How to use Beat Jump like a PRO DJ!

- Beat jump is such an underrated feature that a few DJ’s really understand and use. It’s basically a feature that allows you to structure your tracks fast, make up for lost timing and even skip sections in a track.
In this video, I explain the basics on how to use it on Rekordbox DJ, Serato, and Traktor. Then later on, I’ll proceed to teach you how I personally use beat jump to prepare and DJ.

Beat jump is a feature that allows you to either jump forward or backwards in your track by a pre-determined amount.
So if you wanna jump 16 beats forward or 16 beats backwards, just set the amount of beats you want, and press a button, and you’re there!
It’s super handy feature to use and it’s available on all DJ softwares, and in this video, I’m gonna teach you how I use
with Rekordbox DJ, Serato and even Traktor.
Now, usually, when we download dj friendly songs, we get intros. The thing is, these intros sometimes vary. Sometimes they’re too long or even too short.
Now the first thing I do when I download a new song, is that I cue point it.
So I place a total of 3 cue points.
The thing is I start with the 3rd cue point first.
So I place the 3rd cue point at the section where the song really begins, and for this example, it should be right here.
Then I beatjump 16 beats backwards and place my 2nd cue point there,
then I finally jump 16 beats backwards again and place my 1st cue point there.
So by doing this, I am 100% certain that every 1st and 2nd cue point is 32 and 16 beats away from the start of the song.
This makes my mixing sharp and precise, because usually I mix towards the last 32 beats of a chorus. And In case of an emergency, I can also mix during the last 16 beats instead.
Also, you can use this technique to mix in the chorus of the next song within a mix, like how did in the demo a while ago. So just do the same thing, but this time, place cue point 3 at the chorus.
Now the second method works very similarly to the first, but this one is to be performed live.
So let’s say you’re mixing and you accidentally mix in the next song too early or even too late by about 16 beats.
To fix that, simply beat jump forwards or backwards 16 beats to get to the desired position you want.
And the third method takes this even further because we can also use beat jump to skip boring sections of a song. Like overly long build ups and breakdowns.
*so let’s say we want to skip this section over here, and that’s about 64 beats*, to do that we’ll have to beat jump 64 beats at the moment we hit this section over here.
So by doing this we can continue the action of the song, and keep the energy flowing.

Thank you so much! It's 1:30 am and I'm literally practicing for my very first gig of my life for tomorrow (today) and it's for my best friend's after party wedding. Super stress but should be fun. Thanks again, Carlo!
never stress just have fun,...wow i don't remember my first gig...wish i did
@@yescasalfonso8232 thank you :) well it's my bestfriend's wedding. My main challenge is to somehow stay sober until midnight haha!
@@sumoi.8738
Ok yo it's been a week already. Give us some feedback. Did you bust it out? I hope you did.
And yeah, welcome to the DJ World!
@@DJActionVasquez yes man it was awesome! Blasted it until 4 am! My best friend loved it. However i think i needed to be quicker with the song requests. I uses BPM surpreme for my djpool but at some point i kinda messed it with the transition when bunch of my friend stormed in and asked for the songs! Haha but it was epic. Can't wait to do more!
@@sumoi.8738
Nice! Glad you busted it out. You can't beat that live aspect either. I really like that feeling of being able to rock a crowd.
I wish you the best in your dj career.
Liked for the look of the video.
Also I want to thank you. I started my club Djing career at age of 16. Played gigs across India throught my high school and till getting a college degree. Djing affected my college degree and I have to quit playing. Then I joined a corporate Job. Now fast forward 5 years from getting degree and the job, I saw your videos, got inspired again, bought a DDJ 400 and started practicing again. I have no fixed intention of playing parties again etc. Rather, I may polish my skills further, the skil which I really wanted to master during my small DJing career and I will wait for anything that follows it.
You inspired me, you are my hero.
-Your Fan :)
Woooow! These are big words! My heart is filled! Thank you for having me as your inspiration! Keep on rocking!
I feel so grateful for you DJ Carlo. In my country, it costs a lot to learn about DJing. Your tutorials are very helpful for me. Thank you so much.
SO TRUE!! I use this feature a lot too....with my ddj-400 at home but also with the NXS2 setup!
It can also be a way to put a bit of performance creativity in the mix!!!
Like ur tutorials!!🔥🔥💪🏽💪🏽
This controller is perfect to begginers, hope later you can show us tips to mix only with ears, love your channel dude!
Keep it going and Flowing! Love all what you’re doing to help other Djs out there! Lighting and background looks awesome. Nice Key, Back and Fill lighting. Not too much head room and your in the center of the frame! Cinematography 101 !!
Also letting Djs know that whatever equipment they have will get them to what you need. Meaning if you have a controller that’s a little outdated it still can make musical magic!
Mad Respect Carlo!
Peace!
I use Beat Jump feature a lot but I didnt used it this way. Thank You Carlo Atendido for the trick... You really have helped me a lot. :)
:)
Lights and background setup look dope👍 Thanks for providing such valuable content👏

So simple but so genious at the same time. Thanks to you Carlo I get interested in djing, and all the tutorials you posting makes my transitions better and better. Thank you and keep up the good work😁
Never used best jump as I didn’t find a need for it, but your explanation makes sense so may have to rethink my cue points
Hi carlo this is dj GAGVAP, may be this feature will change my djing life too, anyone can miss there cue while a gig or practice, then this is the best feature to use, you are the best and you give very useful ideas and techniques,Thank you so much 😍
@@djcarlo You are awesome bro❤️
so much tricks to learn, even for pros. love your videos dude
First of all many thanks to Carlo. My question is, what is the real advantage in this technique rather than using hot cues? maybe I'm missing something, but since you have to set cue points first I'm wondering why do not use these...
Always the best tutorial bro. Yes those colours look cool 😎
Thanks for sharing man! It was great that you introduce traktor! I hope more tips and tutorials with this software in your next videos. saludos!!

Ive been watching your vids for a while - the new lighting looks good yes :) Very impressed at how fast you "fixed" up the mistimed mix in the demo at the start of the video - im enjoying all your videos now - thanks for your hard work :)
Its worth doing so - besides the more good feedback you get - the more motivation you have to do more of these videos :) Again - thank you :)
You know, I never used the beat jump function because I didn't know where it would land me on the track if I'm not a 100% thorough with the track. But now I'm a bit confident to use this feature. Thank you Mentor! Extremely helpful video again. Oh! And cool background and lighting.
@@djcarlo No worries man. All that effort you're taking for us cannot be missed.
100% the most underrated feature in DVS and the like, once this becomes second nature it makes mixing effortless.
Got the next tune playing a little later than you wanted? No worries, just skip forward.
Current tune playing isn't long enough? Skip back at the appropriate time to buy yourself some time.
Tune has non-linear phrasing? Who cares!? Start at the drop and work back from there.
Honestly it renders knowing your tunes pretty worthless once you get the hang of it. If you can go in blind and have a drop land wherever you want on the fly, you can mix anything.
100% agree with everything, except the last thing you said. It doesn't render it useless because you pretty much have to know the song inside out to beat jump to different places without accidentally cutting off vocals, landing smack dab in the middle of said vocals, or even throwing off that extra 8 beats at the end of a bridge or chorus! I've made those mistakes in the past hahaha, don't repeat what I did! :D
@@djcarlo Yeah that's a fair point, I may have got a little over enthusiastic about it in my drunken state last night haha.
That said it can save you from having to get overly familiar with the tunes provided you know that you aren't going to run into situations like you mentioned. Perhaps a better way to describe it is that it allows for a much more fluid approach to mixing. Rather than hanging around waiting for the ideal moment to cue up the next tune (or worrying that you've missed it), you can simply cue up and match whenever is convenient and adjust accordingly.
It does potentially open up the door to traversing different time signatures too if you want to get really experimental. Obviously the practical use for that is very limited but it can be a fun exercise to try imo.
I already subscribed to your channel, but your videos are a great inspiration
Superb!! Thank you dj carlo!
Nice Tip DJ Carlo! Thanks!
