed this classic movie. (The fact that... although nominated for 11 Academy Awards that year... but this movie "won" not even 1 award, let's you realize how "things" were going down... in 1985-86! (As if... any actor in the Female category... could've deserved an award MORE, than Whoopie Goldberg's performance in a leading role, as "Celie!" C'mon now lol. But that was then... and this is now. As long as the movie exists, people will forever know and honor its existence... as one of the greatest movies of all time! (Or at least... the greatest movie, nominated for 11 Academy Awards... without winning 'nere 1!
I cry everytime I watch this show. But hear me out guys.... unfortunately Mister was a product of a nasty, ugly cycle that his dad created. A family dynamic that he tried to pass on to Harpo as well. It was all around sad. Mister was a horrible person but he did right in the end. The crazy part is I cry harder for him in the end....because he did good and possible broke the cycle and no one knew, but Shug. It gets me every time that he could push pass everything to do the right thing.
it so sad. being from and living in georgia, you know the stories. black men were made to keep their women in check back in slavery days because the Men would sometimes get beat in their place. It is generational and a whole Lot of black families Still suffer from this passed down trauma
Nettie is an actual African Princess. And you did see Shug go to the church and speak to her father who ignored her. It happened when she just arrived to town. You did see it.
I turned 14 in October of 1985, I had already seen the first 5 Friday the 13th movies by the time you were born, now I officially feel old, still love your channel bro.

Most people don't catch that the immigration letter to try to get Nettie, Celie's kids, and Celie's daughter-in-law to the United States came right after Albert (Mister), heard Shug in the church singing "God's trying to tell you something"....Mister got the message...
Stephen Spielberg didn't want to do the movie at first, as a white man. But Quincy Jones talked him into it. Danny Glover struggled playing such a horrible person.
The saddest part about this movie the themes of racism, sexism, colonialism, toxic marriages, dysfunctional families, and personal despair in this movie still exist in 2024

A single mother in New York on welfare, going through the trials n tribulations of being a maid and trying to make a relationship work, while raising her young teens and adolescent children. One of the baddest soundtracks in cinema in my opinion. It's funny, heartwarming, and slick, all rolled in one. Check it out.😊

I stopped reading the book. The diary entries were filled with so much hate and disdain that I couldn’t finish it.

I would consider Corrina Corrina a more dramatic role. Loved that one with Ray Liotta. Whoopi could do no wrong in the 90s.
