Sinc this ending would practically put an end to the story, they decided to re-shoot it with a new scene that could be considered as cliffhanger. Brenda lizbeth Lopez, yes. Heather O’Rourke died from medical malpractice, during a routine surgery to fix her intestinal problem on February 1, 1988, right after the director shot the last scene for the Poltergeist 3 movie. This all took place during a break from filming. The director wasn’t satisfied with the original ending, so reshot it, which is shown in the Poltergeist 3 film. Everybody was heartbroken over Heather O’Rourke’s death and barely got through the redone last scene, which is why you can’t see Heather O’Rourke’s face, because it’s a stunt double. The actor who played as Scott, who later explained what had really happened when the director had previously lied by saying there was no original, secret ending scene, couldn’t make it for the reshooting, due to time constraints with another project he was working on at the time. Nobody wanted to have anything to do with the film, however, the bosses of the director demanded that he pay back the money he had owed the MGM company for making the film in the first place. This is why we now have Poltergeist 3 the way it is.

Not sure why they didn’t use this cut. We never actually find out what happened with Scott in the theatrical version. They could have used this one. We also get to see Heather’s face one final time as opposed to a fake body being held by Pat. This ending is much better.
Also why was Kane allowed to go back into the light? The man was a puritanical doomsday preacher who killed an entire congregation of people. He doesn’t deserve a happy ending. The people he killed do. Tangena should be leading them into the light.

    • @lonelyone

According to Wikipedia, the original ending had a different fate for Kane:
"Kane puts his hand on the necklace, but instead of ascending, his face cracks and he explodes. The blast frees everyone, but annihilates Tangina and causes a violent thunderstorm. Patricia, Carol Anne, Donna, Scott and Bruce finally leave the mirror dimension. Carol Anne sees a reflection of smiling Tangina in the mirror who waves at them and sheds a tear."
Not sure if this was ever filmed, but it would have been better than Tangina leading him into the light.

The Beast sees his skilled verbosity and preaching as a tool to lure Carol Anne back into the realm of the dead. Then you play the ending of the second one out the same way except we see The Beast (Only a bit so that the audience's imagination can fill in the gap) in the background watching as Kane snatches Carol Anne away from her family in The Neitherealm. Then when Steven spears Kane, The Beast pulls Kane back and tries one more time to kidnap Carol Anne until she is saved by the spirit of her grandmother.

Poltergeist 3 was such an unworthy sequel that should never have been made. Poltergeist 2 already had the perfect, epic ending. Steven thrusts Taylor’s spear into the Beast, forcing it to release all the unrestful spirits and banishing it forever. The spirits clung to Carol-Anne as she floated away - into the light. There was a bitter sense of irony the she ended up leading them all there, seemingly lost forever, yet still fulfilling her destiny. But then was then brought back into the arms of her family by her angelic grandmother who had made a promise to be there when they needed her the most. All elevated by Jerry Goldsmith’s beautiful music.

The actress playing Carol Anne had already died months before this film was released in theater. That alone killed any chance of there being a 4th film (who would want to see a Poltergeist IV that didn’t include Carol Anne?) so ending this film on a cliffhanger makes no sense

Just to see Heather O'Rourke at the end instead of a double was satisfying. All of them were together and they looked happy. I understand why this film gets a lot of hate and is polarizing but it's more frightening to be in a building as opposed to a neighborhood, in my opinion. Definitely gives it that spooky vibe.

Apparently the original ending script, Carol Anne was supposed to have died in the end, but that was changed after Heather died, it’s why there is so much mystery about the reshoot, this is explained by Heather’s sister Tammy in Fancounters, episode 62
Somewhere out there is the original ending where Carol Anne dies

The early script pages or the complete ones literally do not include that, she was likely mistaken by the frozen carol anne which was in the script.

should have stuck with this ending, would not fix the movies problems, but its a better final scene for Heather than what they ended up doing, where we dont even see her face and the boyfriend is never seen again.
