  • (28 Jan 1977) RR7704B UK ULSTER PATROLLING CROSSMAGLEN
The British government maintains 14,000 troops in
Northern Ireland to keep the peace between Protestants
and Catholics, loyalists to the United Kingdom and those
who want to sever Ulster's constitutional links with
mainland Britain. The job of the soldiers is a
dangerous one - already this year three have died
and in 1972 some 130 were killed by terrorists'
bombs, booby-traps and gunmen. This item looks at
the work of the Royal Highland Fusiliers detachment
    at Crossmaglen, the front line.

What gets me is your man saying how can you just murder men like this talking about the soldiers But they have been doing it to the Irish for decades. I don’t think any man woman or child should be murdered but it’s no big deal to them when a catholic gets brutally murdered but when it’s one of there own all of a sudden it’s barbaric. It ain’t no fun when the rabbits got the gun. I lost good friends in school from this war young innocent children. It wasn't even supposed to be in Northern Ireland, it was not included in the first 2 original partition maps drawn up I don't think.

I was there in 1987 (B Coy, 1 Royal Hampshire). The towers were up by then. My 4th tour. I remember hard-targeting from the RUC station. As I recall the South Armagh tour was alternating rifle coys between rural patrolling from BBK via Lynx (were we mortared there as my brick were taking off in a Lynx). I saw lads hit and fall but soon we were gone down to the border to dropped off. Then there was time in the Golf towers. Finally patrolling XMG. Despite losses and seeing friends lose body parts, I enjoyed it. If you’re a pro footballer you want to get on the pitch. My hardest tour was Fermanagh in 1982 as the Falklands was kicking off. 1 Para took over from us but teased us saying ‘stag on’ because they were sure they’d go down south. I finished my year with Recce pln (formerly COP) on South Georgia.

They did they just made more enemies. It was completely unnecessary conflict. The only thing they had to do was keep the peace. The nationalists treated them well and welcomed them. It’s when they started helping loyalist mobs burn down nationalist homes, the welcome mat was taken away. Besides if Bloody Sunday was a recruitment tool for the provos can you imagine wide spread killing of Irish civies on a huge scale would have had the Irish people on mass enlisting either in the provos or the Irish army, all intelligence from the republic would have been stopped and it’s very likely the public outcry would have resulted into an even more brutal ground war and made things thousands of times worse than they were.

Then it may or may not be your property after that depending on how things go. If Brexit goes sour people will be itching to leave. At any rate, there will be changes.

Ya see if I'm not mistaken, this same regiment probably these same borstal boys helping to hold down the victims , were involved in what became known, the pitchfork murders of two guys , Michael Naan and Andrew Murray.
Sgt Stan Hathaway, Cpl Forrester Sgt Chestnut, Cpt Snowball, etc ,etc it went right up the ranks.
Person's unknown were of course said to have been responsible, with heavy inference on loyalists. Only when one of the regiment listened to the Wearside Jack , bogus Yorkshire ripper tape , he was convinced it sounded like Hathaway, undeniably a Psychopath ,who he'd been on tour with , he went to the cops in Glasgow , probably looking a reward and was physically thrown out of two separate stations.
Only for a Savvy journalist at a Glasgow newspaper it would , like so many hundreds of others, have ended at that.
It seems at the beginning of the tour the entire platoon were shown Naans photo and details and that he was to be treated, appropriately, having earlier been involved in the civil rights movement.
It went higher than Snowball of course but he was offered a non custodial, with pension in tact no doubt. If you look closely at these individuals you can tell the half of them are unhinged.

@ Mathew Mathews. Exactly , the planters were for the best part a criminal class, cattle and sheep rustlers many of whom could not speak English in a way that someone in let’s say London would recognize they were viewed as undesirables and sending them to Ireland was seen as killing two birds with the one stone, removing a criminal class population and giving them a landlord status in return ,cooperation in subjugating the natives and if you study them I’m confident you will agree that evolution has passed them by.

Whisper it, but the Irish economy is booming again, with unemployment expected to dip below 5.5pc this year and GDP forecast to grow by around 4pc. With the recovery come challenges. Housing remains a considerable problem the Government must tackle, while many experts have also warned of the risk of overheating. Brexit also looms large. Five prominent economists give their take on 2018. www.independent.ie/business/irish/the-economy-in-2018-the-expert-view-36456511.html
You can read here what 5 leading economists have to say. Or let me save you the bother by telling you the bottom line. You are full of shit. The Irish economy presently is outperforming the UK economy but that wouldn't be hard. Just wait for the consequences of the likely no deal Brexit to kick in and you learn what it is to live in a failed economy. Maybe you can do what you did in 1973 and go to the IMF for a bailout.

    • @rapier1954

IMF says UK has a debt that is 87.02% of GDP while Ireland's is only 68.52% en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_public_debt So the UK isn't exactly the land of milk and honey is it ?????????????
