This is the greatest race ever. Chavic and , Phelps really stepped up their game. Both are incredible swimmers. 1/100th of a second that is a close finish. Hats off to both these young men.
The intuition to add a big up kick at the end of a long finish is what won him the race. Most people there know they're at a long finish but just try to stay tight and reduce drag. Phelps gives a big up kick for an extra bit of propulsion to get him to the wall, keeps his speed up and makes it to the wall faster. Incredible
NBA star Maurice Lucas, who played in the late 70s and into the 80s, was a fabulous natural swimmer. He swam competitively as a kid but as an adult, without working out, could still go around 50 for 100 yard freestyle. That's a fast time for a guy who stays in shape playing basketball!
his tech and power output definitely upped... THE RACE CLUB... environment was there and he had a desire to become that fast... therefore he IS THAT FAST!
No way Crocker gave it up. These guys have spent their entire lives training for three of four races that happen every couple years. No one gives up a gold medal.
@Skullkids93 so hes 18, if he peaks at about age 23-25 he might just make it onto the national team but i know Denmark have quite a strong team. my mate did 23.2 long course metres and got onto the British team but he retired from swimming a couple of years ago, so back when he did that time it was just enough to get him on. but he still never got picked for the world championships or olympics, just a few minor competitions
ow if he does it once he does it again, he beat crocker in 04 olympics and he does it again, and he beat cavic in 08 and in 09 WCs, he did it again. This is also like a mirror of 08, crocker does a long glide while phelps does a shorter stroke.
I feel nervous for Phelps on his 100m butterfly against Crocker. Crocker has the record, and I really want Phelps to win. But I don't know if he's gonna make it after so many races. Don't know what you guys think.
Phelps was a great sport though...he gave the 4x100 medley fly spot to Ian Crocker because he wanted Crocker to win at least a gold medal. Phelps could've tied the record for 7 golds in one games, but he figured you know what 6 is good enough. Great champion!
I swim about 8 hours a week (off-season) and play World of warcraft whenever im not swimming or studying. And I am very good at WoW. So I am a gamer, and a competitive swimmer.
i know what a 100 and a 50 is, i'm a swimmer,i was asking 23Kingsolomon if they were swimming in a 25 m pool or a 50m pool because that can make a huge difference due to the fact that in a 25 m pool, you do a flip turn. i wasn't actually talking about the video, because yes, that is a 50 m pool.
this isn't the beijing olympics, it's athens 2004. in beijing, phelps beat cavic, not crocker. last night crocker lost the bronze by 0.01 seconds. also, the announcer says phelps just got his "sixth," but last night against cavic he won his seventh.
@Skullkids93 wow very nice! so your a 1500 swimmer? i like 1500 but im not very good at it :( ive done it twice at our club championships now, last year i did 21.37 and this year 20.14. i should have been able to go under 20 but i blew it by sprinting at the start going out on 1.11 for the first 100, woops :P i bet you do about 16 mins to make the youth olympics?
our argument is like saying "Running is a farce because there is a large number of events and they're all the same". I'm sorry but there is just as much difference between a 200m and 400m swimming event as there is between a 100m and 400m running event. Thorpe is one of my idols, but does not match to Phelps. However, they're in different events. It's like comparing a sprinter to a middle distance runner. The suits shave 100ths of seconds off - hardly massive cuts.
@Skullkids93 haha, i wouldnt be :) but i bet you're still going to improve loads, and that time would be a world record in 1966 so your doing pretty good in my opinion :)
Crocker to get back at Phelps for beating him earlier, jumped early in 400 meter medley relay prelim, and the US team was disqualified. Costing Phelps a shot at a world record 8 medals.
if you swam you'd be able to tell the dif between a 25m and a 50m... you think it'd take 23 seconds for them to swim a 25? and they have short course championships for world-classed swimmers too...just that its not really publicized lastly you cant flip for fly :)
My best timing when I was in Germany national arena was timed 0.7 seconds slower than Michael Phelps best time for 100 freestyle !! That is LESS than a second slower than mighty Phelps and I never take any chemicals like he surely does.
dang bro! whats your time now? oh, and i half lied. i havent swam individual 100m free in about a year, but i did swim 400m relay, but that was all after the 200 medley relay, the 400m individual, and the 100m back : /
excuse me "WishForErin" The USA has ALWAYS dominated swimming since the 1920's. America has 215 golds in Olympic history against like 49 golds of Australia. The USA has had awesome swimmers: like Matt Biondi, Mark Spitz, Aaron Peirsol, John Naber, Rodney Gaines, Phelps, Johnny Weismuller, etc. The USA always finishes first in swimming in worlds and Olympic games. It's an american tradition.
yeah... 25m fly i swim like 11.9 for the 25m dive and then the second half i swim like a 12.8 and not trying to boast by my turns are probs the best aspect of my swimming and better than my dive
I agree it is your talent, but it's the fact that you have such a large population to draw from in order to find that talent. Any country that has over 300 million people is damn well guaranteed to win themselves some gold medals. If Canada had that many people, than we would find ourselves in domination as well.
watching michael swim is a real treat! he makes it look...easy, which it definitely is not!
michael's last 50 meters is always amazing to watch.
he just did it again to day at Beijing, the perfect last stroke.
And again in Rome, he does it slot, only one that got him was Le Clos in 200fly in London
phelps is just amazing!
Ian Crocker is my coach!
hadi lan ordan yalancı
Phelps and Crocker are amazing, but I'm proud about Subirats, he's a great swimmer and every day is getting better
This is the greatest race ever. Chavic and , Phelps really stepped up their game. Both are incredible swimmers. 1/100th of a second that is a close finish.

wow I did not know that. I swam competitively up until I was 20. I loved it and it was the best times of my life.
this was last year's world championship.
if you notice the post date.
Phelps one of the best swimmers in the world there is no one that can beat him.
phelps is a monster at butterfly :)
his tech and power output definitely upped... THE RACE CLUB... environment was there and he had a desire to become that fast... therefore he IS THAT FAST!
@iheartsinging65 50m. 100m divided by 2 lengths is 50. bty, pools are always 50m for actual races
i think its right there with phelps´record...both record are out of this world
No way Crocker gave it up. These guys have spent their entire lives training for three of four races that happen every couple years. No one gives up a gold medal.
@23Kingsolomon yeah, but what's the length of the pool?? is it a 50 m or 25 m/yards?
not sure, but if you are referring to the 100 fly at bejing, this happened before that
What about Subirats in third? this guy keeps getting better!
I'm not a swimming fan, but I love sports overall. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Phelps won the race with his last two strides or whatever you call it.
Strokes

@Skullkids93 yeah, could be true, but either way it has to be less than 50 yards or metres or he would be national level
Micheal Phelps = beast .
Nuff' said.
ow if he does it once he does it again, he beat crocker in 04 olympics and he does it again, and he beat cavic in 08 and in 09 WCs, he did it again. This is also like a mirror of 08, crocker does a long glide while phelps does a shorter stroke.
@Skullkids93 ouch, 1 second on a 1500. thats gotta be annoying :( was that long course or short course?
Bronze medalists has badass name.
@element509 thanks man
LEGEND
you're a swim team?!? I'm impressed
Yeah, I'm so glad that it's obviously worked out so brilliantly for you - your name is up in lights in the footballing world for sure, big boy! lol
This comment section is ancient

@TibyExtream short yards? and what country?
does puttsing around at the ymca doing doggy paddle count?

its all about the touch

@lizblueguess it def wasn't Athens, Civic and Suberats weren't around in 2004. This was world Championships, my guess is 2007?
cant really see from up top. need to check the underwater cams.. from up top looks like crocker came first.
@SKATEPASSION97 What's the first 11 year old?
@Skullkids93 wow very nice! so your a 1500 swimmer? i like 1500 but im not very good at it :( ive done it twice at our club championships now, last year i did 21.37 and this year 20.14. i should have been able to go under 20 but i blew it by sprinting at the start going out on 1.11 for the first 100, woops :P i bet you do about 16 mins to make the youth olympics?
can anyone tell me where is ian crocker now? :D why wasn't he competing in rome 09?
It's true, last October in Munich, Germany my 100 freestyle time was only 0.7 seconds slower than Phelps best 100 m time.
was this the one where phelps beat crocker by 0.01 seconds? or was that another race
Phelps just got a 49.82!
May I ask what the 9-year old's name is?
our argument is like saying "Running is a farce because there is a large number of events and they're all the same". I'm sorry but there is just as much difference between a 200m and 400m swimming event as there is between a 100m and 400m running event.

lastly
you cant flip for fly :)
but you swam before you swam with a team right?
Tell me how it`s possible?
Phelps is great.
My best timing when I was in Germany national arena was timed 0.7 seconds slower than Michael Phelps best time for 100 freestyle !! That is LESS than a second slower than mighty Phelps and I never take any chemicals like he surely does.
Um no- how could this be in beiging yet it was posted here over a year ago? He has done the same thing here again in beging
I do a 7:58 LCM 800 fly but I'm only 2 days old so plenty of time to improve before the next olympics
You're right. FINA World Championships ARE every 4 years.
dang bro! whats your time now?
oh, and i half lied. i havent swam individual 100m free in about a year, but i did swim 400m relay, but that was all after the 200 medley relay, the 400m individual, and the 100m back : /
this is like his 100 fly in the olympics
Mis respetos para el hermano venezolano
How did pheeeelps won that?
The DBU Christmas Special is Tomorrow!
Check It Out!

I meant the Servian. Not Crocker.
yeah in swimming best athlete ever shaun white
this guy is fucking amazing
so you've only been swimming for 3 years and you can do the 50 free in 26.4?
his win was so unanticipated, the camera guy had to run over to lane 6 lol
yeah... 25m fly i swim like 11.9 for the 25m dive and then the second half i swim like a 12.8 and not trying to boast by my turns are probs the best aspect of my swimming and better than my dive
Phelps' 200 fly will stay for at least a decade.
who doesn't?
and crocker's career went down the shitter after this race
lol mavering you got it right, Phelps is a true great
49.82 is the current world record
Who came in 3rd?
wanna know something? I swim the 50 free on 23.9 and my main sport is basketball
he wasnt high while he was doing the olympics that was amonths away
sooo beautiful. im just glad he showed that guy up, from what i hear he was talking a storm of shit about phelps lol.
KInda funny its not the first time a race of his was that close :)
My bad that happened in 04 Games!
0.37 is a long damn way in 100 meters
I like Ians Fly better than Phelps...too bad ian lost...ian is my idol..hope Ian breaks his 50.40 record.
RIP Headphone users.
?why
If he had timed that turn perfectly (he had to do a short stroke) Crocker definitely would have been right at his 50.4.
so amazing.. he was so lucky.. because crocket was supposed to win that one. wow
yes there is, you just cant see it they both lost just deal with it
in the 200 you mean, a 1:49 in the 100 meter fly would mean hed have to have broken his leg while stepping up to the block lol.
why the hell would someone hate swimming? o.O
i like swimming, i love it, i don't do it professional, but i like to swim when i have a chance
There was .04 difference in time, it is done electronically, Phelps touched first...
everything counts! What does that even mean?? He deserved to win 'cause he reacted and got first!
@GWALT1012 & short course ;)
Dude was only 19!!!!!
i reckon we'll see a 1.49 at beijing
i feel bad for the water
ive always felt sorry for the people on the outside, their swim are all super fast, but they still dont get any recognition
@TibyExtream thats a terrible swimming country. Is it USA. In USA the 4th place 1fly for 13 year olds is a :56. Im 13 and i have a 1:02
@SuperClark18 i no!!!!!!!!!!!!
.....And then....I woke up...
