    Howboutcha Hank , I would go with the 2wd That’s all we had on the farm. They worked great, even with a loader, the front tires were the same with the center rib, and when you had to turn with a load on the front just had to use a little assistance from the right or left brake pedal.... God Bless, Terry

      Good point Terry. Derrick actually talked about using independent braking, ,but I had to edit that part out because of some technical difficulties. Thanks for commenting. God bless!

    Awesome video as usual, I love my 4550 4wd and has been great on farm with plowing, disc, pulling corn planter, Bush hog, now at 150 hrs no problems. I still have my older 2wd that is my choice for most Bush hog work and blade work. 4wd is useful in loader operation and on hillside work in which I do a lot of.

    I considered 2wd. My bx2200 was so light I HAD to use 4x4 almost all the time. I thought a heavy tractor wouldn't need it except for mud. I'm glad the group talked me into 4x4

    I have the same tractor, I did swap out the front wheels and tires to wider. Made a big difference lifting 2500 lb pallets. Great machine, 4wd would have been nice but have really never needed it. Like he said, hard to get stuck with a loader.

      I just measured the max back spacing and took a wheel and tire with me to the co-op. They have a reversible rim that did the job and the tire is just a steer tire that they had in stock. It's way wider and slightly taller. Don't know how to put a picture .

    Have had a 4540 for almost a year now in Texas Hill Country. My MF finally gave up and I went shopping. I found Deere and Kubota WAY overpriced. MF was better, but still several thou more. I bought 4540 because it is an older, more mature design and simpler. 4WD is hydrostatic front wheel drive and adds whole new dimension of complexity for maintenance and repairs, not just up-front price. If you need it, you need it. I am very happy with 4540 2WD. I ESPECIALLY like quick change skid steer front end. Have always had a bucket loader, but am now in love with pallet forks. M2c

    Does that Mahindra have separate rear brakes to help make turns? That's really the only reason I can see not to buy 4wd these days. Had a Ford 2610 & MF 35, you could whip them around using the brake when bush hogging & road repair. Neither had a bucket on the front.My new MF GC1705 4WD R4s with loader is way more modern & much smoother, couldn't imagine using the loader without 4WD. Although, as low as the GC is, I would have taken the 2610 in muddier places with full Ag tires than I'd take the GC. Much more clearance underneath.

    Hank, I have been watching severa of yourl videos. I have been considering a 4540 4x4, with loader and backhoe. You asked about a backhoe on the 2wd. You mentioned possibly a 3pt hoe. A 3 pt backhoe puts a lot of stress on the tractor itself. Depending how much use ore hoe rough the work is... it could break a tractor in half or at least cause damage. I would never use or buy a 3pt backhoe. A backhoe should always be mounted on a sub frame (some call it a sled) this is sub frame is mounted to the tractor, which displaces the stress on the tractor frame or bolts. Of course the backhoe mounts on the subframe.

    Lots of people have two wheel drive tractors and put heavy duty chains for extra traction . They have there advantages for certain things like you said turning sharp Ploughing etc . For the average hobby farm there great . I must admit though after having four wheel drive tractors for over thirty years I dont think I could go back . Ok so when do I get too see the 50 hp cab 4x4 review 😂 . I have been staying away from my dealer . I need some motivation too go spend some money too stay warm this winter 😬 .I still think you look like a Mahindra sales guy with those sun glasses 😂. Good review Hank 👍

    If it doesn't have a loader I prefer 2wd. I mostly do small scale hay and if it's too wet for my 2wd then I probably shouldn't be in it. I've done some acres tilling food plots with 2wd and understand how other operations might gain from it. IMO, gently used 2wd tractors are some of the best buys on the market because they deprecate quicker, and cost less from the start.

    I prefer the 4wd Kubota Grand 60 series tractors. My dad has a MF 383 and a MF 275, both 2wd. He wishes that the 383 was 4wd since it has a loader on it. So far this year, I have only had to pull him out once with my Kubota. Although comparing my Kubota to his two tractors isn't a fair comparison since both of his our larger than my Kubota L3560HSTC. Yet, mine being 4wd and lighter has allowed me to get into places where his bigger tractors just sink down (we have been doing work around the creek bottom and it has been a wet year). As it was pointed out in your video, if you know the limitations of your tractor and work within them, you are going to be successful. If you don't work within them, just make sure you have a second tractor to pull you out. :)

    • @HamiltonvilleFarm
      @HamiltonvilleFarm  5 лет назад

      Yeah thats right. Those Kubota's are strong machines for sure. Good thing dad has you to pull him out when he gets stuck👍

  • @pennylessplantation
    @pennylessplantation 5 лет назад +1

    My 2 cents on it is maybe without a FEL but front weights instead cutting hay/rough cutting in a pulling type role on flatter land seems more suitable. Guessing a FEL is okay on flat ground just on an as needed occasion is okay with 2wd. That FEL would be hard on that front end if continuously used. Better suited for 4wd. Otherwise a 2wd has many applications.

      I just bought a used 2018 4540 4wd with a loader, box blade and bush hog with 300 hours on it for $17,000. I needed it for a Lane Shark so I also added their third function kit, and those 2 added another $7k to it. So I'm in it for 24 and have about a mile of roads with trees to trim, and 3 miles of fence lines to maintain. I'm told once I find the gear that works best for that job it will take me hours instead of days🤷🏻‍♂️

    Sliding Mesh Trans are Proven and will do the job they are just not as user friendy in the long run but any good operator will make them work well . I am suprised that hes got a 2 wheel drive tractor and not one with Front assist like most are . In my applications of heavy large acre work its no contest the 4 wheels will avg a good 1 mph faster which results in more work done and less fuel burned since all of todays tractors are designed to be 4 by 4. And up til about 20 years ago most 4 wheel drive tractors did not work well in Row crops . But if you look at the tractors made today they have figured out a lot to make them track rows. They raised engines to sit up higher and also made the Front Radiator sit ahead of the front wheels for better Turning and weight Dist plus most frames were sculpted for the wheels to turn in the frame without rubbing
