  • Adagio sostenuto, first movement from Piano Sonata No. 14, Op. 27/2 "Quasi una Fantasia" (Like a Fantasy) / "Moonlight"
    Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano
The Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German), was completed in 1801. It is rumored to be dedicated to his pupil, 17-year-old Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, with whom Beethoven was, or had been, in love. The name "Moonlight" Sonata derives from an 1832 description of the first movement by music critic Ludwig Rellstab, who compared it to moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. Beethoven included the phrase "Quasi una fantasia" in the title partly because the sonata does not follow the traditional sonata pattern where the first movement is in regular sonata form, and where the three or four movements are arranged in a fast-slow-[fast]-fast sequence. Instead, the Moonlight sonata possesses an end-weighted trajectory; the climax is held off until the third movement. To be sure, the deviation from traditional sonata form is intentional. In his analysis of the Moonlight sonata, German critic Paul Bekker states that The opening sonata-allegro movement gave the work a definite character from the beginningwhich succeeding movements could supplement but not change. Beethoven rebelled against this determinative quality in the first movement. He wanted a prelude, an introduction, not a proposition. By placing the most dramatic form (sonata form) at the end of the piece, Beethoven could magnify the drama inherent in the form. The first movement, in C-sharp minor is written in a rough, truncated sonata form. The movement opens with an octave in the left hand and a triplet figuration in the right. A melody that Hector Berlioz called a "lamentation", mostly by the right hand, is played against an accompanying ostinato triplet rhythm, simultaneously played by the right hand. The movement is played pianissimo or "very quietly", and the loudest it gets is mezzo-forte or "moderately loud". The movement has made a powerful impression on many listeners; for instance, Berlioz wrote that it "is one of those poems that human language does not know how to qualify." The work was very popular in Beethoven's day, to the point of exasperating the composer, who remarked to Carl Czerny, "Surely I've written better things."
Quoted from Edmund Morris' "Beethoven: The Universal Composer"
    Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)

I'll never forget those wonderful days when my father played this piece so beautifully when I was a youngster - I would sit on the floor and rest my head against his piano - and he would gently smile at me as he played..........a refined gentleman he was, through and through.

This was my favorite piece of classical music to listen to, and play. I played it well when I was younger. Quit the piano. Always regretted it. Maybe this will light the spark to get back. Thank you for this!

its 3 years later but dont quit. Even if you don't hve a piano you can buy a relatively cheap electric keyboard. It doesn't have the same touch but the finger movements carry over to a real piano. Bonus: you can plug headphones into it and practice any time of day

Having just listened to Horowitz play this movement, I find Ashkenazi's interpretation in this particular recording smoother, where each note holds its own. It is suspenseful and immersive at once, elegant and sad.

I'm an amateur. When I was 16 (60 years ago) I had just memorized the Maple Leaf Rag --ALL of which is written in 4-5 flats! Then I decided to learn the Moonlight Sonata -- it's written in 4 sharps! With no teacher I still can't believe I somehow managed this. I can still play them both today. My dog seems to enjoy it.

I disagree with your disagreement. To say that it's simple is a flaw is pretty outrageous, considering how long this piece has survived as opposed to other pieces. The simplicity is what makes this piece so recognizable and enjoyable for a non-musician, as opposed to something that's flying all over the place. This is also why children folk songs are so popular and remembered and last the ages, unlike music in today's age. This is just my opinion, though.

"What can I do now with this broken heart?
When all I wanted was to give it to someone?
How can I get up when I fell so hard?
And the one I fell for is in someone else's arms
So maybe I don't know what I want
    Maybe I'm crazy
Maybe I'm right to just give up
But that's better said than done
    When I'm made for love
    Yeah, I'm made for love
    I'm made for love
But I see that this time maybe love's not made for me
I'm maybe young but I am old enough
To know that Fairy tales don't always come true
It's time to admit that what is done is done
So I'm moving on because I'm not the one with you
Yeah, maybe I don't know what I want
    Maybe I'm crazy
Maybe I'm right to just give up
But that's better said than done
    When I'm made for love
    Yeah, made for love
    I'm made for love
But I see that this time maybe love's not made for me
    I'm made for love
    Made for love
    Made for love"

I'm not talking about professional musicians and what they enjoy, I'm talking about the guy on the street who doesn't know the difference between a trombone and a lampshade. (No offence to trombonists.) Ultimately, isn't one of the greatest things about music getting an astonished reaction from someone who never played it and having them tell you it was fantastic? Because it's simple isn't why it survived, yes, but I'm sure it helps for those who only hear it once or twice and then forget.

@Jessicaisrealawesome Being a freshman doesn't mean that you have to be good. Part of being a musician is developing your skills and expanding your repetoire. All musicians are good in some area and weak in another, but it's how they respond to that weakness that makes them good.

@jhcmusic something tell me that Vladimir Ashkenazy wouldn't be searching for any notes, if anything, everything that he plays he plays for a reason. He is no mediocre player, though not my favorite pianist, I'm can say with certainty that he is not playing 'out of time' if classical music from this era had specific timing.

@FerranK68 you can be a music lover even if you don't like this type of music. i dont remember back to when i was 6. i think of music as the personality of the artist in sound form. a pattern of unlimited combination of pitch, rythm, layers and types of sounds. what is a bendition?

With him stretching the dotted eigth sixteenth note figure every time it comes up in the piece, it steps on the whole meaning of the piece. That's the death toll. Should be rock solid and certain as death is certain and not out of time as played here.
