Wainwright's COAST to COAST #1 - Hike the days, Camp the nights - St Bees to Shap

- 190 miles and 28,000 feet of ascent, that is what it takes to follow in the footsteps of Alfred Wainwright on his Coast to Coast walk which he completed in 1972. Starting in St Bees on the west coast of England we endeavour to complete our journey by arriving in Robin Hoods Bay in 12 days.

My daughter and I, had chosen late July early August for this transverse in the hope that the weather would be reasonable. However, the weather gods had decided to share one of the worst summers on record, severe weather warnings seemed to be the norm for our journey.
As will be seen in the videos this did not curtail our ambition, we still did a number of nights wild camping but also varied our experience by using pub gardens the YHA and other great campsites. This was also a great chance to test our individual solo tents which included the Nero OSMO Hornet tent and the MSR Hubba Nx Tent.
The first video covers the 64 mile challenge we encounter through the Lakes District from St Bees to Shap.
Oh my...I think this is one to settle down later with a cup of tea and watch!

Fantastic start. I’ve walked the C2C twice, still goes down as my favourite. Nothing has bettered it yet. Fingers crossed for a third crossing… in between other long distance trails.

I backpacked the C2C last year. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and I hope you did too. How about the Cape Wrath Trail at some point???
Certainly did enjoy it , weather was crap for the time of year, but I think everyone has suffered this year. Maybe one day for the CWT, so many trails and not enough time, the kind of dilemma to have. Hope you enjoy the series and thanks for watching.

I have enjoyed watching your video but I have a question. Was it really smooth as you have shown or you had some difficulties? I would love to see the struggle and how you resole your issues ie: did you use your maps to check the route, how about water? where did you cook your food in the camps? How much food you picked up with you?
Thanks for your thoughtful comment, you have certainly made me stop and consider all the aspects of this video and previous videos that I have done. When difficulties or disasters happen I do tend to show these or at least talk about them if I don’t capture the moment on film. A good example is on Lycian way series of videos, lost my tent poles and knocked myself out on a tree branch in a foreign country. Most of the time in the UK, 50 years of experience saves me from those kind of problems. However, I appreciate the vlog style of what you are saying and wondered if there is a video in the trekking world that demonstrates your viewpoint. Looking forward to watching the rest of these videos - walked the route in Sep 22 so reliving the walk by watching these. Can I ask ? Did I spot a slight continuity error? Immediately after the section on the Moor Row statue you show a section crossing a small foot bridge but I think you'd passed that not long after passing under the railway? A bit of local knowledge as I live in Whitehaven and that bit of the route is the way I sometimes walk if I am going to/from St Bees to home.
Hi Richard, out on the trails at the moment, so taken me some while to find good connection to review the part you mention. As you can imagine I capture literally hundreds of clips on a hike of this magnitude and have a system for trying to maintain the continuity into editing. I think from briefly reviewing the video those two clips have been reversed in editing. Therefore, yes I believe you to be totally correct and thank you for spotting this error and providing your local insight. Hope you’ve enjoyed the rest of the series, cheers Nigel
